“All the films in this book share an air of disreputability… I have tried to avoid using the word art about the movies in this book, not just because I didn’t want to inflate my claims for them, but because the word is used far too often to shut down discussion rather than open it up. If something has been acclaimed as art, it’s not just beyond criticism but often seen as above the mere mortals for whom its presumably been made. It’s a sealed artifact that offers no way in. It is as much a lie to claim we can be moved only by what has been given the imprimatur of art as it would be to deny that there are, in these scruffy movies, the very things we expect from art: avenues into human emotion and psychology, or into the character and texture of the time the films were made,...

Did ya miss me? Regardless, I’m back, baby!
Holidays
• Release Date: In Theaters Now
• Written By: Anthony Scott Burns, Kevin Kolsch, Nicholas McCarthy, Gary Shore, Kevin Smith, Sarah Adina Smith, Scott Stewart, Dennis Widmyer
• Directed By: Anthony Scott Burns, Kevin Kolsch, Nicholas McCarthy, Adam Egypt Mortimer, Gary Shore, Kevin Smith, Sarah Adina Smith, Scott Stewart, Dennis Widmyer
• Starring: Seth Green and like 100 other people
What’s this? A new horror anthology centered around a myriad of holidays and helmed by some cats I really dig (I mean, c’mon; look at that list of die-rectors up there)? You know, normally I’d make some ridiculous pun alluding to the quality or lack thereof of whatever film was at hand, and this time I think I’ll do that, too. Let’s see if this one is going to be more treats than tricks, or just an overstuffed and overcooked turkey!

It’s no secret whatsoever that I’m a pretty big Kevin Smith fan, which is something I’ve said more than once on this site. Perhaps to some degree that’s why I’m so delighted by his recent foray into horror/genre work, but I’d also make the argument that Smith is exercising new muscles of late, and that’s indisputably exciting. Today, the anthology horror project Holidays is transitioning from its run at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival this month to a limited theatrical release, with Smith helming one of the segments. It’s one of the better ones in the flick too, so it’s a great excuse for me to pay tribute to a favorite in Smith once again. The movie is, as previously mentioned, an anthology horror tale, with different filmmakers taking different holidays and giving them a scary or just twisted spin. For example,...

Some of the biggest days on the calendar are viewed through a dark lens in the new horror anthology Holidays. Featuring a plethora of intriguing characters, one of the film’s standouts is Andrew Bowen’s performance as Reggie: an unconventional serial killer looking for his next victim on New Year’s Eve. Following Holidays’ world premiere at Tribeca Film Festival (and VOD debut) and ahead of its April 22nd theatrical release, we caught up with Bowen for our latest Q&A feature.
Andrew, thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, and congratulations on your excellent work in Holidays. What attracted you to this film and the role of Reggie in the “New Year’s Eve” segment?
Andrew Bowen: Thank you so much! It was such a cool project to work on. I got involved after my friend and producer Gabriella Lugo (who produced [the] “Christmas...

Horror anthologies are here to stay, with the V/H/S and ABCs of Death series, and Michael Dougherty’s more cohesive Trick ‘r Treat offering fans fun-size bits of terror. Now comes Holidays, a twisted little tribute to all our beloved religious, secular, and federal celebrations.
The vignettes, which are presented in order of the calendar year, open with Valentine’s Day, a story about a high school outcast, her alpha bitch tormentor, and a swim coach with a bad heart. The work from Starry Eyes duo Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer screams retro with its synth-y soundtrack and teen-centric drama, doing its very best to recall early Brian De Palma. (If the connection to Carrie wasn’t evident enough, there’s a girl wearing a red baseball cap à la Pj Soles to remind you.)

Another Sunday and another installment of VOD Vault, taking a look at some of this weeks on-demand releases that have hit various VOD platforms here in the UK. This week we have a very seasonal edition, featuring two films that take a horrific look at the holidays…
Krampus
Stars: Adam Scott, Toni Collette, David Koechner, Allison Tolman, Conchata Ferrell, Emjay Anthony, Stefania Lavie Owen, Krista Stadler | Directed by Michael Dougherty
Krampus has seemingly become the de jour villain in the horror genre recently. We’ve already had two movies featuring the evil anti-Santa, Krampus: The Christmas Devil and Krampus: The Reckoning; and now comes a third. Although unlike its seasonal brethren, this Krampus at least made it into cinemas – and so it should have. This is the latest film from director Michael Dougherty, who exploded onto the UK horror scene a few years back when his Halloween anthology Trick ‘r’ Treat was screened at Frightfest.

