As we’ve mentioned before in this series, horror threequels, or from any movie genre in fact, are notoriously hard to nail, in terms of quality. So, I won’t dwell for too long about which part threes have historically worked, and which should be pinned to the wall to rot like one of the Creeper’s victims. However, as we all know, dollar signs in the eyes of studio execs can be a dangerous thing, and if there’s a franchise primed and ready to be milked for all it’s worth, just one last time, those suits will make it happen. For better, or worse. Which, my dear fellow gore-hounds, brings us nicely around to a franchise that had much potential for multiple installments; Jeepers Creepers. And, yeah, I know what the title sounds like with my broad Northern England accent, so suck it up, haters. The first movie was a pleasant surprise,...

Director Fred Dekker’s 1987 cult classic monster mash The Monster Squad (watch it Here) features variations of the classic Universal Monsters characters Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, The Wolf Man, The Mummy, and the Gillman, but it wasn’t actually a Universal production. So to avoid getting in trouble with Universal, the movie’s effects crew at the Stan Winston Studio had to create their own specific designs of the creatures… but that didn’t stop them from sneaking homages to the original monsters in there. It has been known for a while now that designers Steve Wang and Matt Rose hid the face of the original Creature from the Black Lagoon somewhere on the neck of their Gillman suit. Now – as pointed out by Monster Squad super-fan Shawn Robare of Plastic Rocket Pop – the exact location of that face has been found!

With a love of cinema woven into its DNA, The Monster Squad helped indoctrinate ’80s kids to the classic monsters. The generation that grew up watching it on home video and HBO look back on the 1987 film with the same reverence director Fred Dekker had for the Universal monster movies, and now they’re passing it down in a similar fashion. There’s no better way to introduce the next generation than with the new 4K edition.
Conceived as “The Little Rascals meets the Universal Monsters,” the cleverly-plotted film clocks in at a tight 82 minutes. The punchy script by Dekker and Shane Black doesn’t have an ounce of fat on it, save for the casual homophobia, misogyny, and body shaming of the time. Drawing inspiration from Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, human characters offer well-placed levity and a bevy of memorable one-liners, but the monsters are played straight.

The Primetime Emmys are not necessarily known for honoring projects featuring casts that are primarily minority/people of color. The TV academy has never, for instance, given the Best Drama Series trophy to such a show. The statuette for Best Comedy Series has been won by a series featuring a largely minority cast precisely once: “The Cosby Show” in 1985. But the category of top limited/anthology/miniseries has paid golden tribute to programs with mostly minority casts a handful of times before, helping give Netflix’s “Beef” with its predominantly Asian American lineup a genuine shot to take home the biggest prize.
“Beef” tied with “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” for the most nominations among all non-regular series programs with 13. It’s presently in the lead among Gold Derby voters in the limited series race with 16/5 combined odds. Its star Ali Wong is also in first place among limited lead actresses,...

Nicolas Cage is eating well in the lead-up to releasing his first Western, The Old Way, and starring as the immortal vampire Dracula in the trailer for Chris McKay’s supernatural comedy Renfield. While Cage never goes out of style, he’s enjoying a resurgence akin to Hollywood sweetheart Brendan Fraser. Arguably, Cage could have his pick of any project. Still, he recently told /Film he’s eager to return to the world of Brian De Palma’s 1998 noir thriller Snake Eyes. Cage played Rick Santoro in the conspiracy-driven mystery, an Atlantic City police detective investigating the murder of a high-profile boxer. Could Cage and De Palma join forces for Snake Eyes 2? Never say never.
Speaking with /Film’s Jeremy Smith about myriad projects across his colorful career, Cage revealed that since they made Snake Eyes, he’s wanted to work with De Palma again.

There just aren’t enough horror westerns. There are a handful, sure, but they can more or less be counted on two hands. There are even fewer good ones: some, like Near Dark and Ravenous, are memorable and deserving of classic status. Some, like The Burrowers and Ghost Town, are a lot of fun. The rest tend to be titles like Dead in Tombstone and are best left forgotten. One of the most recent hybrids, 2015’s Bone Tomahawk, is considered “fringe” horror at best by some, not considered horror at all by others.
Director Aaron B. Koontz (Scare Package) obviously agrees with me about this lack of horror westerns, which is why his latest film The Pale Door is a terrific genre mashup that finds a traditional oater interrupted by a supernatural nightmare. Zachary Knighton plays the leader of a gang who scheme to pull off a daring train heist.

He appeared in Knives Out in a scene-stealing role, he also recently directed a segment in the horror anthology Scare Package, and now he’s playing a cowboy who must take on a coven of witches for Aaron B. Review by Stephen Tronicek
When you try to attack a genre piece, especially a Western, on a low-budget the story and characters have to do a lot of the heavy lifting. Sure the costumes might look stagey and the frame a little too clean for the period, but at least there’s a good theme to hold onto. The Pale Door, directed by Aaron B. Koontz (Camera Obscura), unfortunately doesn’t quite get there. While it has a few good performances and spirit to spare, it doesn’t have the story to rise above it’s lower budget trappings.
The Pale Door could be best described as a horror/Western. It’s a film about a group of outlaws, including brothers Jake and Duncan, who fail to rob a train and end up in the clutches of a mysterious whorehouse.

