Vance started making movies at the age of thirteen. That's when he knew
he wanted to be a cinematographer. He got his degree in Cinema
Production from the University of Southern California (USC) and started
working in Hollywood.
He has worked on over 50 movies thus far in his career. These include "The Terminator", "At Close Range", "La Bamba", "The Dead Pool", "Turner & Hooch", "I Married an Axe Murderer", "Mrs. Doubtfire", "Contact", "Forrest Gump", "The Rocketeer", "Back to the Future, Parts II and III", "The Hunt for Red October", "Jumanji", "Space Cowboys", "War of the Worlds", "The Island", "Evan Almighty", and most recently "Terminator Salvation" and "Avatar". He has also worked on over 150 TV commercials.
As a Director of Photography, he has made four Independent films to date. These are "Blue Movies", "Schemes", "Sonata" and "Graves End". He has also worked as a Director of Photography for Special Effects on "Star Wars I and II", "Pearl Harbor", and "Minority Report". He has also been Director of Photography on several award-winning television commercials.
Vance was personally thanked when "Forrest Gump" won an Academy Award for "Best Special Effects". He was given an award for "Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography" for the film "Sonata" at the Vision Fest Independent Film Festival in New York City in June of 2004. He was also voted "Best Cinematographer" at the California Independent Film Festival in November 2004 for "Sonata." He was nominated as "Best Cinematographer" for the movie "Graves End".
