What’s more dangerous than a teenage girl? Sexualizing one.
The fear of newfound sexual freedom, particularly the libidos of adolescent girls, were interrogated, explored, and — at times — exploited in ’90s-era high school-set psychosexual thrillers. From the age of characters portrayed, actors’ requests for body doubles, or the questionably problematic market for watching real-life teens undress onscreen, the eroticism of teens in the ’90s still has resonance today.
Now, as Todd Haynes’ “May December” shows the lasting psychological effects of the traumatic grooming of a male tween (Charles Melton), and Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” charts a sexual awakening from a developing child mind in an adult body (played by Emma Stone), it’s only right to return to the trend of coming-of-age sexuality onscreen, most infamously weaponized by a niche genre trend of thrillers framed by teen female perpetrators.
Sex is back onscreen, but what did overt eroticism look like in films past?...

The beginning of "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors" is arguably one of the most relatable opening horror sequences for any disenfranchised youth filled with teenage angst. Introducing our traumatized hero, Kristen (Patricia Arquette), the credits play as Angelo Badalamenti's score transitions into Dokken's "Into the Fire" as Kristen mainlines coffee grinds to stay awake. She's building a papier-maché house of the boarded up structure she sees in her nightmares. Immediately, you empathize with her. She looks like a friend in need (who could also use another pack of cigarettes).
Arquette was the perfect casting choice to be a Nancy for a different generation. As a result, "Dream Warriors" director Chuck Russell had to make an "Elm Street" movie for a different set of teens who would respond to something bigger, badder, and more ambitious than Wes Craven's original and "Freddy's Revenge." The practical effects...

For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit the ambitious small screen project “Roger Corman Presents,” which aired from 1995 through 1999 on Showtime.
Not many remember this, but back in the nineties, the cable network Showtime was extremely centered on science fiction and horror genre fare. They were the original launch pads for “Stargate Sg-1” and “Poltergeist: The Legacy” before they became syndication mainstays. Hell, even their marketing was catered to the science fiction and horror aesthetic.
Like Cinemax, Showtime sought to work out distribution deals while releasing their own original films for primetime and late night slots. While Cinemax and HBO worked with Stan Winston, Showtime collaborated with the one and only Roger Corman. With him and his studio Concorde Pictures, they would produce a series of low budget films that would air over the course of two seasons. With the banner “Roger Corman Presents,” Corman and company...

The Pitch: Two years before Alicia Silverstone would become teen queen royalty for her performance as Cher Horowitz in "Clueless," she made her feature film debut opposite Cary Elwes in the evocative "Lolita" thriller, "The Crush."
The 1990s were a golden era for erotic thrillers, but few were willing to tackle the taboo nature of a sexually-forward teenage girl and a grown man who certainly knew better. Elwes plays a writer named Nick Eliot who moves to a new city for a magazine job, and rents the back house of Cliff (Kurtwood Smith) and Liv Forrester (Gwynyth Walsh), whose 14-year-old daughter, Adrian (Alicia Silverstone) becomes enamored with him. Meghan McCain drew controversy when she joined NBC’s “Meet the Press” as a panelist on Sunday morning, in her first television appearance since her departure from “The View.”
McCain was featured on a panel about President Joe Biden’s domestic spending plan, along with Amy Walter, editor-in-chief and publisher of the Cook Political Report; Leigh Ann Caldwell, NBC News Capitol Hill correspondent; and Eddie Glaude, Jr. of Princeton University. Many viewers expressed their surprise at McCain’s appearance on social media, causing her name and “Meet the Press” to trend on Twitter.
“It’s good to have a McCain back on ‘Meet the Press,'” host Chuck Todd said when welcoming McCain to the panel. “Nice to have you here.” McCain’s father, the late Sen. John McCain, held the record for the most appearances on the show with 73.

That the nation is polarized in politics and many other areas is not really arguable. But few people understand what’s driving the anger that’s creating two separate and increasingly antagonistic spheres of thought.
Bill Maher’s Real Time tackled that issue on HBO Max Friday night, bringing on Tristan Harris, the president and co-ceo for the Center for Humane Technology, a think-tank dedicated to pondering the root causes of our growing divide.
Harris was on the show to discuss the Wall Street Journal report on Facebook’s efforts to make its platform a healthier environment for reasonable debate, while lessening the pernicious effects on social standing and mental health. He noted how Facebook’s methodology of filtering drives traffic on negative comments, thereby often throwing gasoline on a raging debate fire and encouraging even more outrageous behavior.

Tucker Carlson has, apparently, not known peace since the U.S. Census Bureau recently reported that the population is diversifying. He’s theorizing that Democrats are not only behind the country’s changing demographics but that non-white people are celebrating the decline of the white race.
Carlson wrestled with the new population data on a Friday night installment of “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” expressing his concerns surrounding the first drop in self-identified non-Hispanic whites in history and accusing non-white people of “cheering the extinction of white people.”
Tucker Carlson says recent census data showing a decline in the self-identifying white population proves his theory that Democrats are "intentionally accelerating demographic change" to replace voters. pic.twitter.com/vYAcq2GtD2

ABC News’ Rachel Scott put her time in Geneva, Switzerland, to good use Wednesday when she asked Russian President Vladimir Putin directly, “What are you so afraid of?”
In a press conference held after Putin met with President Joe Biden, Scott said, “President Biden has said that he would respond if cyberattacks from Russia do not stop. I’m curious: What did he tell you? Did he make any threats? And a quick follow-up, if I may, sir. The list of your political opponents who are dead, imprisoned or jailed is long. Alexey Navalny’s organization called for free and fair elections and an end to corruption, but Russia has outlawed that organization, calling it ‘extremist,’ and you have now prevented anyone who supports him to run for office. So, my question, Mr. President, is what are you so afraid of?”

