- The son of a vicar.
- Trained at RADA where he won the Bancroft Gold Medal (1954). He then gained a good grounding in the classics with the Old Vic Theatre company (1955-1957).
- Grew up in Bolton, Lancashire
- Longtime friends with Peter Bowles.
- The final version of Cromwell (1970), at one stage, was one hundred eighty minutes long, but it was cut down to one hundred forty-one minutes, deleting several featured roles in the process including: Felix Aylmer (in his final film) as an archbishop, and Bryan Pringle, Peter Bennett, Tony Caunter, George A. Cooper, and Willam Lucas.
- In 1962 he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company's experimental season at the Arts Theatre.
