A social media ban for children under 16 passed the Australian Parliament on Friday in a world-first law.

The law will make platforms including TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit, X and Instagram liable for fines of up to $33 million (A$50 million) for systemic failures to prevent children younger than 16 from holding accounts.

The Senate passed the bill on Thursday 34 votes to 19. The House of Representatives on Wednesday overwhelmingly approved the legislation by 102 votes to 13.

The House on Friday endorsed opposition amendments made in the Senate, making the bill law.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the law supported parents concerned by online harms to their children.

“Platforms now have a social responsibility to ensure the safety of our kids is a priority for them,” Albanese told reporters.

The platforms have one year to work out how they could implement the ban before penalties are enforced.

Meta Platforms, which owns Facebook and Instagram, said the legislation had been “rushed.

Sixteen years after the release of Grindhouse, director Eli Roth is finally about to head into production on a feature expansion of his faux trailer Thanksgiving – and Deadline reports that the slasher movie has just secured worldwide theatrical distribution from TriStar Pictures! According to Deadline, studios were lining up to get the chance to release Thanksgiving. “TriStar president Nicole Brown is all about filmmaker-driven projects, and once Roth announced this was his next film, she set out to make sure TriStar landed the pic and aggressively pursued the rights.“

TriStar Pictures has acquired Spyglass Media Group‘s “Thanksgiving,” a full-length slasher film inspired by the fake trailer from Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s double feature “Grindhouse,” according to an insider with knowledge of the project.

Roth is attached to direct the horror thriller film. “Thanksgiving” is co-written by Roth and Jeff Rendell, with Roger Birnbaum, Roth and Rendell producing.

Chatter has existed about turning the jokey trailer into an actual movie, with Roth having written a screenplay over a dozen years ago. Fantasy became fact when Spyglass stepped in late last year to finance the picture, with shooting to begin in Toronto next month.

Exclusive: TriStar Pictures has landed Spyglass Media Group ‘s Thanksgiving, a full-length slasher film inspired by the fictitious trailer directed by Eli Roth featured in the cult 2007 film Grindhouse. James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” leads the feature competition at the 21st Annual Ves Awards.

The film earned a total of 14 Ves Awards nominations, setting a new record for record nominations for a feature film. The original “Avatar” was the previous record holder when it received 11 nominations at the 8th Annual Ves Awards held in 2010.

“Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio” received six nominations in the animation category making it the top animated contender.

Ves members selected nominees in 25 categories at 27 in-person and virtual nomination events conducted worldwide. The winners will be announced on Feb. 15 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.

Easily my favorite movie reference in "Scream" is the line, "What's that werewolf movie with E.T.'s mom in it?" That would be Joe Dante's gloriously seedy "The Howling," one of three lycanthrope flicks that hit theaters in 1981. Unabashedly sticking to its B-movie roots, the film outperformed Albert Finney vs. Real Wolves in "Wolfen," but got left a little in the dust by "An American Werewolf in London." Perhaps that was no surprise because John Landis was on a hot streak after "Animal House" and "The Blues Brothers," and his first foray into horror was slicker, more expensive, and, despite its fair share of shocks, generally more respectable than Dante's low-budget shocker.

Hulu’s “Hellraiser” reimagines Clive Barker’s iconic 1987 horror film for modern audiences, thanks to “The Night House” director David Bruckner. The film premieres October 7 as part of the streamer’s annual Huluween offerings.

Per the official description, a young woman (Odessa A’zion) struggling with addiction and compulsive behavior comes into possession of an ancient puzzle box, unaware that its purpose is to summon the Cenobites, a group of sadistic supernatural beings from another dimension. Pinhead (Jamie Clayton) leads the Cenobites into the human realm.

We’re just over two weeks away from the October 7th Hulu release of The Ritual and The Night House director David Bruckner’s reboot of the horror classic Hellraiser, and today a trailer for the film has arrived online! You can watch it in the embed above. Along with the trailer, Hulu has also unveiled a poster for the new Hellraiser and a handful of new images from the film, and you can see those at the bottom of this article.

For several years, the Halloween and Hellraiser franchises were housed at the same studio. That’s no longer the case, so it’s a cool coincidence that we’re getting new additions to both of those franchises this October. A Hellraiser reboot is scheduled to arrive first, set to be released through the Hulu streaming service on October 7th. The new Halloween sequel, Halloween Ends, will follow a week later, reaching both theatres and the Peacock streaming service on October 14th. In anticipation of these release dates, USA Today has unveiled new images from each film: one giving another look at Pinhead, who is played by Jamie Clayton in the Hellraiser reboot, and the other offering a glimpse at the Michael Myers vs. Laurie Strode showdown we’ll be witnessing in Halloween Ends. Both images can be seen at the bottom of this article.

The Ritual and The Night House...

