Movies about possession and exorcism must scratch a very particular itch for American viewers. Going back to the mother of that horror subgenre, "The Exorcist," you can see one of the biggest box office hits of 1973, and in the fifty years since, many movies have played with that premise. A filmmaker can do it relatively cheaply, often just needing to rely on fearless performers willing to contort themselves and speak in tongues. And seeing an ordered world enter total disarray is what horror is all about.
William Brent Bell's 2012 film "The Devil Inside" took that to heart, dealing with the threat of possession through a mockumentary, found-footage lens. In the movie's universe, it's a documentary about Isabella (Fernanda Andrade) as she investigates her mother, particularly the grisly murders she committed when Isabella was a child. The mockumentary takes the form not just of a horror movie, but of an expose,...

Exclusive: Westworld is the latest series hit by the pandemic.
HBO is to pause production on the fourth season of the sci-fi Western drama series as a result of a positive Covid test. The Warner Bros. TV-produced show recorded a positive test from a production member as part of its rigorous testing scheme and will pause briefly for two days next week.
In a depressing, but unsurprising turn of events, given the increase in cases across the country, it joins a number of series that have had to hit pause due to Covid. American Horror Story had to pause season 10, while on the other side of the pond, Deadline has revealed pauses for shows such as House of the Dragon and Bridgerton.

Arriving on the heels of his “The Boy” and “Brahms: The Boy II,” William Brent Bell’s “Separation” reconfirms the director’s belief that nothing is scarier than creepy killer dolls. His latest, alas, fails to successfully prove that case, and worse, its story about a recently widowed single father struggling with supernatural phenomena is The outlook is dim for this fright-free thriller when it debuts in theaters on April 30.

"Daddy - where do you think mommy is now?" Briarcliff Entertainment has released an official trailer for a creepy new puppet clown horror titled Separation, from director William Brent Bell of the two The Boy and Brahms: The Boy II films previously. Get ready for more spring horror. The film is about an eight-year-old girl, played by Violet McGraw, who is lonely living among the feuds between her mother and father. When her mother is killed in an accident, things start to take a dark turn in their Brooklyn townhome. Her own puppets and other characters start to come to life. "When the motives of the ghoulish creatures become clear, the lives of everyone are put very much in jeopardy." The cast includes Mamie Gummer, Rupert Friend, Brian Cox, Troy James, Simon Quarterman, and Madeline Brewer. This already does look quite scary from this footage. And finally a good upgrade...

Violet, Justine Bateman’s often sharp commentary on a certain side of the movie business, suggests what might have happened if a protagonist of Kitty Green’s The Assistant decided to stay in her toxic work environment for the rest of her career. Stuck in a different kind of development hell, Violet (Olivia Munn) is a production executive working for an independent producer Tom (Dennis Boutsikaris) who expects her to leverage all manner of her personal life to get the job done. Living with life-long friend Red (Luke Bracey), a screenwriter blacklisted by Tom, she has been guided by a menacing conversation in her head she calls “the committee” (voiced by Justin Theroux) who serves as a gatekeeper between her reality and true happiness. The voice casts self doubt which is sometimes, but not always, contradicted by hand-written notes that appear over the image on screen.

Thandie Newton has long been a fan favorite of “Westworld” viewers thanks to her fascinating performance as renegade host Maeve Millay in the HBO series. She parlayed the excitement around her character into an Emmy win for Season 2. The actress is nominated once again in the Drama Supporting Actress category this year. She submitted the Season 3 episode “The Winter Line” for Emmy consideration.
In this episode, Maeve awakens inside WarWorld, a park set in Nazi occupied territory of World War II. She is quickly reunited with Hector (Rodrigo Santoro) who helps her escape Nazi guards, but she realizes that her love is simply playing out a park narrative having forgotten their past together.

You can now predict the 2020 Emmy Award nominations for the guest categories in the Gold Derby predictions center. Best Drama Guest Actor is the only guest race guaranteed for the outcome not to be a repeat of last year, as incumbent winner Bradley Whitford did not guest star on any dramas this season; he contends for his winning role on “The Handmaid’s Tale” in Best Drama Supporting Actor now. The two men who won before him are back in contention however: 2018’s Ron Cephas Jones and 2017’s Gerald McRaney, both for “This is Us” again. Their co-star Michael Angarano looks to repeat his nomination from last year and Bd Wong from “Mr. Robot” eyes a comeback nomination after being ineligible in this category since his 2017 nomination.
Michael J. Fox was nominated all five times that he submitted for consideration for “The Good Wife” from 2011 to 2016; he reprised the role in “The Good Fight” this year.