For centuries, annual holidays have been widely celebrated as a time to put aside one’s worries and responsibilities in order to come together with loved ones and enjoy each other’s company. Holidays are magical, not only because they represent a time of love and harmony, but also because many of them are commemorated on a global scale, making them not only a positive junction, but a universal one that can be shared by nearly all of humankind.
Although we can all look back on our happy moments as a collective people, we can also all relate to the sense of dread that often goes hand-in-hand with an approaching festivity. Holidays like Valentine’s Day can be ridiculously expensive, Christmastime can mean grueling hosting duties for many, as well as fights with family. Mother’s Day and Father’s Day can bring emotional baggage with it if a person has a lost parent,...

Growing up, I was a sucker for gimmicks. Blame my Mom. Every time a new M&M flavor (did you know they make Coconut and Cherry?) or Oreo remix hit the shelves, our house was the first on the block to sample it. I like to think it’s this upbringing that now influences my taste in horror films, like my adoration of holiday themes (Krampus! Gremlins!) and anthology collections. Or how about an entire horror anthology themed around major holidays, aptly titled – you guessed it – Holidays! It was going to take an act of Satan to keep me away from this one…
Let me start by confirming that yes, Holidays works. It’s an admitted mixed-bag of highs and lows (more highs), but that’s to be expected with eight *very* different segments. Some will love Kevin Smith’s Halloween whorishness, while others will start with their typical anti-Smith...

There’s a fun looking horror anthology film coming out soon called Holidays. The movie is described as a “uniquely dark” film that puts an “original spin on some of the most iconic and beloved holidays of all time. The film challenges our folklore, traditions and assumptions, making Holidays a celebration of the horror on those same special days’ year after year.”

Following a screening at the SXSW film festival, a new trailer is out for the horror tale "Hush", a kind of modern homage to 1967's "Wait Until Dark" but swapping out blindness for deafness and making it more of a straight horror tale.
Kate Siegel plays a deaf recluse living her life in an isolated house. She begins to receive ominous text messages and realises a man in a terrifying white mask has been watching her. So begins a terrifying ordeal where she must fight for her very survival against an intruder who has a sensory advantage over her.
That's not the only festival film scoring a preview today. Vertical Entertainment and Xyz Films have landed global distribution rights to horror anthology "Holidays" which premieres April 14th at the Tribeca Film Festival. It will hit VOD the day after followed by a theatrical release on April 22nd.

While Tiff is more inclusive to programming them, Sundance is not one to shy away from anthology horror films of the V/H/S type, so perhaps they’ll be looking to get into the holiday spirit with horror comedy vignette package aptly called Holidays. Among the group of filmmakers contributing to the project Adam Egypt Mortimer (Some Kind of Hate), Dennis Widmyer (Starry Eyes), Anthony Scott Burns (Manifold), Matt Johnson (The Dirties), Kevin Kolsch (Starry Eyes), Nicholas McCarthy (The Pact), Gary Shore (Dracula Untold), Kevin Smith, Sarah Adina Smith (The Midnight Swim) and Scott Stewart (Priest) we do find former Sundance attendees. I do not need to tell you that horror anthologies are popular again. We have had any number over the past few years, some good and some dire, but all relying on often interconnected short stories to tell an overarching history of terror. The nice thing about anthology films is that you can get a lot of stars and directors in to work on them, producing a unique vision from a multitude of styles and approaches to the genre. The latest horror anthology will be Holidays, from Xyz Films, and it has secured a bevy of directors to contribute.
Holidays takes a step away from the usual Halloween themed films and expands it to encompass more holidays, including Easter, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and Mother’s Day as candidates for horrific murder and mayhem. The participating directors now include the likes of Kevin Smith, Gary Shore (Dracula Untold), Scott Stewart (Legion,...