The teaser, embedded above, for the Hellraiser reboot gave us a glimpse of Jamie Clayton (Sense8) as Pinhead, and yesterday we got the first actual picture of Clayton’s Pinhead. Fans have been sharing their opinions on this take on the character… but what does the original Pinhead, Doug Bradley, think about Clayton stepping into the role that made him a genre icon? Our friends at Bloody Disgusting shared what Bradley had to say about the casting while he was making an appearance at the Silver Scream Con in Massachusetts:

It seemed like [a female Pinhead] was coming. It’s an interesting piece of casting. I don’t know Jamie. Of course, they’ve taken even a little bit of a wrinkle in that, because Jamie is transgender. I’m not familiar with her recent work, but there was a science fiction series on Netflix several years ago called Sense8, which I was quite a fan of.

Hulu has announced that its reimagining of the 1987 horror classic Hellraiser will debut exclusively on the streamer in the U.S., as part of its annual “Huluween” celebration of fright-filled content, on October 7.

The original film, which introduced horror fans to the iconic monster known as Pinhead, watches as a woman comes upon the newly resurrected, partially formed body of her brother-in-law. She then starts killing for him to revitalize his body, so that he can escape the demonic beings that have been pursuing him after he himself made his way out of their sadistic underworld. Clive Barker directed the pic from his own script, which was itself based on his 1986 novella The Hellbound Heart, with Clare Higgins, Ashley Laurence, Andrew Robinson, Sean Chapman, Robert Hines, Doug Bradley, Nicholas Vince, Simon Bamford, Grace Kirby and Oliver Smith starring.

Last week, The Ritual and The Night House director David Bruckner’s Hellraiser reboot earned its R rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board. Now Hulu has released a short video that gives us our first (albeit somewhat obscured) look at Jamie Clayton (Sense8) as Pinhead and reveals that the new Hellraiser will be available to watch through the streaming service as of October 7th. Exclusive: It’s been a while since we’ve had a raunchy female feature comedy– arguably since 2017’s Girls Trip, however, here comes D-Day from Spyglass Media Group with Schitt’s Creek‘s Emily Hampshire attached to star.

The pic, written by One Day at a Time scribes Becky Mann, Audra Sielaff and Andy Roth follows newly divorced and sexually inexperienced Kate, as she’s encouraged by her friends to get back out there. Of course Kate has certain standards so she’s not going to settle for just anyone but she’s determined to make her ex’s wedding day her D-Day.

Betsy Thomas, the creator of TBS’ My Boys, will be making her feature directorial debut here.

Thomas tells Deadline, “I am so thrilled to work with the immensely talented Emily Hampshire to bring this hilariously randy script to life.”

D-Day is produced by Level 1 Entertainment’s Bill Todman Jr and Edward Milstein (Grandma’s Boy). Spyglass’ Chairman and CEO, Gary Barber, and Peter Oillataguerre, President of Production, are executive producing with Oillataguerre and Chris Stone, VP of Production & Development, overseeing the project on behalf of Spyglass. Hampshire will release her first graphic novel Amelia Aierwood: Basic Witch in partnership with Z2 Comics this October and is set to co-write, executive produce and star as the title character in the Norman Lear reboot of Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.

The project reunites Barbusca and the Chernin brothers, who worked together on the Fox TV comedy “The Mick.”

“Incoming” follows four incoming freshmen as they navigate the terrors of adolescence at their first-ever high school party. The cast also includes “The Black Phone” actor Mason Thames, Bobby Cannavale and fellow “Mick” alum Kaitlin Olson.

The Chernin brothers, also known for the long-running show “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” are writing and directing in their feature filmmaking debut. Artists Road and Spyglass Media Group are co-financing “Incoming,” which is currently in production in Los Angeles.

Hey everyone! While Valentine’s Day is almost over, we’re sure you’ll still have a lot of love for this week’s horror and science fiction home media releases. One of this writer's favorite films of all time, Joe Dante’s The Howling, is getting the 4K treatment from Scream Factory in a brand new release, and if you’re into time-bending sci-fi/action thrillers, you’ll definitely want to pick up the 4K release of Rian Johnson’s Looper as well.

If you haven’t had a chance to check out James Wan’s Malignant yet, Warner Bros. is releasing it on both Blu-ray and DVD, and A24 is finally bringing Saint Maud home this Tuesday, too. If you’re one of the many moviegoers who are unfamiliar with the Jacques Lacerte thriller Love Me Deadly, you’re not alone. A product of early 1970s low-budget motion picture production, this film is the sole title directed by Mr. Lacerte who passed away in 1988. Lensed in 1971 and released in San Francisco right around the same time as Gerard Damiano’s wildly popular and controversial couples-flick Deep Throat in June 1972 just before the Watergate burglary, the film played in roughly ten markets, including rained-out drive-ins, before it nearly disappeared from view. However, there are subsequent movie posters for the film that have the audacity to mention William Friedkin’s The Exorcist (1973) and give the impression that spiritual possession is somehow to blame for the unsavory goings-on. It’s not.