One of the ways politicians can shape media narratives in their favor is to feed anonymous quotes to reporters. Another, as we learned on Sunday, is to correct them on Twitter from a secret account with a debonair French alias. As was revealed by Slate’s Ashley Feinberg, Mitt Romney has been doing so under the name Pierre Delecto. Or at least he was before Feinberg outed him. Sadly, the account is now locked. RIPierre.

Two months into his ill-begotten presidency, when Donald Trump flew into a temper tantrum over Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ insistence on recusing himself from overseeing the Russia investigation, he famously bawled, “Where’s my Roy Cohn?” Cohn, in case you haven’t seen the documentary that took its title from the president’s outburst, was the red-baiting witch-hunter from the 1950s who became New York City’s top mob lawyer and, fittingly enough, young Donald’s fixer, mentor, and role model. Cohn had all the charm and scruples of a...

Screaming, flying ‘Autonomous Mobile Swords’ have decimated the enemy in a war on a far-off planet, but now the pesky smart weapons are self-evolving into ever more cruel and deadly new iterations. Cults and their leaders have always equally repulsed, fascinated, and terrified me. The repulsion and terror are obvious markers for any sane person, but some would rather not have it in their lives at all, thank you very much. This is also a lucid and healthy response. But in horror we look for the cathartic in the carnal; and while Bad Dreams (1988) spends a great deal of effort mining a very similar vein as A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987), it succeeds in carving out its own modest slice in the late ‘80s landscape.
Released stateside in April by Twentieth Century Fox, Bad Dreams made back its $4 million dollar budget opening weekend, but petered out after it pulled in just over $9 million total. The good ol’ horror-loving folks at Scream! Factory recently gave us a double dose of hospital-themed terror in high definition with their Bad Dreams/Visiting Hours Blu-ray, which features the two cult classics as well as a handful of new bonus features. Par for the course, Scream’s presentation of the material is yet another home run, making it a must-own for fans or even the uninitiated.
First up on the hospital horror double feature is Bad Dreams, which follows a young woman named Cynthia (Jennifer Rubin) who awakens from a 13-year coma the sole survivor of a religious cult that burned together in a suicide pact orchestrated by an enigmatic leader named Harris (Richard Lynch). Harris believed true spiritual unity awaited his followers if they all died together, but of course with Cynthia surviving, that leaves her leader with some unfinished business. Soon, the young woman begins to fear...

Scream Factory continues their winning streak of releasing horror film favorites with their double feature Blu-ray release of 1988’s Bad Dreams and 1982’s Visiting Hours. They originally released these films together on DVD in September 2011.
Bad Dreams opened on Friday, April 8, 1988 and is, in hindsight, eerily prescient of David Koresh, the leader of the Branch Davidian religious sect who met a horrific end when the FBI closed in on him and his compound ignited into a conflagration on April 19, 1993 in Waco, TX. Jim Jones and the Jonestown deaths in 1978 also come to mind. In this film, the late Richard Lynch plays a cult leader named Harris who convinces a group of people that love and unity are the only ways to live, and he shows that love by dousing them all in gasoline and lighting them on fire. Jennifer Rubin plays Cynthia, a confused and reluctant holdout...

What an amazing week for TV fans. As if you didn’t have enough stacking to do with the new, brilliant season of “House of Cards” on Netflix, there are four other full seasons in this week’s What to Watch that you really should watch front to back. And then there’s the still-amazing “Darkman,” a cult classic that perfectly captures Sam Raimi’s skill at controlled chaos. Finally, we have two ’80s horror flicks in one set in “Bad Dreams” and “Visiting Hours.” Check ‘em all out (Ok, you can skip the genre stinkers).

Syfy has acquired the first two seasons of the New Zealand series The Almighty Johnsons, which “follows the Johnson boys, four typical fun-loving guys – who have inherited the power of Norse Gods.”
Are we finally nearing the end of the “gay panic” defense?

“September? I’m surprised you were able to walk in October.”
We can’t actually post it here, because it’s really, really, really unofficial, but here’s the Lady Gaga/Cher duet we thought was going to go the way of The Day The Clown Cried (Gaga vowed not to release it). What do you think?
Chris Colfer gets ready for a book signing.
Here’s your feel good moment of the day.

You might think that your Mom disapproves of all horror films on principle. At least that’s the stereotype: the wagging finger; the warning that horror films cause nightmares. But the truth is that this is merely a bit of parental judo, reverse psychology designed to push us to watching horror films, because nothing warns us and upholds the moral order like a horror film.
What are the elements of a horror film after all? There is a monster; there is a sense of danger (as critic Joe Bob Briggs puts it “Anyone can die at any time”); the deaths are usually gruesome; and there is usually a moral. If you think about it, fairy tales and horror films are not that far apart – they are even closer to one another in the fairy tales original Grimm-er forms,...
