The 70s and early 80s were the glory years of Hong Kong kung-fu action movies, and as the genre was winding down, one late effort topped them all. The completely bananas Furious, starring martial arts legends Simon and Phillip Rhee, is about to be made widely available again after years of scarcity, thanks to the efforts of distributor Visual Vengeance. Simon, a fierce Kung Fu master, ventures into the city’s gritty underbelly for answers to his sister’s death. There, a cunning spiritual master deceives him, plotting to snatch his piece of an ancient amulet he shared with her. Unraveling the scheme, Simon plunges fists and feet first into a bone-crushing battle for the fate of the world… One thing you’re going to have to accept is that a high-def version of Furious was simply not available — the masters were done on videotape and Vv had to make do with them.

While Stallone and Schwarzenegger took the 80s by storm with their famous brand of one-man-army spectacles, the latter part of the decade would also see a new breed of tough guys branch out into a different trend of action. It wasn’t only about the ripped muscles and the gunplay and explosions. After martial arts had gone mainstream, stars such as Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal would carve out their own little place at the box office as they brought their expertise of hand-to-hand combat to the masses.
Naturally, other studios would want to get in on the action and the best thing about jumping on this trend is the fact that there is still an aspect of originality since each star would be spotlighting a specific sect of martial arts. For example, Michael Dudikoff would showcase Ninjitsu, Seagal showcased Aikido, Phillip Rhee showcased Tae Kwan Do,...

In 1989, the movie Best of the Best had a somewhat abbreviated run in theaters. Only grossing a mere $1.7 million, the movie was a major hit on home video and cable. That’s why, three years later, a sequel, Best of the Best 2, hit theaters… for a while. While the first film has maintained a certain cult status, the sequel, and the two more that followed, have been largely forgotten – until now on this edition of The Best Movie You Never Saw.
Best of the Best 2 came from the same creative team behind the original, including director Robert Radler and producer/ star Phillip Rhee. Intriguingly, it was co-written by a TV actor of the time named John Allen Nelson, who starred on Baywatch for a few seasons, played Paul The Wine Guy on Friends, and has shown up as a guest actor on most of the biggest shows on TV.

Brett Gelman can laugh about it now, but he did feel bad for posting an innocuous message to Matt and Ross Duffer on social media prior to the premiere of Stranger Things 4 that inadvertently read as though Murray Bauman was a goner, leading fans to lose their minds.
Of course, with the arrival of Volume 2 last weekend of the immensely popular Netflix series, fans now know that Murray not only survived, but he was also something of a hero in saving Jim Hopper (David Harbour) and Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) while trapped in Russia, thanks to his smarts, some karate and a huge flamethrower.
The actor revels in Murray’s arc, which began with a shut-in conspiracy theorist in season two. Creating a well-detailed backstory for his character, Gelman understands exactly what makes him tick — and finds Murray quite relatable.

‘Famously incomprehensible’ are among the first words which come up when one Googles 1984′s martial arts picture Furious. ‘Famously incomprehensible’ is about right too, from the awful picture quality to the bizarre story, which is best described as martial artists vs aliens (after a fashion) battling for control of the universe. I had to Google that bit too, so incomprehensible is the story that I couldn’t quite tell what was going on most of the time.
Lovers of purposefully bad movies like The Room and Plan 9 From Outer Space should find much to celebrate in Furious, in which a pensive young fighter named Simon (Simon Rhee) attempts to fend off the forces of evil by repeatedly kicking them in the face.

Recently I found myself in a familiar dilemma: which prized piece of Fox Movie Channel cinema should I review next? When there are so many seriously good and seriously bad movies deserving the Unvaulted touch, how can I decide? But then I turned on our channel just in time to see Wayne Newton, in a shiny shiny jacket, emceeing some sort of mortal combat cage fight in which some dude (some dude I later learned is Chris Penn!) gets kicked in the face. And instantly my problem was solved.
A lot of people get kicked in the face in Best of the Best 2. So many. And people get shot at, and Eric Roberts punches a lot of dudes, and Phillip Rhee throws at least seven guys over his shoulder (I tried to count) and breaks a lot of dudes' bones. Sometimes he even throws a bad dude over his...

Stereo Pictures is expanding its business as it begins to launch its process of converting movies to stereoscopic 3-D.
According to Stereo co-president Phillip Rhee, the goal is to help studios convert libraries of titles to provide the content needed to move the 3-D business to theaters, homes and mobile devices. It also has its sights on new titles and the games market.
The company is beginning technology deployment and recently brought in new partners: former Warner Bros. execs James R. Miller and Dan Romanelli.
Stereo proprietary technology, developed at its R&D site in Korea and designed to convert any digital format to a 3-D format, will be deployed in service bureaus in Los Angeles and Korea. Once set up, the company estimates that it could convert a title in as little as a month and a half.
Filmmakers would participate in the conversion. "The marriage of technology and art is critical,...
