Today is a good day for Demi Moore; it started with the crack-of-dawn announcement of a Golden Globe nomination for best actress — one of five for her Cannes hit The Substance — and will end with an evening soirée to celebrate her lifetime achievement award at the San Francisco Film Festival. It’s part of a ride that began in May, with one of the most riotous screenings in the history of Cannes, and shows no signs of stopping as awards season slips into fifth gear.

“I had hit that point of being a little bit — I don’t want to say defeated, because I wasn’t defeated, and I wasn’t even hopeless, but I was just kind of flat, neutral in a way,” Demi Moore says as she sits in her Beverly Hills home to record an episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast.
The 62-year-old, accompanied by her teacup chihuahua Pilaf, was speaking of the state of her career just before The Substance, the new Coralie Fargeat-directed film in which she gives the performance of a lifetime as a Hollywood star who is increasingly cast aside as she ages, and resorts to extreme measures to try to retain her youth and beauty.

A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame literally cements many talents with a permanent place in the entertainment industry, but, as depicted in Coralie Fargeat‘s body horror satire “The Substance,” a star can also represent the insecurity in trying to ensure their legacy and value. Despite this toxic underpinning, the star of the film, Demi Moore, recently shared in an interview with the Los Angeles Times how she wouldn’t mind receiving this honor one day soon.
“I think it would be a sweet thing,” said Moore. “I think often about it, less for me and more for my children and their children. There was conversation about doing it this year, the feeling like, ‘Wow. The timing would be perfect.‘ But there’s a bit more bureaucracy involved.”

‘The Substance,’ ‘The Girl With the Needle,’ ‘Emilia Pérez’ Among European Film Awards Craft Winners
Coralie Fargeat’s body horror movie The Substance, Jacques Audiard’s Mexican crime musical Emilia Pérez and Magnus von Horn’s Danish period drama The Girl With the Needle are among the first winners of the 2024 European Film Awards, picking up Efa Excellence Awards in the technical categories.
Benjamin Kračun won best cinematography for his lensing of The Substance, a campy feminist fable starring Demi Moore as Elisabeth Sparkle, an aging celebrity who takes a dangerous drug that promises to restore her youth. The Efa jury praised Kračun’s use of “highly stylized lens distortions and manipulations” to explore Sparkle’s physical and psychological demise. “It is loud and glossy, but also manages to eke out an unexpected intimacy and vulnerability. The audience is transported through to an unbearably painful, and hilariously raucous ending.”

Now that Revenge director Coralie Fargeat’s body horror satire, The Substance, is available to stream exclusively on Mubi, the main cast members have been sharing some spoiler-y behind-the-scenes photos to social media.
The story focuses on an acclaimed actress turned celebrity host of a daytime exercise program (Demi Moore) who gets replaced by a younger star, sparking a confrontation between the two women that ultimately turns violent.
That's the basic outline. If you want the very gory details, spoilers will follow.
Moore's character, Elizabeth Sparkle, makes use of a secret cell replicating procedure to produce a younger, "more perfect" version of herself, Sue, played by Margaret Qualley.
Ignoring the warning that they "are one," Sue begins to "disrespect the balance" after getting a taste of fame and decides not to wake Sparkle up, while continuing to extract the serum from her older self's body needed to maintain her survival.

Coralie Fargeat’s Revenge (2017) thrilled audiences with its never-ending finale chase sequence through hallways lubricated in Shining-level quantities of blood. The French filmmaker’s follow-up, The Substance, amps up the gore, adding a strong dose of Cronenbergian body horror. Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) is a star, a big enough one to merit her own on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, in fact. But when we meet her, she’s on the back nine of her career. Through mouthfuls of prawns—never pausing to close his mouth or swallow––Hollywood executive Harvey fires Sparkle from her gig as the host of a popular aerobics TV program. Harvey’s matter-of-fact explanation surrounding Sparkle’s age being the liability in this business, could be perceived as refreshingly honest if it wasn’t so openly sexist and retrograde.

