Rutger Hauer and Ridley Scott only made one film together, the 1982 classic Blade Runner – but Hauer went on to make two more movies that were scripted by Blade Runner screenwriter David Webb Peoples; the 1985 medieval fantasy film Ladyhawke (where Peoples went uncredited) and the apocalyptic 1989 film The Blood of Heroes, which Peoples also directed. Now War Is Hell: Making Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth and Soldier: From Script to Screen author Danny Stewart has dug into the making of The Blood of Heroes with his new book Saluting The Blood of Heroes: Behind the Apocalyptic Film, and copies are available for purchase on Amazon!
Also known as The Salute of the Jugger, The Blood of Heroes has the following synopsis: In a future where most of mankind and technology is wiped out, six people travel from place to place playing a brutal form of football with a dog skull.

It can feel that Robert Clouse must have made a faustian pact back when he helmed “Enter the Dragon”. For all of that film's iconic success, he seemed doomed to be forever searching to recapture it to slowly diminishing returns. From “Game of Death” to “The Battle Creek Brawl”, Golden Harvest would return to him frequently when co-producing stateside. So it was no surprise in 1990 that they would hire him one last time. Eureka Entertainment brings those final features to blu ray and once again Cynthia Rothrock throws down in “China O'Brien”.

Take it outside, Jake Gyllenhaal — there was already a “Road House 2.” And it was awful.
The Og “Road House” starring Patrick Swayze came out in 1989 and made $30 million at the box office — a nice return on investment back in the day. Naturally, MGM struck while the iron was hot: a scant 17 years later, the studio released a straight-to-dvd sequel, “Road House 2: Last Call” (2006). Exactly 17 more years later, I went straight to Vudu to buy it. I did not get a good Roi on my $9.99.
Look, I knew what I was getting into. Like you, I didn’t realize there was a “Road House 2” until Doug Liman made a “Road House 3.”
Still the only “Road House” to get a theatrical release, the Swayze flick ended up doing most of its damage on home entertainment. The film isn’t well-reviewed — it has a 41 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 36 on...

Throwback martial arts action film The Last Kumite heads to streaming in 2024, and here’s the trailer.
There is no question that the 1980s was a vintage time for action films, particularly in Hong Kong. There was a fruitful period in the mid 1980s when Hong Kong directors would hire American martial artists to go toe to toe with onscreen, both to broaden the international appeal and show a wide range of styles.
From Cynthia Rothrock going up against Sammo Hung in Shanghai Express to Richard Norton’s multiple bust ups with Jackie Chan in the likes of City Hunter and Mr Nice Guy, these performers went on to headline a series of low budget American action films that have since gained a cult following, perhaps most notably the China O’Brien series and the numerous No Retreat, No Surrender sequels

"It's time!" Capelight Pictures has unveiled a first look teaser for an upcoming 80s / 90s throwback movie called The Last Kumite, directed by filmmaker Ross W. Clarkson. This indie project has been funded on both Kickstarter and Indiegogo, being readied for release in 2024. It's going direct-to-vod in the spring. The Last Kumite is a new spin on the great martial arts films of the 80s & 90s that are still loved amongst action film fans as much today as they were decades ago. The filmmakers describe it as "a new take on the tournament movie inspired by the likes of Bloodsport, Kickboxer and No Retreat No Surrender." Following a martial arts fighter who discovers other martial artists have also been "forced to fight to save their loved ones." Starring newcomer Mathis Landwehr as Michael in the lead role, with a massive throwback cast including Cynthia Rothrock, Michel Qissi, Matthias Hues, Richard Norton,...