“I had a small inkling,” admits Simon Quarterman of his surprise return to “Westworld” in Season 3. The reappearance of his character Lee Sizemore was a shock for viewers who watched the former Delos employee die in the previous season. In a twist only “Westworld” could produce, Lee was brought back in the form of a computer program. “I thought that somehow he miraculously survived this hail of bullets,” says Quarterman with a laugh, “but that was not to be.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Existing in the virtual world hasn’t dampened the actor’s excitement for the role. “Even though he’s now a simulation,” explains Quarterman, “for me there’s still been an arc to his development.” Indeed, it’s been a fascinating journey for a man who began as a narcissist, treating “relationships as transactional in nature.” As his story unfolds and he grows empathetic towards other characters,...

“Westworld” took itself back offline on Sunday with its Season 3 finale, which drew 1.8 million multiplatform viewers. That’s down 18.2% from the final episode of the Evan Rachel Wood-led sci-fi show’s second season, which scored 2.2 million overall sets of eyeballs in June 2018.
That 1.8 million number was 13% better than last week’s episode. Perhaps that’s why Dolores is smiling.
For its initial 9 p.m. airing alone, the 75-minute Season 3 closer, titled “Decoherence,” earned 888,000 viewers, which is down a whopping 44.5% from the 1.6 million that tuned in to HBO for the 9 o’clock showing of the second season finale on June 24, 2018. Adding in an encore and streaming via HBO Go and HBO Now, and Sunday’s episode rose to that above-mentioned audience tally.

(Spoilers ahead for the April 19 episode of “Westworld” on HBO)
So, uh, a lot happened on “Westworld” on Sunday, and the sort of low-key spy games that Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) and her crew have been playing have now spilled over into a full-fledged war with Serac (Vincent Cassel) now that Serac is in control of Delos. And on top of that, Maeve (Thandie Newton) is about to go all-out after Charlotte-Dolores destroyed Hector’s (Rodrigo Santoro) pearl.
Maeve didn’t spend a long time mourning, though. She was inside Serac’s Matrix-like virtual construct — her old one destroyed a couple episodes back, as you may recall — trying to interrogate Connells-Dolores when that tragedy struck. Charlotte was presumably going to destroy Maeve as well but she was interrupted by a gunfight and had to flee.

Lee Sizemore came back from the dead on tonight’s episode of “Westworld” Season 3. Well, we thought he did, at first. And when Simon Quarterman — who played Lee on the first two seasons of the Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy-created HBO sci-fi series, before he was shot to death on the Season 2 finale — found out he would be returning for Season 3, he also believed Lee had been somehow resurrected, at first.
“I got a call from Lisa giving me the good news I would be coming back, but she didn’t let me know in what capacity or how — so I was left there for months working out, you know, how on Earth I’m gonna show up in Season 3,” Quarterman told TheWrap. “And just before we started shooting, we were just about to go into rehearsals,...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched the second episode of “Westworld” Season 3.
After a Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) and Caleb (Aaron Paul)-centered premiere, Episode 2 of “Westworld” Season 3 brought the show back to the park and to everyone’s favorite brothel madam-turned-ruthless killer, Maeve (Thandie Newton).
Newton was reunited with Rodrigo Santoro in Warworld, a new environment set in Italy during World War II. After some frustrating back and forths with Santoro’s clueless character, Maeve met up with Lee Sizemore (Simon Quarterman), who was somehow still alive after sacrificing himself near the end of last season, and searched for a way out of the park.
However, after a while it became apparent that this wasn’t the Lee S-s-s-Sizemore she once knew. It turned out that Maeve was not in fact in the real park, but was trapped in a simulation.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Westworld” Season 3, Episode 2, “The Winter Line.”]
And we’re back — not literally back in Westworld, mind you, despite Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) stopping by his former home on the way to Delos headquarters. No, the most notable return in an episode filled with returns is that of the tried and untrue “Westworld” house style. Flashy twists on top of long bouts of bewildering exposition add up to very little substantive development, while plenty of choices simply don’t add up at all. All the work Episode 1 put into rebooting the series is tossed aside this week as “Westworld” screws around in its old game before crashing back to reality — or wherever we are now.

