“Our country is going toward the future,” booms a disembodied voice of authority as The Blue Trail begins. In this cinematic vision of Brazil imagined by screenwriter Tibério Azul and vividly realized by director Gabriel Mascaro, it’s no country for old women. An empowering narrative of one woman who refuses to see age as a ceiling, the film serves as a potent warning for viewers about the marginalization of the elderly.
The Blue Trail is a slightly off-kilter refraction of the world as it exists. Perhaps as a result, it’s all the harder to shake. In the Brazil of Mascaro’s film, the government designates its older citizens as “living heritage” and begins legal protocols to sideline them within society. Their patronization under the guise of protection includes forcing retirement, transferring custodianship to younger relatives, and the eventual scuttling off to an old age colony.

One of the many peculiarities of recent U.S. cultural trends is the “over-55 community,” gated havens for well-off retirees who embrace the idea of mono-generational living as an all-comforts interlude before Thanatos comes knocking. In Gabriel Mascaro’s The Blue Trail, a gentle blend of delayed self-realization fantasy and dystopian portent, the cutoff age is 77, which in a way is progress (think of Logan’s Run) and the move is involuntary, but resistance is not futile. Mascaro’s fourth feature can be considered a pair with his previous Divine Love, which also imagined a near-future controlled by a repressive state disguised as a caring Big Brother, but his latest is less deliciously elliptical than earlier films, privileging sensorial rewards that come from the natural world rather than the human body.

Movies about dystopian near futures are a dime a dozen, but it’s hard to recall one that sweeps you up in the defiant joy of liberation like The Blue Trail (O Último Azul). Gabriel Mascaro’s imaginative fable is a slap in the face of age discrimination, with hallucinogenic gastropods, dueling tropical fish and “wrinkle wagons” — trucks with caged flatbeds in which non-compliant oldsters are hauled off while kids snap cellphone photos. The subversive spirit gradually awakened in the 77-year-old central character is echoed in the cheeky pleasures of the plotting in a film both fantastical and grounded in earthy reality.
Mascaro had his international breakthrough in 2015 with the intoxicating Neon Bull, a ripely sensual contemplation of the thin line separating man and beast, which upended conventional notions of machismo through its observation of a makeshift family of animal handlers working the rodeo circuit in Northern Brazil. The cowboy...

Pitched somewhere between science-fiction and fable, director Gabriel Mascaro’s “The Blue Trail” finds a beacon of optimism within its own dystopian view of the future. Set in the director’s native Brazil — and showcasing the astonishing natural beauty (side by side with decay) of the Amazon in every high-definition frame — the film centers a 77-year-old woman, Tereza (Denise Weinberg), in a society that has deemed anyone above the age of 75 an impediment to its economic success. Mascaro sees her differently, and so will we by the end of what unexpectedly turns out to be the greatest South American houseboat movie since “Fitzcarraldo.”
The “Neon Bull” director has always had an incredible visual sense, though his plots tend to lack focus. Not this one. Judging by its concept alone, “The Blue Trail” could technically be classified alongside “Children of Men” on video store shelves. And yet, in both genre and tone,...

Gabriel Mascaro’s “The Blue Trail,” playing in competition in Berlin, marks another great milestone for Brazilian cinema in a year where the country got its first best picture Oscar nomination with Walter Salles’ “I’m Still Here.” Mascaro follows in the footsteps of Salles playing in competition in Venice and Karim Aïnouz playing in competition at Cannes with “Motel Destino,” three consecutive Brazilian films playing in the most prestigious strands of the three most important European film festivals.
“Each one of these films is so different from each other but has great strengths,” Mascaro tells Variety ahead of his Berlinale bow. “I feel very proud to be a part of it.”
“The Blue Trail” takes place in a near future Brazil where the government relocates the elderly to senior housing colonies so the younger generations can fully focus on productivity and growth. Tereza (Denise Weinberg), nearing 80, refuses to accept her fate,...

