Following on from Sam Raimi’s endeavour into the fantastical world of Oz last spring, we now have another spin-off from the treasured and widely renowned world created by author L. Frank Baum. This time, adapting his grandson Roger S.Baum’s novel, directors Will Finn and Dan St. Pierre bring us Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return, delving into this surreal universe in computer animated form.
Though biding her time in Kansas, Dorothy (Lea Michele) is alerted to the danger ongoing in her beloved Oz, with the dastardly Jester (Martin Short) wreaking havoc in the name of the Wicked Witch of the West, turning innocent civilians into marionettes. Transported back magically with the help of the Scarecrow (Dan Aykroyd), the Tin Man (Kelsey Grammer) and the Cowardly Lion (James Belushi), Dorothy then has a task on her hands to reach the castle, embarking on an adventure across Oz alongside...

Chicago – The so-called “legend of Oz” will cease to be legendary if they keep producing lame re-engineerings of the 1939 classic “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.” Close on the heels of last year’s dud, “Oz the Great and Powerful,” comes the dully rendered “Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return.”
Rating: 2.5/5.0
The screenplay – by Adam Balsam and Randi Barnes – is strictly boilerplate, with no consideration for creating something different for the Dorothy and Oz story, just an odd updating of the Kansas atmosphere and a rather depressing disaster area in the town after the first tornado. The voice casting of TV actress Lea Michele (“Glee”) as Dorothy is a sure sign of a way to lower the budget, and although some of the elements are interesting (the voice of Patrick Stewart as a talking piece of wood), overall the film will work as a glazed-eye babysitter for the kids, while adults...

Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return
Written by Adam Balsam and Randi Barnes
Directed by Will Finn and Daniel St. Pierre
USA, 2014
Roughly a minute after the opening credits of Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return end, the Lion (no longer Cowardly) not-so-playfully threatens to give the Tin Man an “oil change.” Although this is but the first of many groaners to come, it at least establishes an accurate, if unentertaining, tone to the picture. There might be a nugget of an interesting story in this adaptation if the computer animation wasn’t so cheap-looking and flat, or if the character development in the script felt earned or logical, but Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return is a mostly poor excuse for a start to the summer movie season in terms of family-friendly fare.

The warning signs pile up early on in Will Finn and Dan St. Pierre's animated Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return.
There's that clunky, passive title; the credit informing us that the movie is not based on any of L. Frank Baum's 40 public-domain Oz books, but rather a book by Roger Stanton Baum (who?); and the fact that, while it purports to pick up the day after the tornado from The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy (Lea Michele) now lives in modern-day Kansas. (The early 2000s, anyway, judging from the gas prices.)
That's a baffling decision that isn't paid off by anything that follows, as the Scarecrow (Dan Aykroyd) uses a rainbow-based kidnapping machine to pull Dorothy back to an Oz that has been taken over by the Wicked Witch's brother, the Jester (Martin Short at ...

It’s a new year and film fans are looking forward to this year’s crop of movies. Some are more anticipated than others. Here is an alphabetical list of 14 of my most eagerly awaited films for 2014.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2: The first of several planned sequels to The Amazing Spider-Man ups the ante this time with three villains: Electro (Jamie Foxx), the Rhino (Paul Giamatti) and the Green Goblin (Chris Cooper). There is also a rumor that Felicity Jones may be playing the Black Cat. In the film, our arachnid hero learns more about the mystery of his parent’s deaths while the threat from Oscorp and its reclusive owner Norman Osborn begins to grow. Andrew Garfield reprises his role of the heroic Peter Parker/Spider-Man, and Emma Stone is back as his lovely love interest Gwen Stacy. Marc Webb directs. The film comes out on May 2 nd.

In what looks like a film that escaped the bargain bin at Wal-Mart, we have a new trailer for the delayed animated sequel Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return. With animation that feels unfinished and cheap, a surprising all-star cast that includes Lea Michele ("Glee") along with veteran actors like Patrick Stewart, Martin Short, Dan Aykroyd, Kelsey Grammer and more populate this film which sees Dorothy Gale's (Michele) return to the magical land of Oz, where she reunites with the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion (along with some silly new companions) to face a new threat, the Jester, who is trying to control Oz with the wand of the Wicked Witch of the West. Yeah, sounds pretty damn stupid to us. New trailer for Will Finn & Dan St. Pierre's Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return, originally from Yahoo: Directed by Will Finn & Dan St. Pierre and written by...

If you thought that Victor Fleming and Sam Raimi had already told you everything you needed to know about the cinematic side of L. Frank Baum.s classic The Wonderful Wizard of Oz series, then you are swirling in a tornado of misinformation. Somehow, a film more cartoonish adaptation than Michael Jackson.s The Wiz is coming to theaters. Variety reports the Oz gang will once again reconvene for Summertime Entertainment.s 3-D animated musical tale Legends of Oz: Dorothy.s Return, which is in a distribution deal with Clarius Entertainment and will see a release in the beginning of 2014. Perhaps in time to try and rack up a Best Original Song nomination? With Academy Award nominated musician Bryan Adams and Toby Chu behind the music, that's not out of the question. The film has been in the works for nearly three years, with accomplished animator Dan St. Pierre and...

