Even though she's no stranger to Netflix, having starred in the streamer's original movies Outlaw King, Malevolent, and The Wonder, Academy Award-nominated actress Florence Pugh's biggest Netflix role is still to come. The talented star will lead the cast of Netflix's upcoming limited series East of Eden, based on the novel of the same name by John Steinbeck.

Pugh first became attached to star when word of the project was revealed by Deadline back in June 2022, but Netflix officially gave the limited series the green light in September 2024. The limited series starring and executive produced by Florence Pugh has begun production in New Zealand. Joining the cast are Tracy Letts, Martha Plimpton, Ciaran Hinds, Joseph Zada and Joe Anders, who will appear alongside Pugh and the previously cast Christopher Abbott, Mike Faist and Hoon Lee.

Netflix formally greenlit the seven-episode drama in September, having acquired the rights in a bidding war back in 2022. Zoe Kazan — the granddaughter of Elia Kazan, who directed a 1955 feature film based on the novel — and Jeb Stuart (Die Hard, Vikings: Valhalla) are co-showrunners, with Kazan adapting Steinbeck’s book.

The “East of Eden” limited series adaptation at Netflix is rounding out its cast.

Variety has learned that Tracy Letts, Martha Plimpton, Ciarán Hinds, Joseph Zada, and Joe Anders have all joined the series.

They will appear alongside previously announced cast members Florence Pugh, Christopher Abbott, Mike Faist, and Hoon Lee.

Letts will play Cyrus Trask, while Plimpton will play Faye, Hinds will play Samuel Hamilton, Zada will play Cal Trask, and Anders will play Aron Trask.

Based on the John Steinbeck novel of the same name, the series is said to “explore the multigenerational saga of the Trask family, focusing new attention on its indelible antihero, Cathy Ames (Pugh).”

Production on the seven-episode series is now underway in New Zealand. In addition to writing, Zoe Kazan serves as executive producer and co-showrunner. Her grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the original film adaptation starring James Dean. Jeb Stuart serves as co-showrunner and executive producer as well.

Netflix has rounded out the main cast of its limited series East Of Eden, starring and executive produced by Florence Pugh and written and executive produced by Zoe Kazdan.

While Florence Pugh is teaming up with a group of supervillain misfits for Marvel Studios’ upcoming closer to phase five, Thunderbolts*, she will also be gearing up for a Netflix drama that’s based on John Steinbeck’s literary classic, East of Eden. The Hollywood Reporter has unveiled that the streamer has given the go-ahead to a seven-episode limited series based on the 1952 novel. The book was previously adapted for a 1955 movie, which was directed by Elia Kazan and featured the iconic James Dean in his first lead role.

Elia Kazan’s granddaughter, Zoe Kazan, is set to adapt the novel into an episodic show and will serve as co-showrunner along with Jeb Stuart, known for projects like Die Hard and Vikings: Valhalla. Pugh will be joined by Christopher Abbott, as well as Mike Faist, who is playing the role Dean had in the film adaptation, and Hoon Lee will also starring.

More than two years after Netflix’s take on East of Eden first went into development, the streamer has officially ordered a limited-series adaptation of John Steinbeck’s classic novel.

The streamer has formally greenlit East of Eden, a seven-episode limited series based on John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel. The book was previously adapted for a 1955 movie directed by Elia Kazan that was notable as James Dean’s first lead role.

Zoe Kazan, Elia Kazan’s granddaughter, is adapting the novel and will serve as co-showrunner with Jeb Stuart (Die Hard, Vikings: Valhalla). Netflix is bringing Vikings: Valhalla to a close with its upcoming third season.

IGN first reported the shocking news.

"I am so grateful to have had three seasons to tell the stories of Leif, Harald and Freydis," creator Jeb Stuart said in a statement to IGN.

"I knew from the beginning that I wanted to show the evolution of how three of the most famous Vikings became the icons we know today and we have done just that."