Starting his career in an uncredited role in as a henchman in the Dean Martin/ Matt Helm movie The Wrecking Crew, Chuck Norris really burst onto the scene fighting Bruce Lee in a Roman Coliseum in The Way of the Dragon. Since then, Chuck Norris has had a career filled with action scenes, loud guns, and roundhouse kicks. He was a mainstay of 1980s action films and was even brought in as a sort of savior for the others in The Expendables 2. While he’s mostly retired now, everyone still knows who he is, and Chuck Norris jokes have honored him for years. After a solid deep dive of the man’s movies, here are what we consider the best Chuck Norris movies:
The Octagon (1980)
Starting off a decade of plenty for Mr. Norris, The Octagon is one of those films that feels very much like he owns it.

Also known as The Lady Dragon, Cynthia Rothrock first started acting in Hong Kong films in the 1980s following a very successful career as a competition martial artist. She holds 5 black belts and is ranked 8th Dan Grandmaster. She competed against men for a good part of her competition days due to there not always being a women’s category, where she won many times over. Her achievement in the martial arts world got her the first female cover of Karate Illustrated and her film career is filled with action and a bit of humor. Here are 5 of the best Cynthia Rothrock movies:
Yes, Madam (1985)
Her very first movie role, the part of Inspector Carrie Moss was designed for Rothrock and her skills, or so it would seem while watching the film. Directed by Corey Yuen and co-starring Michelle Yeoh, a woman who needs no introduction at this point, the...

“Pain don’t hurt” is one of the many bits of cheesy dialogue from Road House, and it’s a perfect example of why this film is now regarded as a cult classic. Dalton (Patrick Swayze) blurts it to Doc (Kelly Lynch) as she’s stapling shut his knife wound. Dalton refuses anesthesia with that cool, ridiculous pick-up line, and it’s not long afterwards that he beds Doc because who could even resist that?
Road House came out in 1989 and earned 30 million at the box office from a budget of 15 million, according to Variety. But like so many cult films of the era, it found new life on the small screen. In 2020, Road House was named the most-played movie on basic cable, beating out Jumanji, Gladiator, and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective which placed second, third, and fourth respectively.

When “Mad Max Fury Road” was released back in 2015, its two stars, Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy, admitted that they were at each other’s throats during filming. Now, new details are surfacing in a new book about just how ugly it got between the two of them.
New York Times pop culture reporter Kyle Buchanan spoke with over 100 cast and crew members who worked on George Miller’s Oscar-winning blockbuster to write the new oral history book “Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road.” In the film, Theron plays Imperator Furiosa, a post-apocalyptic warrior who betrays her tyrannical leader Immortan Joe to save the young women he keeps as breeders.
But her escape plan takes an unexpected turn when she encounters Max Rockatansky (Hardy), forcing them to work together despite their initial distrust to escape Immortan Joe’s clutches.

Do you remember sitting down in the holidays and watching on television one of those all start cast epics such as “Around the World in 80 Days” that frequented Hollywood in the 1960’s. Well now imagine that with a cast of Hong Kong’s finest from the 1980’s and throw in a lot of martial arts amidst the comedy. Now imagine it in the style of a western-only set in the Orient. Sammo Hung certainly liked variety in his directorial career and at his creative peak in the late 1980’s, came up with this polar opposite to the more vicious war epic “Eastern Condors”. A more family friendly, action filled entertainer that throws everything into the mix and finds most of it sticking.

Building up on the success of the two previous installments, Sammo Hung and producer Eric Tsang really went overboard with this one, which this time, takes place mostly in Pattaya, Thailand and features even more explosive (literally and metaphorically) action scenes. The most impressive fact, however, about the film, is its uncanny cast, which seems to feature the majority of the creme de la creme of Hk action cinema, to say the least. Apart from the two aforementioned and the foreigners Richard Norton and Yasuaki Kurata, who form the main villain trio with Fat Chung, the movie also includes Jackie Chan, Yuen Biao, Richard Ng, Kiu Wai Mai, Stanley Fung, Sibelle Hu, John Sham, Rosamund Kwan, Andy Lau, Kara Hui, Michelle Yeoh and Charlie Chin, while in non-named credits as thugs, we stumble upon Dick Wei, Philip Ko and Lau Kar-win, to name the ones with the most significant roles.

