- One of the most recognizable voices in Germany, with many movies and television projects under his belt. He also voiced Tom Wilson in the Back to the Future movies, Gary Oldman in Léon: The Professional (1994) and Steve Buscemi in Fargo (1996). In his later years, he was best known for providing the voice of Sheldon Plankton in the German dub of SpongeBob SquarePants (1999).

- Towards the end of his life, he found it difficult to work because he was in so much pain and could only stand up in the recording studio for about fifteen minutes at a time.
- The mask that Petruo wore as Large Head in The NeverEnding Story III (1994) took four hours to apply. Petruo was not allowed to sit anywhere where the mask could be damaged otherwise they would have to delay shooting. Despite this, he had a lot of fun in the role. He was able to go to London twice to have the mask customized. He was enthralled with Jim Henson's Creature Shop and witnessed first-hand the models and figurines being made.
