Thanks to the runaway success of The Blair Witch Project in 1999, found footage movies quickly became the hottest thing in horror. By relying on camcorders, surveillance footage, and other unlikely camera sources, filmmakers could not only add some verisimilitude to their stories but could also do it on the cheap. But just as quickly, found footage became the most hated subgenre, as fans and critics decried its rigid constraints, laughing at the ridiculous ways characters justified recording when they should be running.
Just as the subgenre died, a new and more relevant approach emerged: desktop movies taking place entirely on computer screens, using webcams, streaming video, and recordings to tell their stories. Not only do desktop movies offer more variety in visual style, but they also better reflect our actual lives, as we spend a lot of time staring at computer and phone screens.

Vegan stars and influencers Evanna Lynch, Mya, Daniella Monet, Harley Quinn Smith, Cammie Scott, Yovana Mendoza, Jenné Claiborne, and Renee Olstead have teamed up with PETA and Meg and Komie Vora of Los Angeles womenswear brand Delikate Rayne for a new vegan fashion campaign that urges both consumers and businesses to consider the animals who are exploited and killed for fashion — and change the game.
The campaign features a new video in which the women share the reasons why they choose vegan leather, faux fur, wool-free knits, and other animal-friendly fabrics — and why they encourage their combined 8 million followers to do the same. The campaign also includes a limited-edition PETA x Delikate Rayne faux-suede cap, 20 percent of the proceeds of which will go toward PETA’s lifesaving work for animals.
R&B singer Mýa says, “The true test of any nation is how it treats its innocent beings, and animals obviously fall into the category.

A zombie by any other name would smell as sweet as “Feral,” which is to say, pretty gamy — not to mention pretty familiar, as genre fare goes. Mark H. Young’s indie feature is a competent horror thriller that ultimately doesn’t sport enough inspiration, in ideas or execution, to make for anything more than an Ok but forgettable night’s rental. It opens a limited L.A. theatrical engagement simultaneous with on-demand launch this Friday.
A sextet of mostly med school students are on a camping weekend to celebrate recent graduation. They’re all paired off: Nice guy Matt (George Finn) with equally sweet-natured Brie (Renee Olstead); her best friend Alice (Scout Taylor-Compton) with new squeeze Jules (Olivia Luccardi); and somewhat noxious alpha male Jesse (Brock Kelly), who has brought along his own new arm-candy Gina (Landry Allbright) but is clearly put out that ex-girlfriend Alice left him — for a woman,...

"You don't understand what's coming... you have no idea." IFC Midnight has released an official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Feral, from horror director Mark Young. The film is about a group of students who fight to survive a weekend in the woods when they suddenly start falling prey to a horrifying virus that turns them into rabid, rampaging cannibal-zombies. The script for this film is co-written by Adam Frazier, who also writes reviews for the site. Feral stars Scout Taylor-Compton, Olivia Luccardi, Lew Temple, Renee Olstead, Brock Kelly, Landry Allbright and George Finn. This looks freaky and cool, almost like a fun mashup between Evil Dead and It Comes at Night and a few other forest horror films. Watch out. Here's the new official trailer (+ posters) for Mark Young's Feral, direct from YouTube: Your best friend has just been infected with a horrifying virus that will...

It would be hard enough to survive a zombie infection, but it would be even harder if you were in the wilderness with your friends when they got infected. This eerie, isolated predicament is explored in the new horror film Feral and we have a look at the movie's poster and trailer ahead of its release from IFC Midnight.
Directed by Mark H. Young, Feral stars Scout Taylor-Compton, Lew Temple, Olivia Luccardi, Renee Olstead, Brock Kelly, Landry Allbright, and George Finn. IFC Midnight will release Feral in theaters and on VOD beginning May 25th.
"Your best friend has just been infected with a horrifying virus that will soon turn her into a rabid, rampaging cannibal-zombie. Do you: a) try to save her? or b) kill her before she kills you? That’s the nightmarish scenario six students find themselves facing when their celebratory camping trip goes terrifyingly wrong. One by one,...

We return to the 2015 horror Unfriended, and how it and other films explore the dark side of social media...
Nb: The following contains spoilers for Unfriended
Unfriended is one of those horror films that becomes less effective the noisier it becomes. Released across America by Universal last year, the film's a twist on the old teen-slasher format, so of course there’s lots of screaming, stalking and violent death. But these scenes of bloody pay-off are a distraction from Unfriended’s quieter moments - for its here the movie's true power lurks.
At a time when the found-footage genre is in desperate need of reinvention, Unfriended finds an ingenious twist on the old first-person, shaky-cam sub-genre. The entire movie takes place on the flickering laptop screen of its protagonist, Blaire (Shelley Hennig). We’re subjected to an initially dizzying array of opening and closing windows, as Blaire...

Chicago – Different isn’t bad and might be great, but you’d better have an irrefutable reason to change what was never broken. Campy being the only word to accurately convey this alternate-reality version of Sherlock Holmes with an original script, writer Greg Kramer and director Andrew Shaver try too hard to be different without ever figuring out why.

People often feel the need to glamorize themselves online so that they can convince not only everyone they are connected with, but also themselves, that their lives are better than they actually are. They wrongfully don’t think about the consequences of their actions as they try to showcase the most attractive aspects of their lives in the process. But everyone, especially those vulnerable teens who feel as they need constant validation to feel worthy and appreciated, needs to realize that it’s not smart to compare themselves to anyone else, particularly online. Forced into a sordid “game,” the teens try to figure out who is behind the mysterious threat, but all signs...

