The Nightmare on Elm Street franchise has been dormant for over a decade now, and despite the fact that people like Mike Flanagan and Elijah Wood are interested in making Elm Street movies, there are no new films on the horizon. Freddy Krueger’s extended vacation is going to continue a while longer. At least we have several films to revisit – and as part our of Halloween celebrations here at JoBlo and Arrow in the Head, we decided to put together a list ranking those films from worst to best. So keep scrolling down to see our take on Nightmare on Elm Street Movies Ranked.
A Nightmare On Elm Street (2010)

Sure, irradiated zombies and bloodthirsty apocalypse bikers can be pretty scary. Draculas and Frankensteins? Scary. Cthulhus… Mothmen… Graboids? The absolute worst. But for indie content creators, no boogeyman or cryptid is quite as hair-raising as the many great and monstrous leviathans ritualistically summoned by the occult and alchemical ritual known as filmmaking. Look: there’s Shaky Financing dragging itself out of the swamp, eyes burning blood red! And there: Collapsing Theatrical Market, unfurling its batwings in the rafters of the old abbey! And so on and so on.
But! As the Cryptkeeper, Vaultkeeper and Old Witch have reminded us many times before, misery loves company. So rather than hanging on the edge of your seat anxiously peering through ragged knuckles at the current (but only temporary!) dumpster-fire state of your latest film project, instead console yourself with the fact that many of your Halloweentime horror favorites have had their own very bumpy rides.

A movie doesn’t have to be good for it to be Good. Better yet, it doesn’t have to be good for it to be meaningful.
For many, A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge is more than a so-bad-it’s-good rewatch; it’s a film to rally around for its gay subtext (and just plain text). Though it was widely panned at its 1985 release, Freddy’s Revenge has since found a vocal audience in the queer community that celebrates much of what it was initially criticized for.
This week on Bloody FM’s Guide to the Unknown, Kristen and Will discuss the movie alongside the super illuminating documentary Scream, Queen: My Nightmare on Elm Street. The documentary focuses on lead actor Mark Patton’s experience shooting the film as a closeted gay man at the time, going through the inner turmoil of being tasked with playing a...

Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
There’s an uneasy tension in Amityville in the Hood (2021) between intentional parody and uncomfortable racism. How much of the film’s stereotypical depiction of Compton, which includes gangs, gun violence, drugs, and sex work, is making fun of the conventions of Hollywood films? Or is this just lazy screenwriting and uninspired scenarios?
Let’s give writer/director Dustin Ferguson the benefit of a doubt and go with the former. Of the three titles he’s made in the Amityville “franchise,” In the Hood is by far the most self-aware. There are even a few moments that play like genuine (read: intentional) comedy!
To be clear, there are still plenty of hiccups here. Like his other films in the “franchise,” Ferguson is...

A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge character Jesse has been recreated as a Bull Airs shoe
A couple weeks ago, the shoe company Bull Airs revealed that they had created a shoe that was designed to look like the Blade character from the Puppet Master franchise. (You can take a look at that shoe Here.) Now they have unveiled a new collection of items that are inspired by the Jesse character from A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge (watch it Here)! This includes the button-up shirt Jesse was wearing during his famous bedroom dance scene, a Freddy-slashed recreation of the hat he wears in the same scene, and… best of all… a shoe that is designed to look like Jesse in that scene, featuring a mixture of his shirt, his jeans, and Freddy’s sweater. Images of the shoe can be seen at the bottom of this article, and more can be found on the Bull Airs website.

Although Wes Craven's 1984 film "A Nightmare on Elm Street" is typically lumped in with slasher movies -- it came out right when the genre was cresting in popularity -- it doesn't quite follow the same structure as its contemporaries in the horror genre. The "Nightmare" movies, because they take place largely within dreams, are slightly more cerebral, bizarre, or imaginative than many of the stalk-n-stab movies that infested theaters at the time. The series also attracted interesting and notable directors who went on to other projects. Chuck Russell directed part 3. Renny Harlin director part 4. Stephen Hopkins directed part 5. And Rachel Talalay directed "The Final Nightmare."

Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
It was with a mix of trepidation and intrigue that I hit play on Dustin Ferguson’s Amityville Clownhouse (2020). The film, first released in 2017 under the title Amityville: Evil Never Dies, is a direct sequel to Amityville Toybox (aka Amityville Terror), the very low budget film about a father who kills his entire family after being gifted a toy monkey for his fiftieth birthday.
Toybox was emphatically not a good film, but it did feature a 10 minute coda that was a) the best part of the film, and b) teased a promising new narrative about a team of paranormal investigators.
Disappointingly this storytelling avenue goes unexplored in Clownhouse, though the sequel does feature a strong opening. First Senator Ty Pangborn (Dan Mauro...

Even if you only have a passing interest in horror films, chances are you've been terrified by Robert Englund. The man who brought Freddy Krueger to life in the "A Nightmare on Elm Street" franchise is a living legend, and fans are soon going to be able to peek behind the striped sweater and razor gloves in the new documentary, "Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story." From the director of The Ruins, Swallowed is a queer horror nightmare about drugs, bugs and the extremes we are willing to endure to protect the ones we love. Benjamin and Dom have been best friends since they were kids – and Benjamin has been in love with Dom for almost that long. But Benjamin is heading to sunny Los Angeles to pursue a new career. Fearing the worst for his friend in the cutthroat city, Dom concocts a plan to make Benjamin some quick cash. All they have to do is a quick drug run across the border. But all is not what it seems, as the bags of drugs they swallow for their smuggling trip turn out to be something far more deadly and disturbing than they ever could have imagined. Plot: After the alleged suicide of her priest brother, Grace travels to the remote Scottish convent where he fell to his death. Distrusting the Church’s account, she uncovers murder, sacrilege, and a disturbing truth about herself.
Review: Hailing from Scotland, Consecration provides a look at grief and identity. Jena Malone stars as Grace, a woman who’s struggling through life, even more so now that her brother has supposedly killed himself. She journeys to Scotland in order to take care of his affairs. But there’s clearly more to his death than it appears and sends Grace on a journey of discovery. What she finds may be surprising to her, but if you’ve seen any sort of horror movie, will be old hat to you. Because unfortunately, while Consecration looks good, there’s not much more beneath the surface.
I really love Jena Malone and could watch her in just about anything.

"Not for the squeamish." Uh oh. Momentum Pics has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Swallowed, the latest from filmmaker Carter Smith. It premiered at a few genre festivals last year, including at Fantasia and Overlook. Not to be confused with the other body horror film Swallow, with Haley Bennett, this one is a bit different. The film follows two best friends on their final night together in a small town, with a nightmare of drugs and bugs and horrific intimacy. "Dripping with blood and pus, Swallowed is queer body horror with all the naked flesh and shocking violations of a classic midnight movie." Starring Jena Malone, Mark Patton, Cooper Koch, and Jose Colon. This trailer seems a bit tame, or they don't seem to want to show all the gross stuff, with only a few quick glimpses near the end. Still seems disgusting. ›››

In the film from Momentum Pictures, “After a drug run goes bad, two friends must survive a nightmarish ordeal of drugs, bugs and horrific intimacy in this body-horror thriller.”
Jena Malone (The Ruins, Neon Demon), Mark Patton (A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge), Cooper Koch (Blumhouse’s They/Them), and debuting talent Jose Colon star.
We were told last year, “Dripping with blood and pus, Swallowed is queer body horror with all the naked flesh and shocking violations of a classic midnight movie.”
Carter Smith wrote and directed Swallowed.

Back in 2008, Carter Smith directed what I consider to be one of the most unsettling movies ever made, The Ruins (based on the equally unnerving book of the same name by Scott Smith), so it's no surprise his new movie, Swallowed, was one of the most nerve-fraying films I saw last year (winning the Jury Prize for Scariest Feature Film at Popcorn Frights). I'm thrilled that Swallowed will be coming to VOD and Digital on February 14th via Momentum Pictures, and we have a look at the tense trailer ahead of its Valentine's Day release!
Written and directed by Carter Smith, Swallowed stars Cooper Koch, Jose Colon, Jena Malone, and Mark Patton in one of the best performances I've seen in years.
In case you missed it, Mark Patton has a GoFundMe page set up to help him with hospital fees for vital medical treatments. Popcorn Frights will also be...

