In all honesty, I could never get my head around Monkey Magic as a kid. I remember sitting round the television with my family (it’s what families did back then, before they started breaking up), making no sense of it whatsoever. The first adaptation of Chinese fantasy tale Journey to the West aired in Japan in the 1970’s. China didn’t get in on the act until the 80’s, since then there have been several versions of the programme but it has taken thirty years for the cult TV show to make its transition to the big screen. Director Kensaku Sawada is behind the camera for this lively family adventure which at just under two hours runs the risk of out staying its welcome, fortunately for simians the world over, this big screen monkey has enough magic to see it through. Better put some extra place mats out I suppose…...
