Her father worked as an engineer for the Shell Oil Company and was working in the Philippines at the time of her birth there.

She was interviewed by Barry Letts for the role of Sarah Jane Smith (eventually played by Elisabeth Sladen) in Doctor Who (1963) in 1973. She also screen tested for the title role in the James Bond film Octopussy (1983) but lost the role to Maud Adams.

She and Duncan Preston were reunited in 1997 but have not remarried.