This is our first proper look at the forthcoming return to Oz and director Dan St. Pierre and Will Finn have the cast, the audience recognition and a rich and fertile source material so I’m not quite sure why this trailer for Dorothy of Oz didn’t chime with me
Perhaps it is the recent unveiling of Sam Raimi’s Oz, The Great and Powerful which knocked my striped socks off. This animated Oz seems to be visually regressive, grabbing the icons of Baum’s story and the various adaptations over the years and inserted some very generic looking pantomime characters.
“Glee’s” Lea Michele is our Dotty and there’s Kelsey Grammar, Patrick Stewart and Dan Aykroyd along for the ride and I’m keeping an open mind but they’ll need a fierce script to make up for the lack of something special on show here.

There's been an increased interest lately in returning to L. Frank Baum's wonderful world of Oz on the big screen. Sam Raimi is tackling a prequel to the classic Wizard of Oz story with his upcoming Oz The Great and Powerful, and Stephen Daldry (Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close) could be helming a feature film adaptation of the Broadway hit Wicked, which is an origin story for the Wicked Witch of the West. Here's the trailer for another Oz-related tale called Dorothy of Oz, an animated sequel that looks more like a video game than a movie. It follows Dorothy as she returns to save the magical land from an evil jester. I know what you're thinking - why are we featuring this poster? Well, there's no good reason besides that it's a new take on the Wizard of Oz, obviously, and features the voice of Glee's Lea Michelle, who I totally love (yep). Dorothy of Oz is a new animated movie being directed by Dan St. Pierre. Dorothy returns to Kansas to find it devastated by the tornado that had whisked her away to Oz. The home she has been so desperate to return to is severely damaged, the townspeople are packing up. But shortly after arriving in Kansas, Dorothy is magically transported back to Oz where she finds out that it's in trouble and the people need her help, too. Thanks to IMPAwards for originally debuting this poster. The screenplay was written by Barry Glasser & Adam Balsam, based on Roger S. Baum's novel, with original songs written by Tift Merritt.

Dorothy is making her way back to Oz, go figure. But this time it's going to be animated and a musical, which hopefully will be a win-win on Dan St. Pierre's part. First we were teased with the casting for this all-singing, all-animated return to Oz with the likes of Dan Akroyd, Kelsey Grammr, Jim Belushi and Martin Short joining Gleeful Lea Michele, who lands her first leading film role as Dorothy.
In that last link, you get to see some of the early sketches of the characters and today brings us a better look at some of the characters as well as a closer look at some of the more iconic locations from the world. Seth Engstrom’s Art direction has a few shades of Wonderland about it but it’s nice to see Ken Duncan’s character designs ‘fleshed out’.
Currently one of many Oz projects on the go at the moment Dan St. Pierre’s sing-a-long-an-Oz certainly looks right and has a great cast, here’s hoping the Tornado-ravaged Oz script has enough to keep us interested between nostalgic thwacks and musical prods.

Old is new again as Alice in Wonderland turned Hollywood’s collective fickle attention to the power of retreading the world’s classic fairy tales. Of course, the remake industry was already churning in that direction with its never-ending trample of childhoods, but when Tim Burton’s re-imagining broke $1 billion the studios ran, not skipped, back into fantasy land.
1939’s The Wizard of Oz has been revisited before, namely an ill-conceived sequel, a bizarre Michael Jackson tribute, and a Muppet incarnation, but the classic is at the heart of at least four modern trips down the yellow brick road. Sam Raimi and Robert Downey Jr. are committed to Disney’s own re-telling, titled Oz: The Great and Powerful. Comic book artist Todd MacFarlane is shepherding a dark, twisted version. Drew Barrymore was rumored to be producing Surrender Dorothy about Dorothy’s great-great-granddaughter and her dusty, ruby red slippers.

Was Dorothy (Judy Garland) lying to us when she told us there's no place like home in The Wizard of Oz?
Judging from the way movie people are flocking back to Oz, it seems the little girl from Kansas might've missed something in her first trip.
As of today there are six, count them, films in development that have something to do with Frank L. Baum's timeless classic or the Victor Fleming film adaptation and that's not even including the much awaited stage to screen translation of Broadway blockbuster Wicked.
Everyone wants a piece of Oz and projects in development have attracted the attention of people like Drew Barrymore, Sean Astin and even the guy who made Deliverance.
But before we surrender to confusion let's go through each of the projects.

Of all of the Wizard of Oz sequels claiming they're going to happen, Dorothy of Oz is the first one to make good on its promise. In production over at Alpine Pictures, a new teaser website has popped up on the intertubes to give people a bit of an idea of what to expect once this new animated feature hits next April, and showing off a brief bit of the soundtrack. Directed by long-time animator Dan St. Pierre, the film stars Kelsey Grammer as the Tin Man, Dan Akroyd as the Scarecrow, Jim Belushi as the Lion (formerly Cowardly, I love that), and Martin Short as the new villain taking over for the Wicked Witch of the West, The Jester.
