Emceed the very first Grammy Awards show at the Beverly Hilton Hotel

After sitting through three hours of a screening of director Otto Preminger's 3.5-hour film Exodus (1960), Sahl turned to Preminger and said, "Otto, let my people go".

Attended Compton Junior College before graduating from the University of Southern College with a degree in city management.

Joined ROTC when he 15. He left high school, lied about his age and joined the United States Army. It took his mother 2 weeks to get him discharged.

Father was an aspiring New York playwright before moving to Montreal & opening a tobacco shop to support his young family. He later moved the family to Los Angeles where he became a clerk for the Department of Justice.

After high school he enlisted in the Army Air Force and was stationed in Alaska. He edited the base newspaper, Poop From The Group.

Published his memoir "Heartland" in 1976.