"I understand there was a reward?" Rlje / Shudder has released the first trailer for a horror western titled The Pale Door, the latest bloody offering from Camera Obscura director Aaron B. Koontz. After a train robbery goes bad, two brothers leading a gang of cowboys must survive the night in a ghost town inhabited by a coven of witches. This is a hell of a setup and a hell of a freaky reveal once they get to this brothel and discover what's going on. Starring Devin Druid, Zachary Knighton, Bill Sage, Pat Healy, Natasha Bassett, with Stan Shaw and Melora Walters. At first glance this reminds me of From Dusk Till Dawn, trapped in one saloon fighting off nasty demons. The witches crawling all over the ceiling are frickin' scary. If you’re a fan of horror and western films, there’s a great sounding film coming that combines the two genres. It’s called The Pale Door and I love the concept!
The story follows “a gang of cowboys and a mysterious woman who seek shelter in a seemingly uninhabited ghost town after a disastrous train robbery. Seeking help for their wounded leader they are surprised to stumble upon a welcoming brothel in the town’s square but soon discover that the town is home to a coven of witches and blood-thirsty wolves.”
This sounds like a film that I would really enjoy. I love these kinds of stories and this could be a ton of fun. The movie has an ensemble cast that includes 13 Reasons Why star Devin Druid, Zachary Knighton (The Hitcher), Melora Walters (Magnolia), Bill Sage (We Are What We Are), Pat Healy (The Innkeepers), Stan Shaw (Rocky), Natasha Bassett,...

Exclusive: 13 Reasons Why star Devin Druid has been set to lead cast in horror-western The Pale Door, which is executive-produced by Cold In July novelist and co-producer Joe R. Lansdale. Production is under way in Oklahoma on the feature, which is repped for world sales by Amp International.
Author Lansdale is also a creative and script consultant on the film from writer-director Aaron B. Koontz (Camera Obscura). Pic follows a gang of cowboys and a mysterious woman who seek shelter in a seemingly uninhabited ghost town after a disastrous train robbery. Seeking help for their wounded leader they are surprised to stumble upon a welcoming brothel in the town’s square but soon discover that the town is home to a coven of witches and blood-thirsty wolves.
The ensemble cast includes Zachary Knighton (The Hitcher), Melora Walters (Magnolia), Bill Sage (We Are What We Are), Pat Healy (The Innkeepers), Stan Shaw (Rocky), Natasha Bassett, Noah Segan (Looper) and Tina Parker (Better Call Saul).
Script comes from Keith Lansdale, Cameron Burns and Koontz. Producers are Ashleigh Snead, Matthew Thomas, and Roman Dent, and Koontz and Burns for Paper Street Pictures. James Norrie and Inderpal Singh are also producing for Amp. David Guglielmo is casting director.
Director Koontz said, “I love the idea of mixing these two disparate worlds of horror and western, and to do so with the help of Joe and Keith Lansdale, feels like the perfect devil’s playground. It’s 3:10 To Yuma meets The Descent, but doused, and then set on fire with psychological horror. Once this gets going, it’s relentless.”
Amp’s Norrie commented, “Buyers are looking for high concept genre projects that stand out from the crowd. This is a film about cowboys battling witches. With rabid wolves and unholy ravens. The response from the market has been electric and we couldn’t be more excited to be involved.”
Druid was a breakout star in Netflix’s controversial hit 13 Reasons Why and will be returning as a key figure for season three as well as starring with Tom Hanks in upcoming historical-drama Greyhound. Knighton is a co-lead on Magnum P.I. for CBS.
Walters is a regular on the Hulu show Pen15 and Noah Segan will be seen in Rian Johnson’s upcoming crime caper Knives Out. Bill Sage can next be seen in sci-fi thriller The Wave.

Contentious horror threequel Jeepers Creepers 3 is coming to TV a lot sooner than you think, thanks to Syfy’s ongoing 31 Days of Halloween event.
Word comes by way of Dread Central, confirming that Victor Salva’s troubled and indeed long-in-development flick will swoop onto television on Saturday, October 28th at 9pm, before Syfy stages an encore showing on Sunday, October 29th at the earlier time of 7pm.
Since Jeepers Creepers 3 was first hatched, Salva’s follow-up has become the cinematic equivalent of a hot potato. Major theaters chains quickly distanced themselves from the project, restricting Jeepers Creepers 3 to one-night-only screenings back in September.
Of course, as I’m sure you’re well aware, Victor Salva’s criminal record is the sole source of controversy, given the filmmaker was convicted for sexual misconduct with a minor more than 10 years ago. His victim, Nathan Forrest Winters, has since issued...

