Fictional serial killers are no stranger to the stage, whether they take the guise of Dracula or that most intense of personal stylists, Sweeney Todd. But Off-Off-Broadway acting school/theater T. Schreiber Studios has made the auspicious move to mount its first musical production with the world premiere of a new musical about a real-life slasher.“Jack’s Back!” is about nineteenth century murderer Jack the Ripper. Directed by John Gould Rubin, “Jack” is a madcap look at one man, sausage stuffer Herbert Wingate, who might be able to put a stop to the bloodbath. If it sounds like an atypical thriller, it should. One of the key elements that drew Rubin to the show, which has a score by Tom Herman and a book by Elmer L. Kline, Lee Cardini and Herman, was its compelling mix of styles. “It’s written like a traditional musical, but it reinforces the oddly funny and the scary,...

This month's InStyle cover girl Julianne Moore dished about how she keeps her second marriage sexy.
"I think you need to be away from your children," she told designer and interviewer Tom Ford. "Doing the mommy stuff does sort of squash that area of your life."
The award winning actress--most recently nominated for her role as a lesbian mother in The Kids Are All Right--is married to director Bart Freudlich, with whom she has two children, Caleb and Liv.
"I can feel [sexy] when I'm alone with Bart or when we take a trip," she added.
Earlier this year, Moore recently told The Guardian that the only reason she got married was for her children.
"I had a therapist who said marriage is really a container for a family, and that made sense to me," she said.
Her first marriage to actor John Gould Rubin at age 22 lasted 10 years. In October of last year,...

Moore Re-married For Her Children
Actress Julianne Moore refused to marry director Bart Freundlich until she was advised their union would help raise well-adjusted children.
The redhead beauty's nine-year marriage to actor John Gould Rubin ended in 1995, and she had vowed never to walk down the aisle again.
But Moore changed her mind after an eye-opening therapy session in 2003, following the birth of her second baby with Freundlich.
She says, "For me the only reason to get married was my children. I had a therapist who said marriage is really a container for a family."
Moore, who shares 12-year-old son Caleb and seven-year-old daughter Liv with the filmmaker, now admits her second marriage is a grounding force amid her hectic Hollywood lifestyle.
She adds, "Freud says you need love and work, and a family and a job give you a balance... One element can't give you everything. You can have friends in movies and plays you make, but they're not your family. And you can't expect family to give you the stimulation work is going to provide, because that is not their responsibility."...

"Listening" is the key to good acting, according to Helen Stenborg. Co-starring Off-Broadway at the DR2 Theatre in Morris Panych's "Vigil" gives her the chance to exercise that talent. This two-hander centers on the evolving relationship between a misanthropic young man (Malcolm Gets) and his dying, estranged aunt Grace (Stenborg), who barely speaks. While the 84-year-old Minneapolis native has never played a silent character before, her preparation for this part is basically the same as for any other. There is one major difference: She will not share certain elements of Grace's inner life with Gets or the director, Stephen Dimenna. "Sometimes they ask me, 'What are you thinking?' That's my secret. But it's interesting: If I change my thoughts, I'll get a different reaction from Malcolm." She adds she is able to offer variety in her silent responses, by registering his change of mood.At this point in her six-decade career,...

"I never understood why plays that are political or socially reflective can't be entertainment too," noted David Rothenberg, a publicist, producer, and radio host. "Part of being entertained is being elevated, stimulated. Some of our best theatre is a mirror of what's happening in society that had an enormous effect on people of its time: Death of a Salesman, A Doll's House, Waiting for Lefty, Diary of Anne Frank, and Fortune and Men's Eyes, which changed my life." That last play dealt with sexual brutality in prisons and was so compelling to Rothenberg, he founded the Fortune Society, a group dedicated to advocating for ex-prisoners.These remarks were made as Rothenberg moderated a panel titled Can Theater Inspire Social Change?. The event was sponsored by the Drama Desk, the organization of New York–based theatre critics, editors, and reporters. The lively discussion covered a range of topics and personal experiences.
