Sung Kang, who is best known for playing the fan favorite role of Han in the Fast and Furious franchise, has made his feature directorial debut with the ’90s-set creature feature Shaky Shivers, which landed a North American distribution deal with Cinedigm. They teamed up with Fathom Events to bring the movie to theatres for one night last month, and now it has been announced (via our friends at Bloody Disgusting) that Shaky Shivers will be receiving a digital release on October 17th. Actor Sung Kang is most widely known for playing fan-favorite Han in the Fast & Furious franchise, among other roles outside of horror, including a voice role in Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon. That he chose gateway horror Shaky Shivers for his feature directorial debut might seem unconventional. However, after speaking with the filmmaker, the charming tale of friendship among zombies and cryptids quickly reveals itself as the perfect vehicle for his debut.
Shaky Shivers stars Brooke Markham (In the Dark) and VyVy Nguyen (The Sympathizer) as Lucy and Karen, best friends grappling with a potential werewolf curse. With snobby customers, zombies, cryptids, and more, the friends have their hands full this summer.
With Shaky Shivers releasing in theaters for one-night-only on September 21 from Fathom Events, Bloody Disgusting spoke with Kang about his first outing in the director’s seat; specifically, why the actor-turned-director chose this horror-comedy script.

Plot: Fearing a witch’s curse is going to make her turn into a werewolf, Lucy heads to an abandoned camp with her friend Karen to wait out the full moon. But lycanthropy may be the least of their problems.
Review: The horror comedy Shaky Shivers takes its title from a cold, sweet concoction created by ice cream shop worker Karen (VyVy Nguyen), but we never actually learn what ingredients she has put into this treat. The movie itself is quite a blend of sub-genres, featuring lycanthropy, zombies, a witch, cultists, a Trapper Keeper Necronomicon, a Bigfoot enthusiast… and maybe even an appearance by Bigfoot itself.
Karen works at the aforementioned ice cream shop with her pal Lucy (Brooke Markham), and when a witchy woodsy woman called Mama Nature (played by Erin Daniels of Rob Zombie’s House of 1000 Corpses) comes in after closing time, wielding an odd puppet and asking for food,...

Best known for playing the fan favorite role of Han in the Fast and Furious franchise, Sung Kang has now made his feature directorial debut with the ’90s-set creature feature Shaky Shivers, which is being presented to potential distributors at the American Film Market. Shot over the course of five weeks at a closed down girl scout camp back in 2020, Shaky Shivers tells the story of two ice cream shop employees stranded at an abandoned camp, where a book of magical spells puts them in contact with a number of classic movie creatures.
Brooke Markham (Friend Request) and VyVy Nguyen (Young Sheldon) star as the ice cream shop employees and are joined in the cast by Jimmy Bellinger (Blockers), Erin Daniels (House of 1000 Corpses), Skyler Day (Parenthood), and Herschel Sparber (Lucky Stiff).

Audiences who know Sung Kang from the Fast and the Furious films might not expect him to pivot to a low-budget horror-comedy for his directorial debut. But in the height of Covid in 2020, the actor, who plays Han in the Fast films, spent five weeks at a closed-down Girl Scout camp shooting Shaky Shivers, a ‘90s-set monster mash that is an ode to the types of ‘80s films he grew up loving.
“I didn’t want to do something really heavy,” Kang says. “I think a lot of people expected, because of my association to these big blockbuster action movies, that I would do some action film.”
Now Kang is offering the project at AFM this week.

Sung Kang ditches the fast and furious lifestyle for his directorial debut Shaky Shivers — a delightful gateway horror treat that recalls the Goosebumps television show or Are You Afraid of the Dark. Its Young Adult vibes bring two girls face to face with werewolf curses, zombification, and friendly ice cream parlor wholesomeness. Some might see the "gateway" description and wince, but that's not meant as a zinger — Shaky Shivers is filled with giggles and quirky horror introductions that make the genre accessible to all audiences. There's something Nickelodeon After Midnight about it all, as Kang turns a low-budget buddy comedy with teeth into a sweet tale about friendship, brainfreeze, and choosing our destinies over giving up to lesser fates.

The practice of short films making the jump to the big screen is nothing new (Deadpool and Rauri Robinson’s The Leviathan being the most recent examples), but when they’re as impressive as The Garden you can’t really fault it. A sci-fi re-imagining of John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost, the VFX heavy short, made for $30,000, has being picked up by Polly Johnson and Warner Bros. based Polymorphic Pictures with an eye to turn it into a new sci-fi franchise. Following a group of explorers searching for a new home after discovering Earth’s sun is dying, the proof of concept video also included a feature script by director E.B. Rhee and producer Aaron Strongoni, meaning the heavy lifting of fleshing out the core idea is already done. You can find the short below, and there’s no denying there’s a lot that can be done with the concept,...

The last few years has seen a number of proof-of-concept projects being picked up for production and it seems the trend continues and the latest project to meet that fate is The Garden.
Co-written by Aaron Strongoni and E.B. Rhee and directed by Rhee, the story here is a sci-fi retelling of John Milton's "Paradise Lost." What I can't figure out is how Milton's story fits into this one which, according to the description, "follows a group of explorers who set out into deep space in search of a new home for humanity after they learn that the sun is dying."
That all said, the project does sound interesting (if familiar) and Rhee has created a cool looking alien design and a number of impress [Continued ...]...

The hope is to start a new science fiction franchise, and this is all based on a proof-of-concept short directed by Rhee as well as a feature screenplay written by Rhee & Aaron Strongoni (watch it above). 2 more 'Dead' sequels rise
CANNES -- Anatoly Fradis' Los Angeles-based Aurora Entertainment Corp. is set to start back-to-back shooting from June 7 in Romania on the fourth and fifth sequels to the Return of the Living Dead series of films, with Ellory Elkayem attached to direct and Peter Coyote headlining. Both films have been fully financed by a $35 million equity fund that Fradis (Eight Legged Freaks) set up last year. The fund is based in America but backed by a group of private Eastern European and Russian investors. They set the scene for plans to make six or seven films a year in the $6 million-$10 million budget range through the fund, Fradis said. Titled Return of the Living Dead 4: Necropolis and Return of the Living Dead 5: Rave From the Grave, the films were written by William Butler and Aaron Strongoni and feature a relatively unknown cast drawn from TV. Special effects will be done by Optic Nerve Studios.