Unfriended is a horror film set entirely on someone's social media feeds that unfolds solely on one laptop screen. Whatever next? Attack of the Killer Emojis? Nightmare on Elm Street: Meme Warriors?
Such presumptuous cynicism about a film best described as 'streaming footage' is understandable given the abundance of abysmal 'found footage' horror flicks in recent times. Yet these fears are quashed by the skillful execution of a surprisingly fresh storytelling form. For Unfriended is innovative, scary and smart, capturing the neuroses and pressures on today's youth within the claustrophobic confines of the digital age. It does for Skype what The Blair Witch Project did for forests.

Computers have become an integral part of our lives, but movies still haven’t come up with an interesting way of depicting their use. The character hunched over his or her laptop has replaced the character poking away at a typewriter as the dullest “action” that can happen in a movie. Writer Nelson Greaves and director Levan Gabriadze light upon an innovative, if obvious, solution to the problem in the cyber-horror flick Unfriended: their movie is one 80-minute shot of the protagonist’s computer screen. The computer is no longer just an aid to the plot; it is the medium through which not only the characters, but the audience, experience the plot.
Unfriended follows a group of high-school friends as they participate in a Skype chat over the course of a night. As far as horror archetypes are concerned, the gang’s all here. We’ve got Adam (Will Peltz...

USA, 2014
Unfriended is the most ingenuous ‘contained thriller’ to come along in some time. Sadly, it doesn’t work nearly as well as a horror film, relying on the same tired jump scares to punctuate its well-constructed suspense. Director Levan Gabriadze makes everything refreshingly barebones and tech-savvy for maximum realism. The timely nature of its subject matter, cyber-bullying, and its clever premise keep Unfriended entertaining, even if we don’t logoff completely satisfied.
One year ago, High School junior Laura Barns (Heather Sossaman) killed herself after an embarrassing YouTube video resulted in relentless hazing. Now, on the anniversary of her death, six of her friends are terrorized during a Skype chat by a malicious browser claiming to be Laura. If any of them logoff without Laura’s permission, they all die. It’s an elegant premise, but can it sustain our attention for 80 minutes?...

Face to Face: Gabriadze’s Topical Mutation of Technological Terror
How effectively chilling it is may be arguable. But there’s no denying that Levan Gabriadze’s English language debut Unfriended manages to be clever and somewhat topically meaningful in the age of cyberbullying on social media apps that have chained humans unwittingly to being constantly recorded, in some sense, at nearly every waking moment. Produced by Timur Bekmambetov, the film premiered as Cybernatural (too kitschy for the cool kids) at the 2014 Fantasia Film Festival, its fascination with and deliberate technological framing manage to meld found-footage aesthetics with the attention span of the real-time generation. Screenwriter Nelson Greave’s plot feels kind of similar to Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s creepy 2001 internet ghost film Pulse (which got a Us redo in 2006), but manages to keep an adept, impressive focus on all the action taking place from the perspective of one character’s home screen.

"Unfriended" is a very silly film. "Unfriended" is also a very clever film. For a very silly film. And that combination of clever and silly will most likely make "Unfriended" a small sensation of sorts among the audience it is clearly chasing. It made me laugh when a group of teens paused mid-conversation to explain to one another what a "troll" is, because every person in that conversation would 100% already know that word. It's clearly a nod to the idea that my parents might see "Unfriended," and they wouldn't know, so someone has to explain it. The makers of "Unfriended" shouldn't worry, though, because there's little or no chance my parents would ever see this movie. While this is being released by a studio, it's actually a pick-up, an independent film that started life on the festival circuit with the title "Cybernatural." Director Levan Gabriadze and writer Nelson Greaves were...

The internet has completely changed everything in our world. More than just providing us online shopping and quick research capabilities, it has altered the way we communicate with one another – both in terms of social media applications and general attitude. This is an incredibly important element in the new high-concept horror film Unfriended, which just premiered at SXSW, and while the movie isn’t by any means a game-changer for the genre, it does do a rather surprising job creating terror and scares from the most basic elements of the internet age. Unfolding its entire story on the screen of a single computer monitor of a girl named Blaire (Shelly Hennig), the film finds it’s protagonist with a group of friends (Moses Jacob Storm, Renee Olstead, Courtney Halverson, Matthew Bohrerr, Jacob Wysocki) chatting on Skype on the anniversary of the death of one of their high ...

This April revenge comes online in the new cyber-slasher film Unfriended. MTV launched the new trailer for the horror film recently (see above). And now, thanks to Universal Studios, the film finally has an official release date set for April 17, 2015.
Unfriended, you may recall, was originally called Cybernatural as it made its way through the genre festival circuit. The death-by-Skype tale of a group of friends being stalked online on the anniversary of their clasmate’s death looks to breath new life into the found footage genre and give everyone a reason to stay offline in the near future. For my money, this looks intriguing enough to give a look as something that could be a bit more enjoyable than the latest offerings in the field (I’m looking at you endless Paranormal Activity films).

“Online, your memories last forever… but so do your mistakes.” The deceptive safety of the screen between teens and the online world is shattered when a malevolent entity crashes a Skype session between six high school friends, forcing them to commit gruesome, self-inflicted acts of violence in front of the computer camera. Going viral gets vicious in Unfriended, as shown in the film’s newly released trailer and poster.