War: What is it good for? A mediocre theme park, say it again!
In this week’s Westworld (“The Winter Line”), we return to the WWII-themed Warworld — and both the robotic Maeve Millay and narrative specialist Lee Sizemore (Simon Quarterman) mock it for being, well, a little corny. It’s hard to blame them: It is the Delos attraction most likely to make History Channel dads scream with glee.

(Warning: This post contains major spoilers for Sunday’s episode of “Game of Thrones.”)
By now, “Westworld” fans probably already expected to see “Game of Thrones” creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss show up as Delos technicians in the second episode of the HBO show’s third season — the very big cameos were reported on by multiple outlets, including TheWrap, before Season 3 even premiered.
But what viewers didn’t know was exactly when and how the “GoT” masterminds would appear in Episode 302, titled “The Winter Line,” which brought us back inside Delos Destinations and showed us Warworld for the first time through a complicated Maeve (Thandie Newton) storyline.
Well, turns out Benioff and Weiss weren’t playing just any old Delos technicians, but technicians who build bots for the still-unnamed Park 4, which is apparently a medieval/fantasy-themed location. And when we see them while Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) and Stubbs (Luke Hemsworth...

Sunday night’s season 3 premiere of Emmy-winning drama series Westworld drew 1.7 million viewers across the night (two linear plays plus digital), down from Season 2’s debut episode. Viewership though, tallied above The Outsider, Watchmen, and Succession premieres, despite competition from the Democratic debate until 10 Pm.
Audience for the 9 Pm telecast drew 901,000 viewers, up 24% from The Outsider‘s premiere and 13% above Watchmen, according to HBO. That’s a drop from Westworld’s Season 2 premiere, which drew 2.1 million viewers at 9 Pm, growing to nearly 3 million with same-night replay and streaming on HBO Go/Now factored in. Episodes of Season 2 went on to average 9.2 million viewers. Season 1 averaged 13.2 million viewers.

After almost two years offline, HBO’s “Westworld” finally unfroze all motor functions on Sunday with its Season 3 premiere. And when it brought itself back online, the Evan Rachel Wood-led sci-fi series brought fewer viewers with it than the show put up the last time it booted up.
When comparing just their initial 9 p.m. airings, the “Westworld” Season 3 premiere, titled “Parce Domine,” earned 901,000 viewers, which is down 57% from the 2.1 million viewers put up by the Season 2 debut of the Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy-created sci-fi series, an episode that aired on April 22, 2018.
Of course, “Westworld’s” second season premiere didn’t have to go head-to-head with a Democratic debate between Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders, which was broadcast from 8-10 p.m. on Univision and CNN.

In just over two weeks, the third season of “Westworld” will debut on HBO with an episode so shrouded in mystery that we don’t even know its title yet. But we do finally have a runtime for the installment.
HBO has confirmed to TheWrap that Episode 301 will clock in at 1 hour and 8 minutes. That’s down 2 minutes from the Season 2 premiere and way down from the 1-hour, 30-minute second season finale.
Last month, the pay-tv channel announced that Season 3 of Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy’s sci-fi series will premiere March 15 at 9/8c — almost a full two years after Season 2 launched with a 70-minute episode in April 2018. As TheWrap exclusively reported, Season 3 will consist of eight episodes, making it shorter than the show’s first two years.

It's time to bring in the big guns.
HBO has dropped an epic new Westworld Season 3 trailer, and it teases a fight to the death for two beloved characters.
The new villain, played by Vincent Cassel starts pulling strings, and pits Dolores and Maeve against each other in what looks like a battle to the death.
Whether they will be able to work together when they realize they are being played, we don't know, but it's certainly an interesting hook to tee up the long-delayed third season of the drama.
We also get more insight into the new character played by Aaron Paul, and fans are either going to love him or hate him.
HBO previously revealed that Westworld Season 3 will debut Sunday, March 15, 2020, at 9/8c.

