He was the original guitarist for the Foo Fighters. He left the band shortly after the release of their second album in 1997. In 2005, he rejoined the band as a touring guitarist and became a full-time member in 2010.

Father is of German ancestry; mother is of African-American and Native American ancestry.

Original member of the legendary American punk band The Germs.

Fourth (and oldest) member of Nirvana in its final years (1993-1994, or the In Utero era).
