“The Effects of Lying” uses a single-day timeline, heightening the dramatic tension of unfolding events. This condensed structure echoes theatrical storytelling, compelling characters into quick and often tumultuous transformations.
The narrative focuses on Naveen, whose meticulously crafted life crumbles under successive revelations, with brief glimpses into other perspectives, like his daughter Simran’s, enriching the emotional landscape.
Packed events create narrative urgency, though they occasionally overwhelm the story, leaving certain character arcs less developed. This fragmented approach echoes family dramas where emotional eruptions trigger introspection. Cultural elements provide meaningful context, revealing tensions between familial traditions and personal aspirations within a British-Asian household.
The father-daughter relationship emerges as a poignant core, anchoring the narrative’s chaos through tender moments that illuminate the delicate threads binding families during turbulent times.

Everyone’s tuning in to Missing You on Netflix, and with only five episodes, it’s quick to binge-watch in no time! If you found yourself hooked on this mystery thriller and are craving more of Harlan Coben’s thrilling storytelling, you're in luck.

This is due to his overall deal with the streamer, which involves him adapting his books into TV shows and movies for the streaming platform. Missing You is his most recent Netflix series adaptation, but many of his other books have already been turned into shows for the streaming service.
However, that doesn't mean they're all entertaining. We would hate for you to waste your time going through the rest of Coben's collection on Netflix without knowing which ones are truly worth the binge. That's why we're about to...

Strictly Come Dancing’s bad week of PR just got a bit worse, with one of the show’s most popular judges now being investigated for a remark he made while working as a dancer on the show.
One of the UK’s most popular TV entertainment shows with versions in more than 60 territories around the world, Strictly has weathered a mushrooming number of claims from former contestants that the family-friendly, happy atmosphere on screen enjoyed by millions of viewers is not reflected in the behaviour by the professional dancers to their partners behind the scenes.
Now The Sun reports that one of the Strictly’s most popular faces, Anton Du Beke – who was a dancer on the show from its beginning in 2004, before being made a judge in 2021 – is facing fresh criticism for his remark made in 2009 when he was competing on the show. When faced with his celebrity...

South Asian representation in cinema has come a long way, with increased visibility and recognition in the last few years. However, despite the progress made, it is important to acknowledge that there is still work to be done to ensure more authentic and inclusive portraits of the diverse South Asian community in cinema and provide opportunities for South Asian filmmakers and actors to tell their stories on their own terms. In this regard, director Isher Sahota – of extensive television experience – has teamed up with writer James Hey and producer Jon Tarcy of independent production company Bonaparte Films, to bring to the public “The Effects of Lying”, a British comedy/drama with an all-Asian cast. “The Effects of Lying” is the first feature film for Sahota and Tarcy and has been acquired by the streaming service Itvx.

Netflix has released the first trailer for an upcoming new crime thriller called Safe. The series stars Michael C. Hall and he plays a widowed surgeon named Tom Delaney, whose daughter goes missing. The story follows his journey as he goes out looking for her and in the process "begins unearthing dark secrets about the people closest to him in a wealthy gated community."
The series was created by best-selling novelist Harlan Coben (the “Myron Bolitar” novel series) with a screenplay by Danny Brocklehurst. The series also stars Amanda Abbington, Audrey Fleurot, Hannah Arterton, Emmett J. Scanlan, Marc Warren, Nigel Lindsay and Laila Rouass.
I like Michael C. Hall and I've enjoyed the shows that he's made so I'll definitely be checking this new series out. Check out the trailer and let us know if you'll be giving it a shot!

Michael C. Hall has long been a central part in shows closely associated with danger, whether it comes from the characters he plays (“Dexter”) or his characters deal with what comes after (“Six Feet Under”). From the looks of his new Netflix show “Safe,” he’s moved on to playing someone stuck between the two.
In “Safe,” he plays Tom, a surgeon still dealing with the aftermath of his wife’s death a year after it happened. Raising the rest of his family alone, his world gets upended again when one of his daughters goes missing. To make matters even more complicated, he finds out that the community he’s raised his kids in for so long is made up of at least a few people who are not exactly as they seem.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: Which is your favorite scripted TV show about sports? Old and current shows are fair game.
June Thomas (@junethomas), Slate
I was a big fan of the Freeform show “Make It or Break It,” about the lives of a group of elite gymnasts working toward their dream of competing in the Olympics. Even typing that sentence, I know how hokey it sounds, and yes, it touched on all the clichés about women’s gymnastics – eating disorders, overburdened parents, inappropriate relationships with coaches – but you know what, all those things bubble up in the real sport with depressing regularity.

Oh dear: there's trouble in Strictly Come Dancing paradise. Judge Craig Revel Horwood has been stirring the pot by suggesting that pro Kristina Rihanoff was "gutted" to be paired with Daniel O'Donnell, while another report suggested that Oti Mabuse thought her celeb Anthony Ogogo was an "arsehole" before they started working together (Anthony's insisted that's not true).
But both of those duos could have had it a lot worse, as these six disastrous partnerships from the past prove:
1. Lynda Bellingham & Darren Bennett (series seven, 2009)
How far did they get? Finished in 13th place
What's the problem? We didn't know it at the time, but Lynda's widower Michael Pattemore revealed in his book My Lynda that she didn't get on with her partner Darren - because he was a "miserable git" who wanted to dance solidly with No Fun Allowed. Holby City star Laila Rouass has joked that she didn't have to worry about using correct medical terminology when filming complicated surgery scenes. The actress, who is about to make an on-screen exit as Sahira Shah, told Loose Women that dialogue is dubbed when cast members get their terms wrong. Rouass explained: "The great thing is when you do the theatre scenes you've got the mask on, so you can say whatever you like! You just dub it! As long as you can do the actions. You try to get it right, but if you don't... You should see Guy Henry, forget it, he's awful! "You do have heart surgeons on set when you do the theatre scenes. You've always got medical people to guide you. It's doing the stitches while you're thinking of all this and saying things with authority, otherwise you sound like you don't know (more)...

Thank goodness the wicked Helen did not bring about the end of mankind and civilization as we knew it. This meant the characters of ITV’s Primeval could come back for a fresh go-round. The show took a breather after the third season ended in 2009 and came back in seven and six episode arcs, making for abbreviated fourth and fifth seasons respectively and they are now available as a combined third volume in either standard DVD or, for the first time, as a Blu-ray option from BBC Video.
I find myself enjoying the series more for the characters than the writing, which either leaves holes as big as the anomalies the heroes deal with or are overly convoluted, leaving me wishing for a happy middle ground.

"Conan The Barbarian," the latest adaptation of Robert E. Howard's classic pulp hero, slashed its way into theaters this weekend, marking the franchise's first return to the big-screen since 1984's "Conan The Destroyer." The film takes a fresh start to the Conan legend, and bears no relation to the prior Arnold Schwarzenegger films, but it still draws upon the world that Howard created for his barbaric protagonist.
With that in mind, we're going to take a look at the influences Howard's work had on the film, and examine how closely the film cleaves to the mythos he established.
The film opens with the tale of a magical artifact, known as the Mask of Acheron, forged in ancient times, which was used by the evil sorcerer Xaltotun of the empire of Acheron in his goal of world domination. He was opposed by the barbarian tribes, who defeated him and broke...
