- Educated at Manchester Grammar School where, at the age of 12, he gave what he described as a "definitive" Gertrude in the school play. His Hamlet on this occasion was the future television historian Michael Wood.
- On 17th May 2007 a celebration of his life was held at the Royal National Theatre in London, where he was engaged in directing a new production of Tennessee Williams ' play 'The Rose Tattoo' at the time of his death. The celebration included excerpts from some of his favourite operas, musicals and plays, home movie footage and featured readings and performances by Helen Cooper , Samuel West , Maria Ewing , Tom Cairns , Fiona Dunn , Sophie-Louise Dann , Nuala Willis , Christopher Blades , Philip Bartle, Nicholas Hytner , Declan Donnellan, Edward Kemp, Meera Syal , Stephen Rahman Hughes , Raza Jaffrey , Maria Friedman , Philip Quast , Ruth Mackenzie, Andrew Lloyd Webber , Nicholas Colicos , Daniela Bechly and Michael Feast.
