The best and brightest of the U.K. and Ireland were celebrated last night in a star-studded bash at the Newport Beach Film Festival UK & Ie Honours event in London. Those receiving honors included Icon Award honoree Stephen Fry, “Nosferatu” and Artist of Distinction honorees Emma Corrin, Sharon Horgan and Felicity Jones.
Before receiving her honor, Jones was seen admiring Variety’s cover story on her “The Brutalist” co-star Adrien Brody, now considered a frontrunner for the best actor Oscar. Jones too, is in the running, nominated for best supporting actress at both the BAFTAs and Oscars for her performance in Brady Corbet’s American epic. “It’s so nice when you put in all the work for a campaign and it actually pays off,” she told Variety.

Over the years, Hollywood has delivered an abundance of memorable on-screen partnerships -- Bob Hope and Bing Crosby, Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, Paul Newman and Robert Redford, Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy, and Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, among many others. Over 30 years after their first collaboration, it's probably safe to add Matt Damon and Ben Affleck to the list.
Together, the dynamic duo have produced memorable entertainment aplenty, putting their remarkable chemistry to good use in everything from Kevin Smith's "Dogma" to Affleck's "Air." These guys have teamed up on nearly a dozen projects, even for a brief cameo or minor supporting role. Recently, their partnership has intensified with the aforementioned "Air" and Ridley Scott's "The Last Duel," it's a shame they haven't found more films to work on together over the years, because these boys are wicked smaht.

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Dan Baker for Wbgr-fm on January 30th, 2025, reviewing “Flight Risk,” featuring Mark Wahlberg, Michelle Dockery and Topher Grace, directed by Mel Gibson. In theaters since January 24th.
Michelle Dockery is Madolyn Harris, a Deputy U.S. Marshall, whose job it is to find Winston (Topher Grace of “That ‘70s Show”), an accountant for a mobster who seems connected to all corruption. Once Deputy Harris busts Winston on the run in Alaska, and convinces him to squeal on his boss, she has to escort via a rickety propeller plane over the mountains to Anchorage. It becomes apparent that the pilot (Mark Wahlberg), isn’t who he seems to be. Can Deputy Harris land the plane … with no training as a pilot … when it suddenly becomes pilotless?

For all the lil monsters in the world right now, Mama Monster has officially announced the coming of her seventh studio album. Now we can breathe easy, because anyone can admit it was a long time coming.
Lady Gaga’s New Album Will Mark the Iconic Singer’s Return To Pop Music
It was a lovely day to wake up to the news that Lady Gaga’s highly anticipated album finally has a release date.
So far, we’ve tasted “Disease” and her Bruno Mars collab “Die With A Smile,” which was so massively successful it’s still topping important charts to this very day. Obviously we want more, and mama knew that.
To keep the whole thing iconic and classy – it is Lady Gaga we’re talking about here after all – she made sure fans in New York City woke up to a black-and-white billboard with an over-the-top picture of her.

Mel Gibson went almost a decade without directing a movie after his war drama "Hacksaw Ridge" hit theaters in 2016. The actor-filmmaker, whose other directorial credits include "Braveheart" and "Apocalypto," has now ended his dry spell with the release of his new movie "Flight Risk." It's a very minimalistic, contained thriller that takes place on a tiny plane and centers almost entirely on just three actors for the majority of its runtime. However, some familiar voices also pop up along the way, particularly for those who are fans of a certain classic CBS sitcom.
Gibson, it needs to be mentioned, is a controversial figure who has been accused of antisemitism, in addition to having a battery charge against his ex-wife, which is largely why he doesn't work as much as he once did. But he still does, indeed, get work in Hollywood these days, as evidenced by this thriller, which is being released by Lionsgate.

Mel Gibson returns to the director’s chair for the impressively economical single-location thriller Flight Risk. It’s undeniably trashy, thanks to an egregiously over-the-top performance by top-billed Mark Wahlberg, but it’s also surprisingly enjoyable.
In fairness, it’s not entirely a single-location thriller, as the film starts with fugitive mob accountant Winston (Topher Grace) being apprehended in his remote Alaska motel hide-out by Air Marshal Madolyn (Michelle Dockery), and offered a deal to testify against his boss in an ongoing trial. Winston takes the deal, and Madolyn charters a three-seater plane to fly him to New York, but her plan hits a snag when the pilot, Daryl (Mark Wahlberg) turns out to be a hired killer with orders to kill them both.

Lionsgate’s advertising campaign for “Flight Risk” credits its latest film to “the award-winning director of ‘Braveheart,’ ‘Apocalypto’ and ‘Hacksaw Ridge’,” which seems a circumspect way of recognizing Mel Gibson as its helmer. Unfortunately, the movie’s problem is not that it lacks Gibson’s name, but his personality as a filmmaker. Reminding audiences of those very good pictures sets expectations way, way too high ahead of watching this cheap-looking, shoddily-made, lifeless thriller.
Working from a Black List darling of a script by up-and-comer Jared Rosenberg, Gibson recruits his “Father Stu” co-star Mark Wahlberg to play the villain in a containment thriller that doesn’t even need Academy Award-winning talent, just basic proficiency and a bit of finesse in order to keep viewers on the edge of their seats. Mel Gibson’s first directorial effort since 2016’s Hacksaw Ridge finds the new ambassador to Hollywood working on a distinctly more intimate scale than usual. The inside of a small Cessna plane, to be precise, which is where most of the action of Flight Risk takes place. Depicting the harrowing aerial journey of a deputy U.S. Marshall, her mob-connected witness, and a pilot who turns out to be a hit man, Flight Risk manages to deliver some high-altitude thrills in its breathlessly paced 91 minutes. But its clunky dialogue, uneven performances and less-than-grade-a special effects ultimately make it the Spirit Airlines of airborne thrillers.
The screenplay by Jared Rosenberg is nothing if not efficient, quickly establishing its premise when Deputy Marshall Madolyn (Michelle Dockery) and other officers burst into the tacky Alaskan motel room where mob accountant Winston (Topher Grace) is hiding after making the mistake of skimming millions from his boss.