Thanks to Trick 'r Treat, we've seen a surge of horror anthology films, and we have a new one coming our way. It's called Holidays, and as you might expect from the title, each segment of the film will be based on holidays such as Christmas, Easter, Valentine’s Day, Halloween, and Mother’s Day. What better way to pay tribute to the holidays than with all kinds of crazy bloody awesomeness. We even have a poster for the movie.
There are several directors attached to the project, and they include Kevin Smith (Clerks), Gary Shore (Dracula Untold), Scott Stewart (Legion, Priest), Matt Johnson (The Dirties), Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch (Starry Eyes), Nicholas McCarthy (At The Devil’s Door), Sarah Smith (The Midnight Swim) and Anthony Scott Burns.
The news comes from Deadline, who got the following statement from financier and producer John Hegeman:

We already know that Kevin Smith is working on a Christmas horror anthology called Anti-Claus, but it looks like that's not the only holiday horror anthology he'll be part of now. Deadline reports that Xyz Films is working with a new genre label called Distant Corners Entertainment to produce Holidays, a set of subversive tales fashioned around globally recognized celebrations including but not limited to Christmas, Easter, Halloween and Mother’s Day. And much like horror anthologies such as V/H/S or ABCs of Death, the segments will be directed by various filmmakers. And part of the filmmaker line-up has been revealed. Here's a teaser poster for the film's sale at the European Film Market this week: In addition to Kevin Smith being on board to direct an unspecified holiday horror short, other directors currently include Gary Shore (Dracula Untold), Matt Johnson (The Dirties), Scott Stewart (Dark Skies), Nick McCarthy...

After giving us a different take on the origins of everybody's favorite blood sucker in Dracula Untold, Irish director Gary Shore has joined indie and genre directors Kevin Smith, Scott Stewart (Dark Skies), and Nick McCarthy (The Pact), amongst others, for horror anthology Holidays. A collection of subversive tales built around globally recognised celebrations such as Christmas, Halloween, Mother's Day, and Easter, each director will handle a different vignette, with a cast that is expected to feature well known in the cast. Horror anthology's have really experienced a surge in popularity as of late, and with the current crop of creative minds attached (Shore, Smith, Stewart and McCarthy have all proven to be pretty adept at their chosen genres), Holidays should prove to be a fun little collection of horror tales.

Shades of Mr. Gray: The Vicious Bros.’ Unsatisfying Close Encounter
Following the unanticipated success of their 2011 film debut, Grave Encounters (which feels very much like the derivative, found footage version of a variety of other abandoned mental hospital narratives, including Brad Anderson’s Session 9, but hey, someone managed to squeeze out Grave Encounters 2 for good measure), the Vicious Bros. are back with a sophomore effort, Extraterrestrial. Can you guess what it’s about? Reportedly based on a tale they drafted back in their college days, the film bears the earmarks of pedantic indistinctness, a generic thrust of recycled, disambiguated alien abduction narratives that’s not only hopelessly shallow but utterly routine.

Syfy continues to bolster its original programming with the renewal of both Dominion and Defiance. The two drama series will return with 13 episodes each – joining the recently commissioned Hunters, created by Gale Anne Hurd, and the highly anticipated television adaptation of Arthur C Clarke’s Childhood’s End.
Dominion is categorised as a ‘Us apocalyptic supernatural action’ series, and was created by Vaun Wilmott (Sons Of Anarchy) as a loose adaptation of the 2010 film Legion, written by Peter Schink and Scott Stewart. Starring Christopher Egan (Letters To Juliet), Tom Wisdom (Romeo And Juliet), Roxanne McKee (Game Of Thrones) and Anthony Stewart Head (Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters), the show is set in a time when God has vanished, and Archangel Gabriel is waging war on mankind. Archangel Michael allies himself with man, against Gabriel, and lives among humans in a fortified city, awaiting the arrival of a prophesied saviour. On...