“The Blue Trail,” Gabriel Mascaro’s dystopian Brazilian movie which is slated to compete at the Berlin Film Festival, has landed on the inaugural slate of newly-launched Paris-based sales banner Lucky Number.
The selection marks Brazil’s return to the Berlinale Competition following “All the Dead Ones” by Caetano Godardo in 2020. Mascaro previously attended the Berlin Film Festival with “Divine Love” which opened at Sundance and went on to play in the Panorama section in Berlin in 2019. Lucky Number has unveiled a first still of the film and will kick off sales at the EFM in Berlin next month.
The politically minded film unfolds on the banks of the Amazon, and is set in a near future, in a society in which the elderly are invited to exile themselves once their expiration date has passed. The Berlin Film Festival has unveiled the lineup for the 2025 edition, running February 13-23. It’s the first official lineup overseen by new artistic director and former BFI London Film Festival leader Tricia Tuttle, who succeeds Carlo Chatrian and brings her background as an American journalist and curator to the annual German showcase. She’s also working with co-directors of programming, Jacqueline Lyanga and Michael Stütz, to help reposition the Berlinale’s profile among the great global film festivals and lure bigger-name filmmakers in the process.
This year’s lineup, announced Tuesday, January 21, features new films from Richard Linklater, Michel Franco, Rebecca Lenkiewicz, Hong Sangsoo (“What Does That Nature Say to You”), Radu Jude (“Kontinental ’25”), and Lucile Hadžihalilović (“The Ice Tower”). Already confirmed in the mix are “Mickey 17” from Bong Joon Ho and Ira Sachs’ Sundance premiere “Peter Hujar’s Day,” plus Tom Tykwer’s “The Light” opening the festival.

Following last week’s lineup announcement, the Berlinale 2025 has now fleshed out its slate with the Competition, Special, and Perspectives sections. Highlights include the world premieres of Richard Linklater’s Blue Moon starring Ethan Hawke, Margaret Qualley, Bobby Cannavale, and Andrew Scott; Radu Jude’s Kontinental ’25; Hong Sangsoo’s What Does that Nature Say to You; Michel Franco’s Dreams starring Jessica Chastain; Lucile Hadžihalilović’s The Ice Tower starring Marion Cotillard; and Rebecca Lenkiewicz’s Hot Milk with Emma Mackey, Fiona Shaw, and Vicky Krieps.
The festival will also include international premieres from Julia Loktev, Mary Bronstein, Kahlil Joseph, and more. In terms of omissions for films that potentially could have been a strong fit: there’s no Steven Soderberg’s Black Bag, Wes Anderson’s German production The Phoenician Scheme, nor Berlinale regular Christian Petzold, who wrapped Miroirs No. 3 only a few months ago.

While Dawn of the Dead established Zack Snyder as a filmmaker to watch, it was 300 that put him on the map. The movie grossed over $450 million at the worldwide box office and made an action star out of Gerard Butler.
Reflecting on his role as King Leonidas while discussing his role in Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, Butler told People that an "insane" number of actors were injured while shooting the 2006 release.
"I remember every day somebody was getting taken to the hospital," the actor recalled. "You’d be doing a fight, you turn around, there’s a guy down there, a spear went in his eye. Another time, you turn around, there’s a guy over there who just fell, broke his ankle. I mean, it was insane."

Margot Robbie and Will Smith's crime movie, which made over $158 million at the box office, becomes a global Netflix hit nine years later. Two of the biggest stars of their time, Smith rose to fame playing a fictionalized version of himself in the sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and transitioned to blockbuster movies during the 1990s, starring in Bad Boys, Men in Black, Independence Day, and more. He started garnering critical acclaim during the 2000s, earning Oscar nominations for Ali and The Pursuit of Happyness, though he didn't win the award until King Richard in 2022.
Similarly, Robbie started her career on television with Neighbours and Pan Am, but broke through with a standout role in Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street and collaborated with more acclaimed directors on Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Greta Gerwig's Barbie. Robbie received critical acclaim relatively early in her career,...

One of popular culture's most beloved and influential genres, sci-fi has produced a number of the best television shows of all time. Dealing with futuristic and imaginative concepts in the vein of time travel, extra-terrestrial life, or artificial intelligence gone rogue, the best sci-fi shows leverage other genres in the vein of drama, horror, or comedy to produce a layered offering that makes use of a unique theoretical premise. From violent science fiction shows laden with gore to underappreciated hidden treasures, there's something for every brand of fan out there.
However, while a compelling central premise is as good a start as a show could hope for, maintaining consistent success across multiple seasons is another matter altogether. For every science fiction television show that has produced a consistent level of excellence across multiple installments, there are two genre offerings that fell off in terms of quality after a promising first season.

Margot Robbie and Will Smith's Focus is filled with twists and turns, backstabbing and secret alliances, and more right up to its final moments, and the film's ending may need some explanation. Focus gained renewed popularity on Netflix, and the star-studded cast of Focus likely had something to do with it. Every character in the film had a part to play in making its mind-bending twists work, but even they couldn't make every surprise in Focus completely clear. There were several major plot points that happened in just the final 30 minutes of the film, and they may need to be explained.

