London is set to become the capital of fear this winter as the Soho Horror Film Festival makes its eagerly awaited return for 2024. With an expanded hybrid format, this year’s festival promises to be the biggest yet, delivering a chilling mix of in-person and online scares across two weekends. Kicking off at Brixton’s Whirled Cinema from 22nd to 24th November, the festival then moves online for its Sohome Horror Film Festival from 28th November to 1st December, offering fans a ghoulish feast of over 80 films from 17 countries.

The 2024 Fantastic Fest lineup is ushering in spooky season.

IndieWire can announce the full program for the 19th edition of the beloved genre festival. This year, the festival features 28 World Premieres, 23 International and North American Premieres, and 15 U.S. Premieres, including the highly-anticipated releases of “Rosemary’s Baby” prequel “Apartment 7A” and “Terrifier 3.”

Fantastic Fest will take place at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar in Austin, TX, from September 19 through 26. The festival will open with the world premiere of “The Rule of Jenny Pen,” which stars Geoffrey Rush stars as a judge that encounters a bizarre nursing home resident (John Lithgow) who is hellbent on terrorizing the patients.

The Opening Night gala will include “Terrifier 3” and Lionsgate’s horror psychological thriller “Never Let Go” starring Halle Berry and produced by 21 Laps. The film is directed by Alexandre Aja and is a classic home invasion thriller with a supernatural twist.

Pigeon Shrine FrightFest 2024, the UK’s No.1 horror & fantasy film festival, will, for the first time, present its five-day extravaganza at The Odeon Luxe Leicester Square, London, taking over all seven screens, including the two Odeon Luxe West End screens.

Running from Thursday August 22nd – Monday 26th August, Pigeon Shrine FrightFest will showcase sixty-nine features from across the world, including twenty-five main screen premieres and forty-five Discovery Screen titles, embracing the famed ‘First Blood’ strand, the latest genre documentaries, and some exciting restorations and retrospectives. Pigeon Shrine FrightFest 2024, the UK’s premier horror and fantasy film festival, has announced its thrilling lineup for this year’s event. Marking its 25th edition, the festival will run from Thursday, 22 August to Monday, 26 August, taking over the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square in London. For the first time, the festival will utilise all seven screens, including two Odeon Luxe West End screens, to showcase a diverse selection of horror films from around the globe.

The festival opens with the world premiere of Broken Bird, the highly anticipated directorial debut from actress-filmmaker Joanne Mitchell. Based on an original story by Tracey Sheals and Mitchell’s award-winning short Sybil, the film tells the disturbing tale of a mortician, played by Rebecca Calder, whose dark desires spiral out of control.

Closing the festival is the English premiere of The Substance, the latest film from French writer-director Coralie Fargeat, known for her previous hit Revenge.

Over six days and between three venues folks in the Seattle area can congregate en masse to take in an eclectic mix of genre and narrative fare. Created by writer/director Aaron B. Koontz and writer Cameron Burns, the horror-comedy Scare Package was released on AMC Networks’ horror streaming platform Shudder in the summer of 2020. Scare Package is an anthology film that tells a series of blood-splattered, satirical horror stories from various directors, which are being recounted by Chad Buckley (Jeremy King), the owner of a video rental store called Rad Chad’s Horror Emporium. This year, Koontz and Burns have assembled a new team of directors for a sequel to Scare Package, the horror-comedy anthology Scare Package II: Rad Chad’s Revenge, which features the return of Chad Buckley, a character who feels like a combination of Joe Bob Briggs and Randy Meeks.

This week is not only the first week of winter, officially beginning on December 21st, but the week is also capped off by Christmas Day on Sunday, December 25th. As you might imagine, it’s not exactly going to be a big week for new movie releases, with James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water likely dominating any and all movie conversations these next several days.

And don’t forget that Tommy Wirkola’s Christmas genre movie Violent Night is also still playing in theaters through Christmas, the film thus far slaying its way to 55 million worldwide!

What about New genre movies for the week, you ask? Well, there are only four new ones remaining for the entire rest of the year, so let’s take a look at those in one fell swoop.

