"Let us bear humble witness." Kinematics has debuted a trailer for a weird little indie film called Hippo, a kooky creation from filmmaker Mark H. Rapaport as his feature debut. It premiered at last year's Fantasia Film Festival and it also played at the Calgary Underground Film Festival earlier this year. Hippo, a peculiar adolescent, and his Hungarian step-sister Buttercup struggle to come of age in late 90s America, under the roof of a mother who has been institutionalized at least once. Reviews describe the film as "an avant-garde sex comedy that unleashes the quirks of Wes Anderson and Jim Jarmusch to their weirdest extents." Huh. Adding that it also "doesn't hold back in exploring taboo subjects... yet offering riotous laughter through the characters' absurdity." The indie film stars Kimball Farley, Lilla Kizlinger, Eliza Roberts, and Eric Roberts. This definitely won't be for everyone, but adventurous cinema nerds should check it out anyway.

Writer Adam Rockoff reteams with director David DeCoteau on a new Lifetime thriller that bears a striking resemblance to this month’s earlier title, Million Dollar Lethal Listing.
In Fatal Fixer Upper, Vivian (Jasmine Aivaliotis) and Ryan (Philip McElroy) are a young married couple preparing to purchase their dream home. Just like in Million Dollar Lethal Listing, the deal is too good to be true: the house is wildly underpriced, the owner is looking for a quick sale, and they’re asked to make a hefty cash deposit.
Unlike the former title, though, there’s no mystery about who the villain is in Fatal Fixer Upper. The film opens with a classic Lifetime cold open that immediately establishes that there is a bad man keeping an eye on things. His identity is quickly revealed as Josh Thomas (Duke Van Patten), the home’s original owner and the person spying on...

An unusual family lives an unusual life in Mark H. Rapaport’s Hippo, one of the stranger films playing at this year’s Fantasia Film Festival. Rapaport drops us into a suburban dystopic home where society’s rules don’t seem to apply, and no subject is too taboo to elicit nervous laughter. Hippo (Kimball Farley) and his Hungarian adopted sister Buttercup (Lilla Kizlinger) share a troubling relationship with each other and their mother, Ethel (Eliza Roberts), as they approach adulthood wholly unprepared for the world outside their doors. A young man on the verge of adulthood, Hippo is an odd duck. He spends his days playing video games, bossing around his mother, and searching for automatic weapons on the internet. It’s the late ‘90s, two of these three...

Eric Roberts doesn’t hold the Guinness World Record for the most screen credits for a living actor. That honor goes to the Indian star Brahmanandam, currently with more than 1,170 titles to his name. But Roberts is quickly catching up. According to his (endlessly updating) IMDb page, he’s appeared in some 700 films and TV shows, making him the actor with the most screen credits in Hollywood working today. Last year alone, he starred in 33 films and there are currently 66 in various stages of production. Not that Roberts is counting (or even has the time to).
Almost four and a half decades after he broke out in 1978 with his Golden Globe-nominated performance in King of the Gypsies, which was followed up with another Globes nod for Bob Fosse’s Star 80 in 1983 and an Oscar nomination for Runaway Train in 1984, the 66-year-old is now...

“This is Kent Dorfman. He’s a legacy from Harrisburg…”
Like we all must, Stephen Furst, the actor who brought Kent Dorfman, a.k.a. the sweet, portly Delta Tau Chi pledge known as Flounder, to life, has passed away. It’d be hard to argue that Furst’s life wasn’t far too short—after all, he was only 63 years old. But though other actors and well-known figures who have passed recently may have made a more lasting or profound mark on the lives of the audience they left behind, Furst’s death hurts a little bit more for me than those other losses, for a couple of reasons.

Louise Brealey has joined the cast of Ripper Street.
The actress - best known for playing Molly Hooper in Sherlock - will play a female physician in the Amazon Prime drama.
"I'm playing one of the first women doctors," the actress told Radio Times. "I'm really excited because I did history at university and I love a bit of research.
"Elizabeth Garrett Anderson blazed the trail in the 1870s and in the intervening decade or so a few extremely intrepid and unusual women started learning to be doctors themselves."
Brealey's character Dr Amelia Frayn will run the Obsidian Clinic in Whitechapel.
She revealed: "I'm dressed very soberly and the other girls are all so ravishing. I'm like a little Jenny Wren. Literally, where are my pretty feathers?!"
The Victorian detective drama was axed by the BBC after two series, but was picked up by on-demand service Amazon Prime Instant Video.

So what exactly led Eric Roberts—aka Julia's older brother and Emma's dad—to shack up with such famous folks as Jeremy London, Janice Dickinson and Leif Garrett as part of the latest installment of VH1's Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew? "Eric quit drugs and alcohol in 1995," the actor's wife, Eliza Roberts (an actress and casting director), tells E! News. "He has no interest in anything, other than marijuana." With family films taking a bite out of the boxoffice, Bryan Michael Stoller hopes Little Bear, a 28-pound Queensland heeler, can follow in the paw prints of Marley, Marmaduke and the Beverly Hills Chihuahua.
Most movies starring a dog, like "Beethoven," use 10 or more look-alike animals. In Stoller's "First Dog," about a foster kid who returns the president's lost dog to the White House, Little Bear is the solo star. He did his own stunts and even barked for postproduction looping.
"I have a credit in the movie as his acting coach, not as a trainer," said Stoller, who directed, produced, wrote and edited the movie, which was made for less than $3 million and screens Tuesday night for the first time for distributors and backers.
As a movie, TV and commercials director and author of "Filmmaking for Dummies," Stoller first sniffed...

Rediscovering Roberts
Eric Roberts never really left, but 2009 audiences are learning (or relearning) the charms of the actor Mickey Rourke has called the best he ever worked with.
By Terry Keefe
(This article is currently appearing in this month's Venice Magazine.)
“Eric Roberts is the [expletive deleted] Man,” proclaimed Mickey Rourke at this past year’s Independent Spirit Awards, while accepting his trophy for Best Male Lead, at the very beginning of a speech which then saw him singling out Roberts, his one-time co-star in 1984’s The Pope of Greenwich Village, as someone who was worthy of a comeback like Rourke had with The Wrestler. From the audience, Roberts himself watched his friend at the podium with what looked to be a combination of embarrassment at being mentioned and some pleasure at the same, finally throwing it back at Rourke by shouting good-naturedly, “Accept your award!” For...
