Married to actresses Jean Arthur and Joan Caulfield, who, coincidentally, died within a day of each other in 1991 (a year after Ross himself died).

Started in the construction business, before being talked into becoming a screen actor in 1929. His first work as associate producer was for Hal Roach in 1939.

Regarding his marriage to Joan Bradshaw on May 14, 1961, in Hedda Hopper's "Looking at Hollywood" column dated June 15, 1961, she writes, "When Joan Bradshaw married Frank Ross she promised to give up her acting career forever. So Sue Ladd, Leonora Hamilton, Dorothy Malone, Letitia Fairbanks, and Terry Moore gave her a luncheon to celebrate that decision".