This looks much funnier than it does scary, though there's ton of crazy gore and blood to be disgusted by anyway. Writer/director Joe Begos‘s holiday horror film Christmas Bloody Christmas – which got an 8/10 review from our own JimmyO that you can read Here – is now playing in theatres, and is also available to watch on the Shudder streaming service. And if the movie does well, Begos is hoping to have the chance to make two sequels back-to-back! The filmmaker revealed his sequel hopes during an interview with Bloody Disgusting’s The Boo Crew podcast.

Christmas Bloody Christmas has the following synopsis:

It’s Christmas Eve and fiery record store owner Tori Tooms just wants to get drunk and party, until the robotic Santa Claus at a nearby toy store goes haywire and makes her night more than a little complicated. Santa Claus begins a rampant killing spree through the neon-drenched snowscape against a backdrop of drugs, sex, metal and violence, ultimately forcing Tori into a blood-splattered battle for survival...

You better watch out because Santa Claus is coming to town. This time, Santa’s a killer robot with a mean streak.

Joe Begos (Bliss, Vfw) is back with the holiday horror slasher Christmas Bloody Christmas, which will release day-and-date in theaters from Rlje Films and streaming on Shudder on December 9, 2022.

“It’s Christmas Eve, and fiery record store owner Tori Tooms (Riley Dandy) just wants to get drunk and party until the robotic Santa Claus at a nearby toy store goes haywire and makes her night more than a little complicated.

“Santa Claus begins a rampant killing spree through the neon-drenched snowscape against a backdrop of drugs, sex, metal, and violence, ultimately forcing Tori into a blood-splattered battle for survival against the ruthless heavy metal Saint Nick himself.”

Sam Delich, Jonah Ray Rodrigues, Dora Madison, and Jeremy Gardner also star in Christmas Bloody Christmas along with Jeff Daniel Phillips and Abraham Benrubi.

The Shudder streaming service has announced that the horror anthology sequel Scare Package II: Rad Chad’s Revenge will be available to watch as of December 22nd – and along with the release date announcement comes the unveiling of a trailer, which you can check out in the embed above! Genre fans will notice that the trailer is packed with homages to famous horror films, including Saw, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, and the Wicker Man remake.

While Violent Night is lighting the box office on fire, there’s another film featuring a Santa with a bit of bloodlust: Christmas Bloody Christmas. Thankfully this Santa is much less friendly and a lot more homicidal. I was fortunate enough to talk with the writer/director, Joe Begos, and pick his brain on this wonderful little title. He talks about how it started as a Silent Night, Deadly Night remake, only to evolve into a killer robot Santa film. This is probably my favorite conversation yet, so don’t miss it!

Writer/director Eric Pennycoff’s second feature film, the rowdy Christmas horror comedy The Leech, is coming home just in time for the holidays. The Leech tells the story of a Catholic priest, Father David, played by Graham Skipper, who continues to work hard during the holiday season to spread the word of God, despite the fact he no longer has a congregation. When he finds a man named Terry, played by Jeremy Gardner, sleeping in the church and realizes he has nowhere else to go, the good priest invites him to come to his home and spend the night. Father David soon finds out Terry is boisterous and likes to drink and he might not be the only unexpected house guest the priest has for the holidays. In fact, this Christmas might just get so out of control that it ends up causing Father David to question his faith and fight for his sanity.

Review: Recently, I went to the World Premiere screening of Christmas Bloody Christmas at this year’s Beyond Fest. Intending to review this flick, I decided to go in completely blind. Indeed, the title gives a little warning, but the lively introduction of writer/director Joe Begos grabbed my attention. Whatever this holiday offering had, it was going to be rambunctious. And now, I’m happy to say that the wild and wooly, fast-paced fright fest is perhaps one of the best St. Nick inspired horror features in recent years. Bloody, with practical effects, and many F-bombs to offend those who don’t like cursing. And I cannot wait to talk about the rockstar performances of Sam Delich and especially Riley Dandy.

Godzilla has been the subject of a number of books over the franchise’s 68-year history, but Godzilla: The Official Guide to the King of the Monsters aims to be the ultimate illustrated reference book.

Authorized by Godzilla creators Toho, the 256-page beast explores all 32 Japanese Godzilla films with facts and figures, actors and locations, co-starring monsters, and illustrated material.

Welbeck Publishing will release it in hardcover and e-book on October 25. It’s written by Graham Skipper, who you may recognize for his roles in such indie horror gems as Beyond the Gates, Vfw, and Tales of Halloween.
