After seven seasons, the Bordelon family’s journey came to an end. “Queen Sugar” signed off on Tuesday night with a poetic series finale centered around the importance of family — in all its forms.

Series creator Ava DuVernay wrote the finale, titled “For They Existed,” and returned to the director’s chair for the first time since helming the pilot and second episode.

Unfortunately, Athena and Bobby are not going on that cruise any time soon. In a spotlight on the “9-1-1” power couple, played by Angela Bassett and Peter Krause, Season 6’s Episode 3 delves deep into the mystery that started it all.

“The Devil You Know” uncovers what really happened to Tanya Kingston, Athena’s hometown neighbor who was kidnapped decades prior and whose unsolved disappearance led the LAPD officer on the path of becoming a cop.

“It was very surprising to open the script and see that we were going to revisit that storyline, and there was just something very satisfying in that because it was an unsolved murder and a driving force as to why Athena became a cop and how she is and who she is a person,” Bassett told TheWrap in an interview.

“9-1-1” Season 6, Episode 3 takes viewers back to Athena’s (Angela Bassett) origin story first explored in Season 2 that uncovered the frightening, unsolved disappearance of a young girl in her hometown, which spurred her to want to become a police officer. Ava DuVernay will direct the series finale of “Queen Sugar,” OWN has announced.

DuVernay, created the drama series an executive produces, returns to the director’s chair of the show for the first time since Season 1, when she helmed the first two episodes. Since the first season, DuVernay has written for the series a handful of times, with her last credit being as one of four writers on the penultimate episode of Season 6, which aired last fall. Production for the final episode has already begun in New Orleans.

In addition, OWN also announced the rest of directors for the seventh and final season of the show. The series notably has exclusively featured female directors over the course of its run, with 39 of the 42 directors hire to helm episodes being first time scripted television directors. The four-part limited series, based on the DC graphic novel of the same name, tells the story of a near future where America is embroiled in a bitter civil war, leaving Manhattan a demilitarized zone — hence the title of the series. Good news for Star Wars fans in need of a fix: A special episode of Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian, about Luke Skywalker’s surprise return in the Season 2 finale, will premiere Wednesday, Aug. 25 on Disney+.

The installment highlights the technology used to recreate Luke Skywalker and the collaborative process with his portrayer Mark Hamill. Queen Sugar is not coming to a close any time soon.

OWN has picked up Season 6 of the Rutina Wesley-fronted drama, a month ahead of its Season 5 debut.

“What a joy and an honor to continue the stories of Queen Sugar with our partners at OWN and Warner Bros.,” series creator/executive producer Ava DuVernay said in a statement.

“On behalf of every producer, editor, costumer, grip, writer, cast member and all departments involved in making this series, we’re delighted to delve into a sixth season and to bring or beautiful audience more of the Bordelon family.”

Duvernay opted to revamp the fifth season storyline following the production shutdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The new season will take on topics like the Black Lives Matter movement, Covid-19, and more.

Queen Sugar will return with more family drama in 2021. The cast and crew of the OWN TV series has resumed production on the series' fifth season order of 10 episodes.

Work had been underway on season five of the Ava DuVernay series in March when the pandemic caused the shutdown. The new episodes, which will air sometime in 2021, will address the impact of Black Lives Matter, Covid-19, and the November election on the Bordelon family and their community. Several female first-time directors have been hired to film the season.

Own announced today it has renewed for a fourth season Ava DuVernay's critically acclaimed drama series Queen Sugar, ahead of the extended 90-minute season three finale airing Wednesday, August 22 (10-11:30 p.m. Et/Pt).

In addition, Queen Sugar co-executive producer Anthony Sparks will take the reigns as showrunner/executive producer for season four, continuing DuVernay's intention of providing showrunner opportunities to those who have never before held the position.

"Under Ava's creative vision and leadership, Queen Sugar continues to earn a well-deserved reputation for depicting nuanced characters, rich storylines and establishing an inclusive team that inspires and ignites much needed conversations about our society today," said Erik Logan, president, Own. “Queen Sugar” has been renewed for a fourth season at Own, the cable network announced Wednesday.

The renewal comes ahead of the third season finale on Aug. 22. In addition, series co-executive producer Anthony Sparks will take over as showrunner and executive producer on Season 4. Sparks television writing credits include “Undercovers,” “Lincoln Heights,” “The District,” and “The Blacklist.” Previously, Sparks was a cast member of Broadway hit “Stomp.”

Season 3 is produced for Own by Warner Horizon Scripted Television. Ava DuVernay created the series and executive produces along with Oprah Winfrey, Kat Candler and Paul Garnes. Candler is also the showrunner on Season 3. The series is based on the book by Natalie Baszile.

Ahead of Queen Sugar‘s Season 3 finale, Own: Oprah Winfrey Network has ordered a fourth season of Ava DuVernay’s critically acclaimed drama, with writer-co-executive producer Anthony Sparks set as new showrunner/executive producer.

Sparks replaces current showrunner Kat Candler in the new season. The move continues DuVernay’s aim to provide showrunner opportunities to those who have never before held the position, Own says.

The third season premiere of Own drama series Queen Sugar delivered 2.1 million viewers and ranked as Tuesday night's #1 cable telecast in Own's key demographic of women 25-54 (L+3). The acclaimed drama from award-winning filmmaker Ava DuVernay and executive producer Oprah Winfrey was also the night's #1 telecast across all of broadcast and cable for African-American women.

In addition, the season premiere of Queen Sugar ranked as the #1 most social show on Twitter and Facebook in all of cable among all dayparts (non-sports) for the day.

Earlier today, we reported Greg Vaughan has been cast in Own's new Queen Sugar TV series. Bianca Lawson and Henry G. Sanders have also joined the new drama. TV fans will recognize Lawson from series like Pretty Little Liars, The Vampire Diaries, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Selma's Sanders frequently works in film. The veteran actor's most recent TV appearances have been in American Horror Story in 2012 and 2015, and Grey's Anatomy in 2012.

In Queen Sugar, Lawson plays Darla, ex-girlfriend of Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe). Days of Our Lives' Vaughan is Calvin, a cop and longtime married lover of Nova (Rutina Wesley). Sanders is recurring as Prosper Denton, a farmer and old friend of Ernest (guest star Glynn Turman).