When Sam Malone showed up to visit on the original Frasier, fans got a thrill seeing old-favorite characters reunite for a one-off episode. But several sitcoms have done those types of cameos one better, casting familiar costars as entirely new characters to add a dose of barely earned nostalgia. Sometimes the ploy works and sometimes it doesn’t, as you’ll see in these five examples of classic sitcom costars who reunited on new shows.
1 Kevin James and Leah Remini
When James tried to reboot his sitcom career with Kevin Can Wait, he soon discovered he didn’t have much chemistry with his new TV wife Erinn Hayes. With little thought to public reaction, James and his producers decided “Why not have Hayes’ character die — off camera — before we start a Season Two?” That’s just what they did, enlisting James’ former TV wife, King of Queens’ Remini, to rekindle some comedy sparks.

For Remini, having one child was enough of a handful. She gave birth to Sofia in 2004, while she was still married to her ex-husband Angelo Pagan. As is the case with many first time parents, raising Sofia took some adjusting to in the beginning stages. One of the things Remini had to learn to deal with was her daughter’s bossy behavior. The actor had an entire morning routine she had to follow to accommodate Sofia’s needs.
“It starts with her waking up,” Remini once said in an interview with Us Weekly.

In the early 1990s, the programming wizards at NBC realized they might be leaving advertising dollars on the table by not providing adolescents a Saturday morning entertainment bridge from cartoons to live-action sitcoms that reflected, in that garish sitcom way, their middle to high school lives. The only serious counter-programming threat in these hours was "Yo, MTV Raps!," so for kids who were more into bubblegum pop than hard-hitting rhymes, there was a demand not being met. And thus the Tnbc block was born.
The linchpin of the Tnbc block early in its heyday was "Saved by the Bell." What began as a spinoff of "Good Morning, Miss Bliss" -- which started on NBC before moving to The Disney Channel -- became a Saturday morning mainstay for both kids looking to do a whole lot of nothing on their morning off from school and hungover adults who knew better but...

Kloots, in particular, found herself tearing up over the emotional episode, as she offered a message to their loyal audience through tears.
“I live with a child, you know, so coming here every day and being able to talk to five, or four people, obviously — five, I’ll include you guys [the audience], cause you’re a part of it — about really fun, silly topics to important topics, but to be able to talk … I’m so grateful for that,” she shared. “I think we can’t forget that. Listen to each other, talk to one another, don’t fight with each other, really appreciate each other’s opinions, because that’s what we got to do everyday. And it was so beautiful.

“The Talk” executive producer Rob Crabbe is getting a little too familiar with TV goodbyes. A year and a half after his previous talker, “The Late Late Show With James Corden,” signed off, he’s now doing the same thing on Friday with “The Talk.”
It’s a different kind of show, and therefore a different kind of goodbye. But still, there are similarities to the sign-off. “The emotional undercurrent of what the shows were trying to accomplish is the same,” Crabbe told Variety. “You’re trying to express joyfulness. You’re trying to make people feel something. And with ‘The Talk,’ we’re giving everybody a little break in their day, the routine of it. After a 15-year run and nearly 3,000 episodes, The Talk is coming to an end on Friday, December 20. The CBS talk show, which served as a great vehicle to promote the network’s lineup and often shined a spotlight on soaps and daytime alumni, began in 2010 following the cancellation of beloved series As the World Turns. The Daytime Emmy-winning program had a very different panel than the one today that’s comprised of Akbar Gbajabiamila, Amanda Kloots, Natalie Morales, Jerry O’Connell, and Sheryl Underwood. When the show began, the show’s panel consisted of Julie Chen, Holly Robinson Peete, Sharon Osbourne, Sara Gilbert (who co-created the program and served as executive producer), and Leah Remini. Melissa Jaret Winokur was a special correspondent. Robinson Peete, Remini, and Winokur were all gone by Season 2. That’s when Underwood and Aisha Tyler were added to the panel. Plenty of comedy stars have popped in for a cameo when their old sitcom costars get a new gig — think Cheers’ Ted Danson visiting the original Frasier or most of the Community cast stopping by Ken Jeong’s Dr. Ken. But some sitcom stars have such amazing chemistry that they need to keep a good thing going.
Here are five pairs of funny people who costarred together in multiple sitcoms…
1 Danny McBride and Walton Goggins
McBride and Goggins headlined Vice Principals as competing a-holes vying to rule the school via promotion to the top job. When McBride went on to create The Righteous Gemstones for HBO, he again enlisted Goggins as a failed child star who once headlined a gospel song-and-dance team. Goggins told Conan O’Brien that McBride “is the funniest person I have ever met in my life.” The two even teamed to desecrate the reputations of Ronald McDonald and the Hamburglar.
