Few horror sub-genres are as divisive as exorcism movies. For some, they are silly to the point of high camp, outrageous stories about invisible creatures that can take control of normal people and make them do outrageous things. For others, exorcism movies reveal a hidden realm of evil that has a very real impact on our world.

That tension allows a wide variety of approaches within the sub-genre, despite the dominance of one monumental film from the 70s. Exorcism movies can be ridiculous crowd-pleasers, stately dramas, or lowbrow comedies. Whether it’s because of the power of Christ or a really good script, you should feel compelled to watch these great exorcism movies.

The Exorcist (1973)

Of course, it starts with The Exorcist, directed by the late, great William Friedkin. Friedkin wasn’t writer William Peter Blatty’s first choice to direct the movie, which first went to Francis Ford Coppola and Peter Bogdanovich.

There has long been a grave misunderstanding of the spoof movie, a genre that takes one movie or cinematic trend and recreates it while mocking it mercilessly. It's easy to write off comedy staples like "Airplane!" and "Spaceballs" as delivery systems for silly non-stop gags, and sure enough, they absolutely are. But at its best, the spoof genre is much more insidious.

Most great spoof movies don't just mock something popular, they mock something serious. "Top Gun" is a self-serious motion picture, one that's seemingly unaware or at least uncritical of its own artificiality and jingoism. Fans of "Top Gun" may laugh at the film's funnier moments but the film itself is not to be laughed at. That's why a film like "Hot Shots!" is such a delight. It’s mathematically impossible for me to hate anything with John Astin in it, which is probably why I have fond memories of watching Return of the Killer Tomatoes a handful of times as a kid. Revisiting it now as an adult with Arrow Video’s recent Blu-ray/DVD release, Return doesn’t really hold up as the hilarious farce I remembered it as, but despite some uneven jokes, for the most part it is still pretty entertaining and feels like the best Troma movie the Zucker brothers never made.

Speaking of horror-comedies and things returning, Return of the Killer Tomatoes was also recently released to Blu-ray, this time by the Us chapter of Arrow Video. I know, you’re thinking to yourself “Return of the Killer Tomatoes, really?” Yes, really, and honestly, it deserves every inch of the Criterion-like treatment that Arrow Video gives their releases. It’s not a great movie, and it definitely doesn’t retain a lot of the novelty established by the original, but it features a very young and sex-starved George Clooney, and even though it recycles a lot of footage, it’s actually a pretty fun time. It’s not up there with Return of the Living Dead, but it has a fan base, of which I am a member.

June is ending on a quiet note for horror and sci-fi home entertainment releases, as we only have six titles coming our way on June 28th.

Blue Underground has shown some love to two cult classics with their Blu-ray double feature of Circus of Fear and Five Golden Dragons, and Arrow Video is resurrecting another cult classic (albeit one that is a bit more recent) with their Return of the Killer Tomatoes Special Edition Blu-ray.

Other notable titles being released this Tuesday include Alien Strain, Shark Exorcist, Forgotten Tales, and Hotel Inferno.

Delivery guy pays a visit to a woman for more than just a delivery and she will see him again tomorrow, as will many others. He is killed in his truck. Horatio (David Caruso) notes the presence of ligature marks on his neck. He was also stabbed repeatedly by box cutters. Horatio no longer gets any witty one-liners. Ryan: "Do you think it might have been personal?" Horatio: "It usually is Mr Wolfe, it usually is."
