In Hulu’s Shardlake, as in Arthurian legend, a hand emerges from a body of water bearing a sword. Though lacking Excalibur’s magical touch, this blade’s discovery does serve the ambitions of a monarch. After splitting England from the Catholic Church in 1534, King Henry VIII and his chief minister, Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean), have begun dissolving monasteries across the realm and seizing their wealth. The decapitation of Cromwell’s representative (Michael Rivers) at an abbey near the remote, boggy town of Scarnsea presents an opportunity to advance that crusade, with Cromwell sending an odd couple of agents to investigate the incident, commanding them to find sufficient reason to shutter the order.

In the third episode, the monks watch in horror as endearingly determined lawyer Matthew Shardlake (Arthur Hughes) and Jack Barak (Anthony Boyle), the cocksure enforcer assigned to accompany him, find the submerged murder weapon on their grounds.

Horror-thriller is a confusing mashup of science, religion and spiritualism, cursed with a sloppy script and bad acting

This horror-thriller occupies the same Victorian shadowlands as The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Penny Dreadful; a not-quite-modern epoch, with its zesty mashup of science, religion and spiritualism, retrofuturist tech and plain retro beliefs. It makes an invigorating backdrop for Irish director Stephen Hall’s second feature. But his script isn’t quite sharp enough and – apart from John Rhys-Davies, who goes at his role with his customary fiery traction, and villain Richard Brake, as ever exploiting a face like an open grave – too many of the supporting cast fall into the distinctly ordinary bracket, acting-wise.

We open with the bobbies bursting in on London’s most-wanted serial killer: William Colcott (Brake), about to dispatch another victim in a long string he is apparently offering up in an occult attempt to resurrect his dead wife.

The title must be a reference to the "Gates of Hell", not just the prison itself. Or perhaps somewhere else more sinister... Set in Victorian London, a chilling thriller at a prison. A serial killer has been sentenced to death by electric chair in the 1890s, but in his final hours, he puts a curse on the prison he is in, and all of those in it. The film stars Michael Yare and Richard Brake, along with John Rhys-Davies & Elena Delia as two post mortem photographers, turned paranormal investigators; plus David Pearse & Peter Coonan. This looks much better than expected, with a scary story to boot. And the intense end of the trailer hints at a big showdown.

Rue Morgue lets us know this week that 101 Films and Trinity Creative Partnership will release The Gates on VOD and Digital platforms on June 27, 2023.

Critics love Martin McDonagh’s new film “The Banshees of Inisherin,” which reunites Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, his two leads from 2008’s black crime comedy “In Bruges” as feuding former friends.

The film had its world premiere at the 2022 Venice Film Festival, where Farrell won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor and McDonagh won for Best Screenplay. Five years ago, McDonagh won the same award for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” which set the stage for an Oscar in the same category. “Billboards” stars Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell also won Oscars.

So could this be the film that might finally get Farrell his first Academy Award nomination? The actor, who netted a Golden Globe for “In Bruges,” is overdue for some Oscar love, as is Gleeson, an Emmy winner for 2009’s “Into the Storm.”

As language is written and spoken over and over again, it evolves. In recent years, "Nice guy" has morphed into a cutting backhanded compliment. It's often used synonymously with two-faced, people who conceal their own insecurities and entitlement with politeness.

"The Banshees of Inisherin" shows a different reason for the social deficiencies of "nice guys." Pádraic Súilleabháin (Colin Farrell) spends the movie trying to mend bridges with his buddy Colm Doherty (Brendan Gleeson), who's decided he doesn't want the two of them to be friends anymore. Pádraic is rebuked because Colm's problem isn't with anything his former friend has done; it's with who he is. Pádraic is a "nice guy," one who's always pleasant and ready with a helping hand, but all he does is farm, drink, and small talk. It tells the story of Matt, a teenager who suddenly discovers his older brother, Deco, has become a vampire. He then has to decide whether to help his brother or the very, very, opposite and kill him.

The first trailer has arrived for the ultra-violent revenge thriller Bad Day For The Cut, which will make its premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The feature debut of director Chris Baugh, the film follows Donal (Nigel O’Neil) who goes on a murderous quest after his mother is killed by some sort of gang (led by David Pearse). What ensues is a barrage of hammers, double-barreled shotguns, and fisticuffs in the wilderness of Ireland, all bound around the age-old concept of revenge.