Taboo Tuesday is an exploration of some of the most outré sides of horror cinema.

In the previous entry, we speculated that one of horror’s most reviled offshoots may be poised to enter the mainstream, perhaps to the detriment of the genre’s role as an irritant to mainstream moral hypocrisy. The Walking Dead may well have paved the way for mass audiences to embrace the cannibal film, but it can’t possibly prepare one for the queasy thrill of necrophilia on film.

Jörg Buttgereit’s Nekromantic, perhaps the best-known and most widely-seen example of this micro-genre (there’s even a sequel), recently received the Blu-ray treatment after years out of print on DVD. Chicago – When I was a teenager discovering horror films for the first time, I naturally gorged on ’80s genre classics and was drawn to the trendy characters like Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, and Leatherface. Films like Tobe Hooper’s “Lifeforce” and Joe Dante’s “The Howling” didn’t have what I was looking for. I wrote them off as dumb kids often do. 1981 was a pretty exciting year for fans of werewolf cinema. Not only did we get John Landis' masterful An American Werewolf in London and a decent adaptation of Whitley Streiber's novel Wolfen, but there was also Joe Dante's The Howling, which is a clever little werewolf flick with a sense of humor that still holds up pretty darn well after all these years. No, the special effects aren't quite as amazing as those found in the John Landis movie, and some of the film's social commentary is stuck firmly in the late 1970s, but given how seldom we get new werewolf flicks these days, there's always something to be said for an old one that can still deliver the goods.

I can always count on Scream Factory to present me with opportunities to revisit the cult classic horror films of the 1980s. The Howling gets an upgrade, marking the first time the movie has ever been available on Blu-ray. Many werewolf fans are wondering if the film feels aged in a high-definition format. I'm happy to report It's not without its faults, but holds up quite well.

After news anchor Karen White (Dee Wallace) is attacked by a mysterious stranger (Robert Picardo), she starts having bizarre dreams and night terrors about the incident. Karen's doctor (Patrick Macnee) convinces her that she and husband Bill (Christopher Stone) should go through his treatment at "The Colony." Strange things start to happen as soon as they arrive. Could Karen be cracking up or is there something sinister going on in the secluded resort?

Like most movies from the 1970s and the 1980s, The Howling is a slow-burner.

Gabrielle Stone, daughter of the legendary actress and scream queen Dee Wallace, is busting out on her own in a new film entitled Speak No Evil. The beautiful young rising star took some time to talk with Dread Central about the role and her future endeavors.

Stone spoke on her background and growing up as the daughter of a very busy actress. "I grew up in the business," Stone said. "My mom is Dee Wallace, who they call a legendary scream queen. She was the mom in E.T. and Cujo, and she was in The Howling. And my father, Christopher Stone, was also an actor, so I kind of grew up in the business on set with them. I always knew I wanted to be a part of the business, but when I did my first short film is when I realized I didn't ever want to do anything else again.

One of the many Scream Factory titles scheduled to be released this year is Joe Dante’s The Howling. The movie will be released as a bonus feature-packed Blu-ray/DVD collector’s edition, and we have the first look at the cover art.

A specific release date has not been announced, but Scream Factory expects The Howling to be available this summer. We should have release information, including a list of bonus features, next month.

For those that haven’t seen the werewolf classic, it was released in 1981 and stars Dee Wallace, Patrick Macnee, Christopher Stone, and Kevin McCarthy. The movie was directed by Joe Dante before he’d go on to make Gremlins.

Dee Wallace is something of an icon in the horror genre and the film industry. She’s been doing films for over 40 years and has amassed an incredible resume of film and Television appearances. Most people will probably know Dee from her role as Elliot’s mother in the Steven Spielberg blockbuster, E. T. the Extra-Terrestrial, but horror fans know her from her many roles in genre films including The Hills Have Eyes, The Stepford Wives, The Howling, Cujo, Popcorn, Alligator 2: The Mutation, Temptress, The Frighteners, Black Circle Boys, Boo, Rob Zombie’s Halloween, The House of the Devil, Exit Humanity, and the upcoming Rob Zombie flick, The Lords of Salem.

The Howling Favorite werewolf movie? A sub-genre in the horror field that doesn't get enough movies if you ask me! When we do get something, it can be absolutely amazing and fully of creativity like The Company of Wolves. However, that didn't make my top pick. It can be something overrated like the classic An American Werewolf in London which was jerky, uneven and all over the place. Or it's something that's competently made, but just completely bland and by the numbers like Bad Moon. Or even worse, we get stuck with films like Wolves on Wall Street which forget to indulge viewers in some werewolf action to begin with! So what film was my top pick for werewolf film?