Momentum Pictures has landed the North American rights to queer horror movie Swallowed from writer-director Carter Smith.
Swallowed is set in a remote township on the border between Maine and Canada and, according to the project’s description, “is a story about friendship and the extremes we are willing to endure to protect the ones we love. Dripping with blood and pus, its queer body horror told in the grindhouse tradition – with all the naked flesh and shocking violations of a classic midnight movie.”
Momentum Pictures is targeting a Feb. 14, 2023 release.
Cooper Koch, Jena Malone, Mark Patton, and newcomer Jose Colon star in the movie that was produced by Smith, Noah Lang, Helio Campos and Ross O’Connor. Josh Senior and Evan Buxbaum executive produced.

Mark Patton, who of course starred as Jesse Walsh in A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge and more recently told his life story in the documentary Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street, is currently in the hospital amidst a health scare, Bloody Disgusting has learned, with an official Go Fund Me underway to help get him the treatment he needs.
Patton’s manager Peter Valderrama explains, “[Mark] has been ill for quite some time now- originally it was thought to be aftershocks of covid and some hefty infections that could potentially be tackled with care and rest. But now it is quite clearly AIDS related ailments that he is managing.”
Valderrama continues, “Mark is currently in a Mexican hospital where they speak very little English- and they are completely overcome with covid cases there. He needs to be transported to an American hospital down there where he...

Mark Patton, the star of 1985 horror film “Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge,” is hospitalized in Mexico and is asking for the public’s help with his medical costs.
His manager Peter Valderrama set up a GoFundMe account that so far has raised more than 5,000 of the desired 18,000 goal. Patton, who is a regular at horror conventions, has had to cancel recent appearances, Valderrama noted. “Mark was truly looking forward to this show for quite some time ,but sadly his health has taken a drastic turn for the worse.”
Valderrama said that Patton has “been ill for quite some time now,” from what was originally thought to be effects of Covid. “But now it is quite clearly Aid-related ailments that he is managing. Horror has always been a genre for women. In her seminal work "Men, Women, and Chain Saws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film," Carol J. Clover explores the female characters in horror films as well as their impact on traditionally accepted gender norms. Research from the Geena Davis Institute shows that watching strong female protagonists in horror films can help empower women in their own careers. The essay that opens Clover's book is known for coining the term "final girl," the last, usually female, protagonist left alive in a slasher film.
Another beloved genre trope is the "scream queen." An actress known for her lung capacity, the Cambridge Dictionary defines this archetype as "a female actor who plays a main character in a horror movie who gets frightened or attacked." Fay Wray is often named as the first scream queen with many noting her work in the 1933 film "King Kong,...

Warning: The below article contains spoilers for "Halloween Ends."
"Halloween Ends" is finally here. Fans are already taking to their keyboards to debate their conflicting takes on what feels like the most divisive film entry in the franchise since "Halloween III: Season of the Witch." The film takes some big swings and plays with genre expectations, sidelining Michael Myers (James Jude Courtney) to focus on his apprentice-copycat killer, Corey Cunningham (Rohan Campbell). There are themes of evil infecting Corey and the town, and intriguing supernatural elements teased but left purposefully vague. Will this final chapter earn cult classic status over time or remain a source of fan outrage? Only time will tell. Whether you loved this movie or were disappointed and looking for something to hit the reset button, we've got ten killer slashers you should check out next.

I've loved scary movies since I was a little gay boy growing up in Arizona. I saw my very first at four years old when my babysitter slipped a TV-taped copy of Poltergeist into our VHS player. My mom was horrified when she got home, but not me:
I was Horror-fied.
From old-school classics like Psycho to creature feature camp like Critters to more recent gems like Ti West's X and Bodies Bodies Bodies, I consume all things horror like it's, well, The Stuff (my all-time favorite B-Horror).
Over the years, I've thought a lot about Why horror is my favorite genre. What is it about these films that make me so damn giddy? Why do they make me simultaneously scream, laugh, jump, and clap for the bad guy? Well, I now have a theory.
This past summer, I took in the eclectic crowd at Monsterpalooza, a biannual horror convention in Pasadena,...