Tales of the folly of beauty have been told since time immemorial. Once human beings understood the irreconcilable fact that youth and beauty are natural attractants even though the ravages of time and age are impossible to hold back, cautionary stories of characters either looking to hold on to their beauty forever or simply trying to recapture it have cropped up. These are stories with characters who become so obsessed with their own vanity that they're willing to commit crimes or atrocities in order to maintain it are viewed as people who've fallen from grace, their external beauty masking their internal corruption.
In recent decades, these tales have grown a new wrinkle, as they've absorbed the effects that society, industry, and the media have had on reinforcing such damaging ideals. Just using cinematic examples, there've been films such as "Looker," "Death Becomes Her,...

Moore's character, Elizabeth Sparkle, makes use of a secret cloning procedure and the titular substance to produce a younger, more perfect version of herself, Sue, played by Margaret Qualley. How is this accomplished? Well, Miss Sparkle "births" Sue through her back in an extremely bloody sequence.

Once upon a time in Hollywood, Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) was a star whose Walk of Fame plaque was a prime tourist attraction and nonstop selfie backdrop. Now, Sparkle hosts a fitness morning show that carbon-dates back to the 1990s. Her odious, sexist boss, Harvey (Dennis Quaid) — we’re sure the name has no real-world significance or symbolic import at all, nope, no siree Bob — has handed Elisabeth her walking papers so he can recast the a.m. slot with some younger, hotter model. A gorgeous woman in the City...

In Coralie Fargeat’s body horror shocker The Substance, Demi Moore stars as Elisabeth Sparkle, a former A-lister who is unceremoniously fired from her fitness TV show by a loathsome studio boss, played by Dennis Quaid. Feeling defeated, Sparkle can’t resist the draw of an experimental new drug called that promises to reveal a younger and even better version of herself.
If you’ve seen the trailer, then you know what happens next: Sparkle takes the leap, injects herself with the mysterious liquid and literally births the new and improved Elizabeth Sparkle — known as Sue and played by Margaret Qualley — out of her spinal cord. The only rule for the body swap is that they must spend one week in one body and one week in the other with no exceptions. Needless to say, drama and shocks unfold in quick succession.

Don’t call it a comeback, Demi Moore has been with us for years. However, with The Substance, the onetime box office star rebounds with a cathartic role that gives new meaning to the saying “Fame is fleeting.” The Coralie Fargeat-directed horror movie, which received a 13-minute standing ovation at its Cannes Film Festival premiere in May, makes its North American premiere tonight at the Toronto Film Festival.
Moore plays TV fitness guru Elisabeth Sparkle, who is shown the door by her chauvinistic network boss (Dennis Quaid) because he wants a younger star. However, a new medical procedure billed as “The Substance” finds its way into Sparkle’s hands, giving her the opportunity to switch off on a weekly basis with her younger self, played by Margaret Qualley. And wouldn’t ya know? That younger self winds up taking over as the host of Sparkle’s show. Similar to Gremlins,...

British royal family news divulges that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry flew to freedom from the evil British Empire in 2020.

Have you ever dreamt of a better version of yourself? One of the most-discussed films coming out of this year’s Cannes Film Festival was Coralie Fargeat’s Revenge follow-up The Substance, a body horror feature that picked up Best Screenplay. Starring Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley, and Dennis Quaid, the wild full trailer has now arrived ahead of Mubi’s September 20 theatrical release.
Luke Hicks said in his review, “Qualley and Moore are naked for a large part of the film, lending their figures––twisted, contorted, dragged, deformed, depicted in extreme close-ups, and thematically sexualized––to a movie that’s making some very strong, unpopular claims about a woman’s body image in the 21st century. Fargeat’s overarching perspective on Sparkle’s hellish descent couldn’t be less sexualized, depicting naked beautiful people in situations so upsetting one wouldn’t possibly be turned-on. Brace yourself, Canada, “The Substance” is coming.
The explosive body horror film starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, directed by French heatseeker Coralie Fargeat, has been set to open the Midnight Madness section at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.
“Substance” follows Elizabeth Sparkle (Moore), an Oscar winner who commits the high crime of aging in Hollywood. Relegated to a morning fitness show, Sparkle’s world closes in on her when opportunities dry up — until a mysterious stranger offers her the titular substance, a chance at a more perfect version of herself. Sparing any spoilers, Qualley comes into play as the idealized version of Moore. The pair learns that coexisting ain’t easy in Fargeat’s violent fantasia.
Also on the lineup, veteran music video and film director Joseph Kahn will show “Ick,” a tribute to ‘80s creature features starring former TV Superman Brandon Routh and “American Beauty” actor Mena Suvari.