Will Smith and Margot Robbie's 2015 comedy-drama Focus has a lot of star power in its main leads, but it also boasts a surprisingly notable cast of characters. Focus was rather divisive when it came out; it holds a Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 56% and an audience score of 53%. It seemed that no one could agree whether Focus was an entertaining heist film filled with betrayals and twists or if it was an incoherent and overly convoluted movie. Now, however, Focus has gained popularity on Netflix, and it's likely due - at least in part - to the movie's stellar cast.
Margot Robbie and Will Smith's collaboration on Focus was one of the film's main selling points, but it wasn't the only time the actors have worked together. 2016's Suicide Squad reunited Robbie and Smith after Focus, and it gave viewers another taste of their great on-screen chemistry. The 300 prequel show gets a new update from filmmaker Zack Snyder, who comments on its development status. Released in 2007, 300 marked Snyder's follow-up to his 2004 breakout hit, Dawn of the Dead. The film, which stars Gerard Butler as King Leonidas, chronicles the ancient battle of Thermopylae in which 300 Spartans fought the larger army of Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro). Following sequel 300: Rise of an Empire (2014), it was reported earlier this year that the world of the first film is set to return in the form of a prequel TV show hailing from Snyder.
In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Snyder confirms that he is indeed working on a 300 prequel series. Baz Luhrmann has set his new project, “Jehanne d’Arc,” at Warner Bros.
Warners has confirmed that the filmmaker will next take on the epic tale of France’s national heroine and saint Joan of Arc. The teenaged Joan of Arc became a heroine after leading the French army to victory in Orléans in 1429. She was burned at the stake in 1431.
Earlier this year, Luhrmann dropped out of the long-awaited English-language adaptation of Russian novel “The Master and Margarita,” stepping back from the project entirely following concerns over the book rights.
A casting call for the Joan of Arc character will go out Tuesday.
Luhrmann’s directing debut came in 1992 with “Strictly Ballroom,” which began as a short play at the Wharf Theatre in Sydney. The film’s breakout success led to his subsequent string of hits such as “Romeo + Juliet” (1996), “Moulin Rouge!” (2001), “Australia” (2008), “The Great Gatsby” (2013) and most recently “Elvis.

Although some shows can truly stick the landing and produce stellar second seasons, Season 2 is often the worst era for many TV shows. This was because the initial challenges of the first season have often been overcome, and its in Season 2 that a series has to really justify its existence and showcase it had the staying power to tell an ongoing story over the course of years. While shows can sometimes recover from lackluster second seasons, for others, it signaled the beginning of the end and its slow decline into irrelevance.
Some of the most popular TV shows of all time suffered from poor second seasons as they struggled to continue their narrative in a way that felt urgent and engaging. This was the case for comedies, dramas, sci-fi, and zombie shows that had excellent first seasons and failed to live up to their potential in their second outing. While...

Zack Snyder's historical fiction epic 300 ends in tragic fashion, but it doesn't answer all the questions viewers might have had. 300 follows the story of King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) as he leads a group of Spartan warriors to defend against the invading Persian army, led by King Xerxes I (Rodrigo Santoro). One of Leonidas' men, Dilios (David Wenham), narrates the movie and tells the story of the 300 to the world, which inspires the Greeks to fight back against their invaders. While the cast of 300 told that story tremendously well, the movie still left some questions unanswered.
While 300 is mostly known for Snyder's directorial style and its intense action sequences, it also managed to deliver some important themes and messages. 300 continues to endure due to its exaggerated, thrilling action, and as a classic tale of a brave protagonist fighting against insurmountable odds. As a heavily fictionalized retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae, 300 sees Leonidas, the King of Sparta, leading an army of 300 Spartans against the Persian tyrant King Xerxes and his army composed of more than 300,000 soldiers. 300 is still widely regarded as one of the best projects in Zack Snyder's career that was well-suited to his directing and writing styles.
While 300 is heavy on action and the spectacle it creates, the film's cast is equally important to cementing its legacy. Many of the 300 actors' careers were transformed due to the film's success, paving the way for future roles in a variety of projects. Without these performances that provided the necessary dramatic weight and occasional humor to the story, Snyder's creative vision for 300 would not have worked,...