Benjamin (Cooper Koch) and Dom (Jose Colon) have been best friends since they were kids – and Benjamin has been in love with Dom for almost that long. But Benjamin is heading to sunny Los Angeles for a blazing bright future in gay porn. Fearing the worst for his friend in the cutthroat world of the porn industry, Dom concocts a plan to make Benjamin some quick cash. All they have to do is a quick drug run across the border. ’00s teenagers and fans of particularly gnarly horror will remember The Ruins fondly; a rare, hyper-gory post-Saw squirm-a-thon that’s only won more fans in the years since its first bow. Director and photographer Carter Smith’s latest however – only his second feature since that cult debut in 2006 – is a completely different animal entirely. A thinner, cheaper, queerer and potentially more interesting thriller that shifts both gears, and genres, throughout.
Up front, Swallowed is a thin-on-the-ground drug story; starry-eyed Benjamin (Cooper Koch) is on the verge of a big move to LA to chase fame as a porn star. But his final night with boyfriend Dom (Jose Colon) goes off the rails, when a get rich quick scheme leaves them both choking down baggies full of mysterious powder to smuggle across the US-Canadian border – a move that goes from bad to body horror when a bag splits and an already...

Horror movie sets can be the happiest places on earth, where air-powered cannons paint fake blood murals and human torsos can bite. At other times, a setback in the VFX department can cause delays and tension on the set. That's how a prosthetic tongue threatened to derail a scene in Jack Sholder's 1985 slasher sequel, "A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge."
"Freddy's Revenge" picks up half a decade after the events of "A Nightmare on Elm Street," with new occupants in Nancy Thompson's old home. Among the incoming Walsh family are patriarch Ken, wife Cheryl, daughter Angela (a decades-long fixture on "Days of Our Lives"), and teenage son Jesse, played by Mark Patton.
Naturally, the sequel also brought back dream manipulator Freddy Krueger, with Robert Englund reprising the role of the kid-killer. Freddy has a habit of ruining any good moment, and he does so in "Nightmare 2" by...

Dom has a plan to send Benjamin off with a pocketful of cash — all they have to do is deliver a package across the border. But things spiral wildly out of control when the package turns out to be something far more dangerous than they could have ever imagined.
“Swallowed” has played at the Overlook Film Festival and Fantasia, and is due to play at Arrow Video FrightFest and Fantastic Fest. The film stars Jena Malone (“The Neon Demon”), Cooper Koch (“They/Them”), Mark Patton (A Nightmare on Elm Street 2) and debutant Jose Colon.

Filmmaker Carter Smith started his career doing fashion photography before successfully making the switch to directing horror films. Smith is known for the body horror driven film The Ruins (2008) as well as Jamie Marks is Dead (2014). Written and directed by Carter, his new film Swallowed premiered at this year’s Fantasia Film Festival and brilliantly showcases cringe-inducing body horror by utilizing creepy crawly effects, a standout cast, and an intriguing story. By far, the highlight of Swallowed is an emotional and magnetic performance from Cooper Koch.
Koch stars as Benjamin, a gay, aspiring porn actor who is about to move to Los Angeles. He is spending his last night at home out drinking and dancing with his best friend Dom, played by Jose Colon. "You don't want them hatching in there, okay?" Oh hell no. An early promo trailer has debuted for an indie horror thriller titled Swallowed, the latest from filmmaker Carter Smith. Not to be confused with the other body horror film Swallow, with Haley Bennett, this one is a bit different. The film follows two best friends on their final night together in a small town, with a nightmare of drugs, bugs and horrific intimacy. Oh boy, this sounds gross. "Dripping with blood and pus, Swallowed is queer body horror with all the naked flesh and shocking violations of a classic midnight movie." I definitely don't want to know what's in those drug packets that are actually egg sacs. Eww. Starring Jena Malone, Mark Patton, Cooper Koch, and Jose Colon. The film is premiering at a few genre festivals this summer, hence the teaser before it debuts. Enjoy. Here's the promo...