Vikings: Valhalla is gearing up for one final adventure.

The Netflix series serves as sequel to the popular historical drama Vikings, which ran for six seasons from 2013 to 2020 on the History Channel and Prime Video. Valhalla stars Sam Corlett, Frida Gustavsson, Leo Suter, and many more.

On Friday (October 6), Netflix announced that Vikings: Valhalla will end with its third season. The news comes nine months after the show’s second season premiered.

Netflix additionally released a set of first-look images from the upcoming season, and it looks like Harald Sigurdsson (Suter), Leif Eriksson (Corlett), and Freydís Eiríksdóttir (Gustavsson) will engage in some thrilling endeavors in their final chapter.

The saga of Leif Eriksson (Sam Corlett), Freydis Eriksdotter (Frida Gustavsson), and Harald (Leo Suter) is coming to an end. As first reported by IGN, Vikings: Valhalla will conclude next year with season 3.

“I am so grateful to have had three seasons to tell the stories of Leif, Harald and Freydis,” said series creator Jeb Stuart. “I knew from the beginning that I wanted to show the evolution of how three of the most famous Vikings became the icons we know today and we have done just that.”

The voyages of Leif, Harald, and Freydis will come to a close with Season 3 at Netflix, Variety has confirmed.

“I am so grateful to have had three seasons to tell the stories of Leif, Harald and Freydis. I knew from the beginning that I wanted to show the evolution of how three of the most famous Vikings became the icons we know today and we have done just that,” said co-creator and executive producer, Jeb Stuart, in a statement. “I hope when the audience gets to see the new season, they’ll be excited by all the new heights that we’ve taken these heroes. The Vikings journey on Netflix is coming to an end.

The third season of Vikings: Valhalla, which is set to air in 2024, will be its last.

The show, which was created by Jeb Stuart, is a sequel to the Michael Hirst-created Vikings. After its first season launched in February 2022, it was handed a two season renewal.

The drama begins in the early 11th century and chronicles the legendary adventures of some of the most famous Vikings who ever lived – Leif Eriksson, played by Sam Corlett, Freydis Eriksdotter (Frida Gustavsson), Harald Hardrada (Leo Suter), and the Norman King William the Conqueror. These men and women will blaze a path as they fight for survival in the ever-changing and evolving world.

The premise was a grabber: Dr. Richard Kimble (David Janssen) has been arrested and convicted for the murder of his wife, a crime he didn't commit. Season 2 of Vikings: Valhalla ended with lots of drama: Freydis and her Jomsvikings managed to fight off an invasion by Olaf’s forces, while Harald and Lief finally reached the outskirts of Constantinople, after a perilous journey that involved going over a literal waterfall. Elena, the young noblewoman they’ve been traveling with turns out to be the future empress of Constantinople, and Harald’s attraction to her may now mean provoking an international incident. Poor Lief has had to bury yet another woman he cares for, though the navigation lessons Mariam taught him—along with her fortune—will certainly change him and his destiny. And in England, Earl Godwin has conned his way into a royal marriage, as Queen Emma fumes about being so capably deceived by her husband’s top advisor.

What could possibly be next for all our Valhalla favorites?...

The second season of Vikings: Valhalla serves a lot of masters, with a sprawling plot that includes a dozen major characters, half that many countries, huge action set pieces, and rich interpersonal dynamics. From Harald’s determination to prove that the throne of Norway is his destiny to Lief’s desperate attempts to find out where his true beliefs (religious and otherwise) lie, season 2 is full of nuanced and emotional character moments.

But no one’s journey is as satisfying to watch unfold this season as that of Freydis Eriksdotter. In the series’ first season, we watched her learn to fight for herself, ultimately becoming a shield-maiden of Kattegat. In Valhalla season 2, we get to see her come into her own in almost every other conceivable way: spiritually, as the Keeper of the Faith; politically, as a leader in the Viking stronghold of Jomsborg; and emotionally,...