Exclusive: M88 has signed filmmaker Alexandre Moratto for representation.
Moratto’s debut feature film Socrates, made with Unicef on a budget of $20k with a cast and crew of teenagers from São Paulo’s low-income communities, earned him the ‘Someone to Watch’ Independent Spirit Award.
The film follows the titular character, a Black teen from the coast of Brazill and his journey to overcome poverty, grief following his mother’s death and homophobia. It was produced by directors Ramin Bahrani (The White Tiger) and Fernando Meirelles (City of God), who also produced his sophomore feature Netflix’s 7 Prisoners.
The film, starring Christian Malheiros and Rodrigo Santoro, follows Mateus, a poor 18-year-old from rural Brazil who leaves home for what sounds like a solid opportunity—a job at a metal scrapyard in São Paulo, earning enough money to help support his mother and sisters back home. Fans lauded Zack Snyder’s 2007 historical epic film 300, but despite it being a masterpiece to many, one fan managed to point out a massive plot hole that’s been there yet no one has talked about. Was it really a plot hole, or was it one of the director’s deliberate ways to exhibit the real intention of the movie?

300 featured an ensemble cast with big names like Gerard Butler, Lena Headey, Rodrigo Santoro, David Wenham, Michael Fassbender, and Dominic West, to name a few, and it also ended up as a massive commercial success.

Earlier this week, social media scooper @MyTimeToShineH claimed that a 300 TV series is in development. Now, the news has been confirmed by Variety, with the trade explaining that it's still in the "early" stages right now.
It sounds like Warner Bros. Television is still figuring out the creative direction of the show as no writer or platform is currently attached (Max is surely the most likely destination). However, the plan is for this to be a prequel to the 2006 movie directed by Zack Snyder.
Talking of the Man of Steel and Rebel Moon filmmaker, Snyder is said to be in talks to direct and executive produce the 300 prequel, marking his first return to the world of comic books since 2021's Justice League Snyder Cut.
Deborah Snyder, who also executive produced 300, would return in the same role alongside Stone Quarry's Wesley Coller. Fellow 300 producers Gianni Nunnari, Mark Canton, and Bernie Goldmann...

Once again… this is Sparta! A television series based on 300 is reportedly in the works, set to expand the story of the 2006 action film. There’s no word on writers or platform, but Variety reports the prospective TV series will be a prequel to 300, which followed Spartan king Leonidas (Gerard Butler) as he led his band of elite soldiers in battle against the forces of Persian king Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro). Zack Snyder — who directed and co-wrote 300, an adaptation of Frank Miller and Lynn Varley’s comic book series of the same name — is in talks to direct and executive-produce series, per Variety. Deborah Snyder, Gianni Nunnari, Mark Canton, Bernie Goldmann — all of whom produced or executive-produced 300 — are also in talks to return for the TV series, as is Wesley Coller of the Snyders’ Stone Quarry production company, the magazine reports. 300, which also starred Lena Headey,...

300: Rise of An Empire features returning characters and introduces new ones, continuing the battles between Athens, Sparta, and Persia. The sequel explores the aftermath of King Leonidas' death, with Themistokles taking on the role of the lead warrior against Xerxes and Artemisia. The highly stylized 300 movies, criticized for historical inaccuracy, provide an action-packed and dramatic experience for viewers.
300: Rise of An Empire sees a number of characters and cast members carry over from the first film. Loosely based on historical truths, both 300 and its sequel 300: Rise of an Empire tell the story of the battles between Athens, Sparta, and Persia. Though known for their highly stylized elements, the ultra-quotable 300 movies are widely criticized for their lack of historical accuracy despite finding its drama in being a sweeping period piece.

In 2006, you could scarcely go a day without someone shouting, “This is Sparta!” in your face. The iconic line by Gerard Butler’s King Leonidas in Zack Snyder’s 300 became a battle cry for anyone looking to punt an irritant off a cliff. Out of sight. Out of mind. According to sources, a 300 TV series is developing at Warner Bros. TV. It’s early days for what Deadline says could be a prequel to the 2006 film, and fans are already theorizing about the plot, which is unknown. While deals are not in place, we hear Zack and Deborah Snyder could reunite with Gianni Nunnari, Mark Canton, Bernie Goldmann, and Wesley Coller of Stone Quarry for the newly announced project.