The series will center around Agatha Harkness as she strives to reclaim her magical abilities after being imprisoned by the Scarlet Witch. Actor Joe Locke recently hinted at numerous details about the show, including confirmation that his character Billy Kaplan will be portrayed as gay, with a focus on tasteful representation.
The backlash began promptly, with many fans drawing comparisons to Star Wars’ ‘The Acolyte,’ which was described by its showrunner as “the gayest” Star Wars series yet.
Fans express concern that ideology may overshadow storytelling once more, fearing that diversity, equity, and inclusion (Dei) themes and sexual orientation will be forcefully integrated into the narrative, which they find fundamentally problematic.

Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance focuses on a woman with a familiar problem. Elizabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) is a former actress and contemporary fitness guru on the wrong side of 40 for the entertainment industry, who, as represented here by Harvey (Dennis Quaid), wants to replace her with the next hot young thing. Working in an ultra-blunt style, Fargeat boils Elizabeth’s world down to a few signifiers, among them: Elizabeth’s retro fitness show stands in for fleeting fame; Harvey, one of the broadest caricatures that cinema has offered, is the male chauvinist underbelly of Hollywood, befitting his namesake; and a billboard outside of Elizabeth’s sprawling apartment physicalizes her shifting place in the public.
One of Fargeat’s best symbols, worthy of Billy Wilder’s Sunset Boulevard, is the opening close-up of Sparkle’s Hollywood star as it’s installed and becomes just another bit of set dressing. A...

When the Russo brothers were asked about the sub-par run of recent entrants in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they had a categorical response – it was fatigue. For the past few years, the word superhero fatigue has been the buzz word. But the Russo brothers believe it to be something more, a fatigue with movies across the board. With the advent and multiplication of content, they believe that movies are beginning to lose their charm. But The Garfield Movie might have shown them the mirror.

Coralie Fargeat made a splash with her debut Revenge. But she was only standing in a puddle, endearing niche corners of the global cinephile community to her cinematic bloodlust for sexually violent men and gore-horror filmmaking. With her second, The Substance, she’s fully submerged in the ocean and making waves.

We love rock & roll, and so do most moviegoers, which is why cinema is filled with heroes who get together with their friends to pound out some numbers. Whether they do it for fame and fortune or to just hang out with buddies, pop bands are inherently cinematic, tying together moving images and sound to create something spectacular. That’s particularly true of fictional groups, who often draw from real-world inspirations and transform them into moving protagonists or hated villains.
This list covers ten of the best fictional bands in cinema history. The key word here is “bands,” as we ignore solo acts, even from really good films. So Mac Sledge from Tender Mercies won’t show up, nor will Noni Jean from Beyond the Lights. While one door has been closed for executive producer Elan Gale with the cancellation of “FBoy Island” at HBO Max, another door has been opened with Hulu’s “Back in the Groove.” His latest reality dating series follows three mature women – each in their 40s – as they jump back into the world of dating and test the waters with a pool of younger men in their 20s and 30s.

“As the saying goes, you can’t fall in love with someone else until you fall in love with yourself!” according to the Hulu announcement. “At the Groove Hotel, these three women will have the opportunity to do both! Whether they find the perfect fling, friendship, true love, or something in between, this is their chance to take charge and break through the double standards older women face every day. And they’re going to have a lot of fun doing it!

Jay-z, Lady Gaga and Erykah Badu — all of whom worked with R. Kelly over the years — declined to be interviewed for “Surviving R. Kelly,” the Lifetime series documenting the sexual abuse allegations against the singer, executive producer Dream Hampton told the Detroit Free Press. In a separate interview, with Shadow and Act, she said Dave Chappelle, Mary J. Blige, Questlove and Lil’ Kim also declined to speak.
“Most people just don’t want to touch it,” Hampton said. “[Questlove] was like, ‘I would do anything for you but I can’t do this.’ It’s not because they support him, it’s because it’s so messy and muddy. It’s that turning away that has allowed this to go on.”
In a tweet that he later deleted, Questlove responded, “I always thought Kels was trash. My reason for declining the RKelly docu that I support 10000000 percent is I didn’t...