Rob checks out Dominion, Syfy’s televisual follow-up to the supernatural cinematic flop Legion…
Review
This review contains spoilers.
1.1 Pilot
Backflips! Assassinations! Lens flare! The pilot episode of Dominion, the televisual follow-up to the much-maligned 2010 supernatural action film Legion, tries hard to encourage audiences into forgetting the flaws of its big-screen predecessor though occasional dollops of action and suspense. But does it work?
Well, at times. Dominion kicks off with a hugely promising double-whammy – an animated sequence retelling the events of Legion through snazzy stylized stained-glass windows, followed by a tense opening scene which sees our lead character Alex (played incredibly straight by Christopher Egan) stumbling upon a rogue pack of evil angels and hurriedly trying to escape.
This results in a pacey action sequence which combines our first glimpse of angels in flight with a speedy escape car, a big gate that won’t open and a trigger-happy gun turret into some well-executed,...

The Syfy Channel’s “Dominion,” the spin-off TV series based on the 2010 movie “Legion” by Scott Stewart, debuts tonight on the cable network. “Dominion,” we’re told, will follow “the perilous journey of a rebellious young soldier who discovers he’s the unlikely savior of humanity.” That plot jives with what happened at the end of “Legion,” though I’m not sure what the whole guys running Las Vegas as some kind of kingdom has to do with it. I was really hoping for more of a down-and-dirty, gritty “Terminator”-esque show, but it looks way too glitzy and, I don’t know, less apocalyptic than I had expected. Anyways, I’ll still give it a shot, mostly because — for all its faults, and there were many — I still ended up liking “Legion.” That, and it’s summer and besides the 5000 reality TV shows out there on the network wasteland,...

Dominion isn't your average supernatural TV drama. Based on characters from the 2010 film Legion, the series is set in a post-apocalyptic future, 25 years after archangel Gabriel and his winged army began an epic war against mankind. The Syfy show premieres on Thursday, June 19th, but in the meantime, curious viewers can whet their appetite with this exclusive teaser clip from the pilot episode, which features young soldier Alex Lannen (Christopher Egan, Kings) engaged in a thrilling showdown with a bloodthirsty angel.

With "Dominion" premiering June 19th, Syfy recently hosted a conference call with star Chris Egan and exec producer/creator Vaun Wilmott, and we have the highlights for you here.
Settle in a bit because it's a long, wide-ranging discussion that touches upon the mythology of the TV show vs. the movie (2010's Legion) and how things have changed - Wilmott promises for the better - in this adaptation. He also describes the caste system in place in Vega society, what other worlds and supernatural beings we might see, and what the plan is for future seasons.
Egan elaborates on his character (soldier Alex Lannon) and his relationships with both the Archangel Michael and the upper class Claire Riesen. Of course the great Anthony Head's name comes up as well as how much like the angels we know from religion these guys really are.
But that's just the tip of the iceberg.

I didn’t mind 2010′s Legion, Scott Stewart’s supernatural action fantasy about the Archangel Michael (Paul Bettany) protecting a group of diner patrons during an apocalypse in which angels are sent by God to wipe out mankind. It was pretty much the definition of mediocre, complete with a few decent performances, strong visual effects and laughable dialogue. Still, there was a certain type of mindless fun to be had with the movie, particularly with the R-rating allowing for all kinds of gruesome bloodshed. That said, I certainly wasn’t chomping at the bit for a follow-up.
Regardless, we’re getting one in the form of Syfy’s upcoming series Dominion, set 25 years after the events of Legion. The series follows a rebellious soldier (Christopher Egan) who discovers he may be humankind’s only chance of survival in the war against bloodthirsty angels. Michael (played by Tom Wisdom in this...

A fresh new poster and trailer have arrived for Syfy's angel-tastic new series, Dominion...

As we've chewed over before, 2010's Legion, starring Paul Bettany as a rebel angel who arrives on Earth to protect mankind from a God who'd lost faith in his creation, was a little bit pants. That's no guarantee though that Dominion, the tie-in Syfy series starting this June, will necessarily follow suit.
Dominion takes place twenty-five years after the events of director Scott Stewart's film, in the aftermath of "a catastrophic war between angels and mankind". It stars Alan Dale and Anthony Head (hooray for both), Tom Wisdom, Christopher Egan and Roxanne McKee, and promises celestial battles and human rivalries set against the backdrop of a post-apocalyptic Earth.