Writer, director, and producer Zack Snyder has become forever entwined with comic book cinema, with many devoted fans knowing him best for his work with the DC universe, but once upon a time he directed a very different kind of comic book movie. Nearly 20 years ago, back in 2006, a little movie called "300" blew everyone's minds and kicked itself into the pop culture consciousness, teaching us all about the ancient Battle of Thermopylae, where King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) and his 300 Spartans held off a massive Persian army under King Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro). Sure, it wasn't super historically accurate because it was based on the graphic novel by "Sin City" artist and scribe Frank Miller (with colors by Lynn Varley), but it was impossibly cool. It inspired all kinds of tributes and spoofs and even a spin-off film, "300: Rise of an Empire," which showed the naval side of the battle,...

300 is a visually stunning movie that brings to life the epic Battle of Thermopylae and showcases the Spartans' unyielding bravery and discipline. The movie is not just about action and visuals, but also delivers memorable quotes that highlight the Spartan way of life and the excitement of battle. Paramount has decided to not move forward with a second season of “Wolf Pack,” Variety has confirmed.
Based on Edo Van Belkom’s book series and created by Jeff Davis, the show follows two teens whose lives are changed when a California wildfire awakens a supernatural creature. Season 1 aired in Jan 2023 alongside the “Teen Wolf” movie. Sarah Michelle Gellar, Rodrigo Santoro, Armani Jackson, Bella Shepard, Chloe Rose Robertson and Tyler Lawrence Gray starred.
Sources say Paramount hoped the audience behind the series would have grown from Season 1 to Season 2, but due to the dual Hollywood strikes, the likelihood of that happening was cut short since production was stopped. Season 2 would’ve arrived roughly two years after Season 1 debuted.
The series serves as the latest Paramount+ original to be canceled following “Joe Pickett,” which ended after two seasons in October 2023. Along with the rest of last year’s cancellations including “iCarly,...

Wolf Pack, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, will not return to Paramount+ for a second season.
Although the drama series never was officially renewed for Season 2, the team was actively working on it, with production having been slated to begin in February, sources close to production told Deadline. Series creator Jeff Davis told the cast about the cancellation this week.
It comes as Paramount+ continues cutting costs, which also includes mass layoffs. Bob Bakish addressed this in a memo to his team on Thursday that the company will continue to reduce its global workforce “to operate as a leaner company and spend less” after Deadline revealed over the weekend that the company was bracing for more staff cuts, thought to be in the hundreds including the programming teams.

In the years before Twitter was euthanized, I’d patiently wait for the onset of the holiday season, and the renewal in my feed of the great “Love Actually” Debate. Every year, the best and brightest of the world — middle management apparatchiks, underemployed magazine writers and hall of fame doomscrollers — would chime in, mostly on the nein side, and make their arguments with eloquence. My favorite was ‘You’re a fucking idiot.’
That one I heard a lot.
“Love Actually” turns 20 this month, and I thought it was time for a thorough revaluation. Was it still a glorious double-steak overstuffed Chipotle burrito of humanity, or would I now see it as they did — a foot-long Subway sandwich with way too many olives bought at a South Dakota gas station?
So I watched the movie again this week. I was struck with an unearned epiphany, the kind that you find in a middlebrow holiday romantic comedy.

Audiences can rejoice as there are numerous options to rent or buy the historical epic 300, allowing them to enjoy Zack Snyder's best work. 300 is a visually stunning and hyper-stylized film that doesn't take itself too seriously, offering unforgettable scenes and memorable quotes. Although not available for streaming, 300 is widely accessible for rental or purchase at affordable prices, with the best choice being in 4K for an optimal viewing experience.
Audiences hoping to watch 300 will be glad to know there are plenty of options to rent and purchase the historical epic. 300 is Zack Snyder at his best, and the violent, hyper-stylized story perfectly suits the director's talents and skill set. Based on the graphic novel series by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley, 300 is a fictionalized retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae. King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) is the ruler of ancient Sparta, which is at...

We saw that Brazilian filmmaker Gabriel Mascaro was hard at work on a new fourth feature, and now we have title, cast and minor plot details to share. Titled Outro Lado do Céu (translates to Another Side of Heaven), Rodrigo Santoro (who we most recently saw in the Venice preemed 7 Prisoners) looks to be part of main players on this fourth feature film by Mascaro who reteams with Desvia Produções’ Rachel Ellis (most recently produced the Quinzaine-selected Légua). Look for this to be ready for a major film fest in 2024. Here is the translated synopsis:
In the name of economic recovery, the Brazilian Government created a perennial system of compulsory vertical isolation for seniors over 80 to be confined in a colony.…...