Sweet child, stop what you’re doing right now and take about three minutes out of your day to watch the official full trailer for “Westworld” Season 3.
To date there have been only a couple of teaser trailers for the new season, appropriately cryptic for a show that plays things close to the vest like “Westworld.” However, this new trailer — available below — reveals just how true the promises are of this season being different from anything the show’s done before.
As the previous Season 3 teases have shown, Dolores’ (Evan Rachel Wood) journey out into the real world has brought her into contact with Aaron Paul’s new character, Caleb. What this particular trailer reveals, however, is just how much of their interactions are actually a new team-up, one born out of familiar necessity, according to Dolores.

Bring yourselves back online, “Westworld” fans: The trailer for the third season of Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy’s HBO sci-fi series has finally dropped.
In the 2-minute, 50-second video Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) is out in the real world, where she encounters a man named Caleb (played by series newcomer Aaron Paul) and quickly brings him over to her side in the battle between the humans and the Hosts. Her plan if things don’t work go their way? “Kill everyone.”
And based on the fact that Vincent Cassel’s unnamed character tells Maeve (Thandie Newton) he wants her to kill Dolores, well, it seems like these two Hosts are going to find themselves in a battle to the death, a standoff that’s teased at the 2:25 mark.

HBO will take viewers back to Westworld in the first quarter of 2020.
The premium cabler network announced Sunday that Westworld Season 3 will debut Sunday, March 15, 2020, at 9/8c.
By the time the series returns, it will have been off the air for 21 months. The production demands of such a high-concept series makes it difficult to commit to airing one a year.

When Westworld Season 3 picks up, the robots will be in the real world, and that will only continue to ramp up the drama.
A previous trailer released at San Diego Comic-Con last year teased many new locations, giving the series a different tone.

Thandie Newton returns to the Emmy race thanks to her fan favorite character Maeve Millay on HBO’s “Westworld.” This is her second Best Drama Supporting Actress nomination after losing last year to Ann Dowd (“The Handmaid’s Tale”). The role previously earned the actress SAG and Golden Globe nominations, and a Critics Choice Award win. Newton also won a BAFTA for “Crash” (2005). This year, Newton has submitted the episode “Akane No Mai” for Emmy consideration.
Maeve and her companions are captured and dragged into Shogun World, which closely mirrors the storylines found in Westworld. Maeve discovers her usual Jedi-like commands only work in this world if she speaks in Japanese, which she switches to at Sizemore’s (Simon Quarterman) urging to befriend the local madame, Akane (Rinko Kikuchi). Akane murders the emissary of a Shogun, who desires her daughter Sakura as a slave, thus embroiling Maeve in a war.

Who will win the Emmy for Best Drama Supporting Actor this year with John Lithgow (“The Crown”) out of the way? Lithgow won in 2017 for playing British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, but he only stayed with the show for one season, which opens the door for a new winner this year. Gold Derby has hosted exclusive web chats with 11 of this year’s candidates, many of them potential first-time nominees. Click the links below to be taken to their full interviews.
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (“Game of Thrones”): Coster-Waldau plays Jaime Lannister, the unscrupulous but loyal brother (and lover) of Queen Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey). The Performer | Billy Porter
The Show | Pose
The Episode | “The Fever” (June 24, 2018)
The Performance | From the instant we laid eyes (and ears) on Pose’s Pray Tell — the boisterous emcee of the New York City ball scene, as depicted on the FX drama — we were enamored. Every exaggerated reaction and whip-smart critique drew us deeper into his orbit, not that we put up much of a fight.
But as the weeks continued, as the show began to gradually strip Pray Tell of his mystique, we found ourselves even more in awe of this complicated character brought to life with fierce conviction by Porter.

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for “Westworld” Season 2, including the finale and its post-credits scene.]
So many people died in the “Westworld” Season 2 finale — some even died for the second time.
Think about that for a second: How many times have you seen Bernard (played beautifully by Jeffrey Wright) die? It happened once in Season 1, when Dr. Ford (Anthony Hopkins) orders him to kill himself. It happened twice in Season 1 if you count the flashback to when Arnold (also played by Jeffrey Wright) orders Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) to kill him. And then it happened again near the ending of Season 2, when Dolores — brought back to life by Bernard and inhabiting a copy of Charlotte Hale’s body (Tessa Thompson) — decides Bernard needs to die so he can be rebuilt and set free in the real world.
But he was still shot dead. For a brief amount of time, the audience is meant to believe Bernard is gone,...
