Back when Will Smith was starring in “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”, the idea emerged for RuPaul to appear on the show.
Smith, however, decided to pass up a cameo from the now-iconic drag queen, who at the time was experiencing a burst of fame as the single “Supermodel (You Better Work)” was rising in the charts.
According to Thea Glassman’s new book, Freaks, Gleeks, and Dawson’s Creek: How Seven Teen Shows Transformed Television, Smith was discussing an upcoming episode with executive producer David Steven Simon when the idea emerged.

“I remember him saying that would be a really bad idea,” Simon recalled in the book, as reported by People. “And I said, ‘No, listen, hear my story —’”
Smith, however, would not have it, and dismissed the notion of bringing a drag queen onto the show.

After months of sitting in limbo, Paul Reiser’s period comedy “There’s… Johnny!” has finally been given a premiere date: All seven episodes launch November 16, on Hulu.
For Reiser, it’s a relief to finally get to show his pet project to the world. “There’s… Johnny!” had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year and was originally set to debut on NBC Universal’s Seeso digital platform in August. But then Seeso was shut down, leaving all of its original series hanging.
Some of Seeso’s existing programs, including “Harmontown,” were sold to another digital company, Vrv. After three or four months of conversations with various potential homes, “There’s… Johnny!” finally landed at Hulu, as part of an overall distribution deal the streaming service signed with NBCU.

As Seeso further winds down operations, insiders have confirmed that upcoming comedy “There’s…Johnny!” won’t launch at the end of the month as originally planned.
“There’s… Johnny!” was originally set to debut on August 24, but according to insiders close to the show, producers are now looking to find a new home for the period comedy, set in the world of “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” circa 1972.
The decision at Seeso to shelve “There’s… Johnny!” comes after other shows also haven’t premiered as planned, including Season 2 of Dan Harmon’s “HarmonQuest,” which was supposed to return at the end of July.
Created by Paul Reiser and his “Mad About You” producer David Steven Simon, “There’s… Johnny” premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in April.

Here’s… the first trailer for Seeso’s new Johnny Carson show!
Feast your eyes on the colors of the 1970’s, also known as “the decade that taste forgot”: The putrid chartreuse of a shag carpet, blinding mustard swivel chairs, busy cutouts on a wood paneled desk. Set to the hum of a snappy tune evoking earlier days, this trailer drums up enough excitement without actually showing anyone’s face — though the talent on board boasts Seeso’s biggest names to date.

Billed as a “fictional comedic trip back in time,” it sounds like a period riff on “The Larry Sanders Show.