A horror comedy where staying alive means staying as drunk as possible? Yeah, I think I can get behind this one. While I wouldn’t suggest getting completely shlammered in an attempt to ward off Freddy or Jason, if you ever find yourself trapped on an island full of tentacled aliens off the coast of Ireland, you better grab yourself a pint and start chugging.

Grabbers is a fun little creature feature with enough liquor swigging to get viewers intoxicated off the fumes, but you don’t need beer goggles to enjoy the hell out of Jon Wright’s film. This slick monster romp showcases some whimsical imagination and light-hearted humor, feeling a little bit like a tonal replica of Gremlins, as Kevin Lehane’s script focuses more on comedic entertainment than scares. Good work fellas, next round is on me!

We’ve been covering Grabbers quite a bit on Daily Dead and the horror/sci-fi comedy is now available in the Us on VOD. We were given the opportunity to talk with writer Kevin Lehane about Grabbers, and he told us about his creative process, time on-set, and his thoughts on the finished movie:

How did the idea for Grabbers first come about? Was this something you had been working on for a while or did someone approach you with the story?

Kevin Lehane: No, it was something that came to me while I was backpacking around the world. I was in the Cook Islands at the time and having a hard time of it with mosquitoes. I kept being advised to eat lots of vitamin B and while I was having a few beers the thought struck that it’d be funny if mosquitoes were allergic to alcohol.

Jon Wright’s Irish set horror, Grabbers, feels like a welcome return to the days of the 1980s creature features laced with comedy. After several dead whales wash up on the shores of Erin Island, Garda Officers Ciarán O’Shea (Richard Coyle) and Lisa Nolan (Ruth Bradley) are set on the case. They soon discover the presence of blood-sucking, tentacled aliens on the island, promptly named “grabbers”. However, it soon becomes clear that these creatures have an aversion to alcohol – so let the drinking ensue!

Part of the joy of Grabbers, is that it never takes itself too seriously, balancing both comedic and horror elements single handedly. It replicates the effortless whimsical charm of timeless monster features like Gremlins, Tremors and Critters – ensuring this...

Grabbers is a creature feature from Ireland. But, the film is more than that. Grabbers blends genres, while creating one of the better love stories onscreen. This title, from Belfast born director Jon Wright, utilizes some great creature effects. And, the film has a subtle charm, which comes through strongest in Trevor Forest's cinematography. Grabbers is a memorable film. The film borrows its story from classic b-movies of the '50s. An alien creature has washed up on the Irish shores of Donegal. This monster is hungry. it sets its sights on the local Irish populace. Those under attack quickly learn that the creature is allergic to alcohol. Then, the defenders begin to drink copious amounts of liquor, to the monster's detriment and to the viewer's enjoyment.

With its mix of light drama and warm humour, Grand Pictures production 'Trivia' built up a loyal cult following on Rte last year thanks to clever scripts by Damien Owens and stellar performances by an Irish cast led by Co Down actor David Pearse. Ahead of the return of series two tomorrow night (September 6) on Rte One, Pearse spends five minutes with Iftn to discuss the new series; the influences on his acting career; and shooting the much-anticipated History Channel series 'Vikings' at the new Ashford Studios in Co Wicklow opposite Gabriel Byrne.

The Irish creature feature Grabbers will open theatrically overseas in August. When IFC (who snagged the rights) chooses to roll this one out for those of stateside remains to be seen, and to be honest I cannot wait on a date! This flick looks absolutely bad ass! Good humor, vile creatures, loads of boozing and a hefty dose of laughs? Count me in, 110 percent! Jon Wright directs from a script penned by Kevin Lehane. Richard Coyle, Ruth Bradley, Russell Tovey, Lalor Roddy, David Pearse and Bronagh Gallagher star.

Jon Wright’s “Grabbers”, kinda like the 1990 cult hit “Tremors”, but with Irish people, and lots and lots of liquor. Hey, at least Wright and company are embracing their stereotype, I guess. The film was recently acquired by the good folks at IFC Midnight, though there are no current release date for Stateside monster fans as of yet.