From Jigsaw to Leatherface to Amityville: The Awakening, this Halloween season will soon present horror fans with an embarrassment of riches as theaters across the globe begin hosting all sorts of cinematic ghosts and ghouls.
But if there’s one movie that was quietly shunned by distributors, it’s Jeepers Creepers 3 (for good reason, too, but more on that later). Yes, after years spent languishing on the brink of development, Victor Salva’s threequel faced another uphill battle when many of America’s major theater chains dropped it like a hot potato. Only a small handful of companies stood firm, leading to an exclusive one-night-only screening via Regal Theaters.
Such pent-up demand led to Jeepers Creepers 3 securing a second theatrical showing (October 4th), but other than that, the film’s distribution is about as limited as they come. Leave it to Syfy, then, to step in and secure JC3‘s TV premiere.

*before going into the review, let’s get the obvious out of the way: we at Age of the Nerd would like to take a moment to say we are fully aware of Victor Salva’s criminal history and the moral dilemma that is presented when discussing or financially supporting his movies.
The horror landscape has changed rather drastically in the sixteen years since controversy magnet Victor Salva first introduced slasher-starved audiences to “the Creeper” (Jonathan Breck) and his taste for body parts in the ‘Jeepers Creepers‘ franchise. Since then, there’s been the rise of the torture porn sub-genre and filmmakers like Eli Roth and Rob Zombie, the supernatural found footage genre, an obnoxious onslaught of inferior remakes (fingers shall be pointed specifically at The Wicker Man, When a Stranger Calls and Black Christmas) and a needed return to form thanks to filmmakers like James Wan, David Sandberg and Jennifer Kent.

Stop us if you’ve heard this one. A vaguely demonic creature emerges every 20-something years to terrorize, stalk and ultimately devour residents of a small town before returning to its slumber. Nope, we’re not talking about Pennywise, the freaky killer clown currently rocking the box office in director Andy Muschietti’s It. As horror fans will know, the same modus operandi applies just as equally to the Creeper, the boogeyman that headlined 2001 horror hit Jeepers Creepers and its 2003 sequel. Now, writer/director Victor Salva and actor Jonathan Breck – who donned the hat and trenchcoat as the Creeper in Salva’s previous two entries – aim to resurrect the character once again with Jeepers Creepers 3.
Set between its predecessors, this installment attempts to recontextualize those events while introducing new characters that have been affected by the Creeper’s rampage. While Brandon Smith reprises his role as Sergeant Tubbs from the first film,...

Unlike most other horror threequels, Jeepers Creepers 3 bucks tradition by situating its story between the events of Jeepers Creepers 1 and 2, and though it’s taken an awful long time to take flight, Victor Salva’s nightmarish vision is about to slither onto the silver screen.
But what of the franchise’s future? A Jeepers Creepers 4 has already been pitched before, when it was revealed back in May that Salva had been quietly plotting a new continuation in the Creeper saga. That’s something that series mainstay Jonathan Breck (The Creeper) echoed during an exhaustive interview with IGN, one that touched on everything from make-up and prosthetics to Salva’s criminal record. For the record: Breck is firmly of the belief that the contentious filmmaker deserves a second chance.
As for a potential fourth film, it’s not off the table:
Yeah, if we’re lucky enough to have it happen.

On the eve of release, American Zoetrope and Myriad Pictures have conjured up a trio of terrifying clips for Jeepers Creepers 3, the long-in-development horror flick that’s coming by way of Victor Salva. And therein lies the source of controversy.
Truth be told, the sequel known as Ravenous will soon face another uphill battle if it’s to really attract a mass audience. Jeepers Creepers has always been celebrated as a cult franchise with its own quirks and spooky delights, but the threequel has been a big point of contention amongst horror fans, mostly due to Salva’s heinous crime, for which he served 15 months in state prison. "What happened here, happened before!" He grabs her attention by kidnapping her brother and sending a man under his spell, Desmond Holt (Alimi Ballard), to play the part of Dr. Lewis’ missing sibling.

The episode, directed by series star Joe Mantegna, is a slight departure from the usual procedural elements that make the CBS crime drama tick. As Tyler explains, exploring Dr. Lewis’ backstory, family history and why she has a vested interest in serial killers was a mandate the writers always intended to delve into.

You remember leaving the theater not disappointed, but with little to discuss with dad on the ride home. Dad passed away in 2013, long after the Gary Sinise villain era and a few years before...

'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl': Johnny Depp as Capt. Jack Sparrow. 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl' review: Mostly an enjoyable romp (Oscar Movie Series) Pirate movies were a Hollywood staple for about three decades, from the mid-'20s (The Sea Hawk, The Black Pirate) to the mid-to-late '50s (Moonfleet, The Buccaneer), when the genre, by then mostly relegated to B films, began to die down. But Neptune's mood has apparently improved with the arrival of the new century. He smiled – grinned would be a more appropriate word – on the Gore Verbinski-directed Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,...
