Julie Vasquez Nunis was born in Carlsbad, NM. Her paternal grandfather, Ignacio Gomez Vasquez, was a farmer of cotton and hay in Carlsbad, New Mexico. Her maternal lineage includes the Doyle Brothers from Brady, Texas who were known to run with Jesse James. In 1971 her parents, Alfred Vasquez and Anita Briscoe left farming life and entered the travel industry in Albuquerque, working for Continental Airlines. Julie graduated from Eldorado High School in 1984 and holds a BFA in Drama from the University of Texas at Austin. In 2000 she studied Clown, Movement and Shakespeare at NYC's The Actor's Center. Upon moving to Los Angeles, Julie was a tour guide at Universal Studios Hollywood and then worked on the desk of Broadway Producer, Joan Stein during the run of Steve Martin's play, Picasso at the Lapin Agile. Her 1999 internship in the office of the Sundance Film Festival laid the foundation for her future position as Co-Director of the Sunscreen Film Festival West from 2013-2022 where she received hands on experience in producing and also directed her first short film, the documentary Jazz v. Punk: Hermosa Beach. She is proud to have volunteered for the non-profit movement #coffeetothefrontlines during the pandemic. Her husband, Mark Nunis, and their two daughters are descendants of artist Georgia O'Keeffe.