Kurt Thomas, a breakthrough American Olympic gymnast, has died at the age of 64 due to a stroke, which occurred on May 24, caused by a tear in the basilar artery in his brain stem, according to the Associated Press. While Thomas’s legacy will undoubtedly be defined by gold medal wins, connoisseurs of campy action films best remember him from his high-flying starring role in 1985 cult classic Gymkata.
Thomas was an initially a multi-sport athlete with accomplishments on the basketball courts, having led the Indiana State Sycamores to an Ncaa team title in 1977. However, he rose to fame in the late-1970s, hitting the talk show circuit as a bellwether star in men’s gymnastics, a category that had been mostly associated with its women’s division. After having competed in the 1976 Montreal Olympics, Thomas broke big in the 1978 Strasbourg, France World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, in which he became the first U.

It is always a pleasure to watch documentaries about the golden age of Hk action cinema and Serge Ou provides a very entertaining, if somewhat rushed exploration of the whole concept, in a style that matches the speed of those movies.
In that fashion, the movie begins with Run Run Shaw and the Shaw Brothers Empire, which is proclaimed as “The Death Star of Hong Kong movie studios”, due to its hoarding of actors, stages and equipment. Through a number of interviews with people such as Cheng Pei Pei and Wilson Yip, whose names barely stay on screen, the documentary deals with all aspects and stories of the era, from the way they implemented the sound, to the choreographies that were inspired from the Chinese opera, to the music. The way directors like Chang Cheh and Lau Kar Leung reinvigorated, changed and eventually shaped the genre is presented next. The...

In an era where the anime/manga adaptations were much less in frequency and quality, the live-action edition of “City Hunter” was one of the most accomplished, particularly due to the combination of Wong Jing as director and Jackie Chan as protagonist, both of which could be characterized as the embodiments of the action comedy, that is the main genre of the franchise.
Ryo Saeba and his assistant Kaori Makimura (who is in love with him and has to put up with his constant womanizing and lazyness) are assigned to locate Shizuko Imamura, the runaway daughter of the CEO of a prominent Japanese newspaper. After a fight that ends up with Kaori abandoning him, Ryo finds himself on Shizuko’s heels aboard a leisure ship, which, unfortunately for both of them, is under attack by an international crime syndicate headed by “Don Mac” who wants to kidnap the passengers.

'Mad Max: Fury Road' poster with Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky 'Mad Max: Fury Road' review: 'A good movie on its own terms' Mad Max, the first feature film of director George Miller and the second for the then 23-year-old Mel Gibson, premiered in North America in Feb. 1980. I was 17 years old, crazy about cars and revenge movies, and generally ripe for the picking. Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, followed in 1981, deepening devotees' affection for the character and his car. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985), was the third film in the series and was equally anticipated, though it has worn over time. It co-starred the Silent Dancer herself, Tina Turner, and her current hit of the day, the name of which I cannot remember and don't want to look.* I saw each of them at the time of its respective North American release and relished in them all. After years of delays, false starts, casting shifts and weather chaos, George Miller seems finally set to gun the engine on Mad Max: Fury Road. And someone new will be heading to Namibia to shoot next month (assuming it really goes ahead this time), with Rosie Huntington-Whiteley aboard. The model-turned-actress (stop rolling your eyes at that last part) got her start gawking at / running away from giant robots in Transformers: Dark Of The Moon, and while we doubt she’ll be called upon to do too much heavy lifting, acting-wise (when you have Oscar winner Charlize Theron as your female lead, you’re sorted), she’s playing one of the Five Wives, part of a convoy of women being chased down by the villains of the piece before Tom Hardy’s Max helps out. Or at least that’s probably what happens – plot details are still largely secret as of right now.

Cool! 56 year old Cynthia Rothrock is back! Rothrock was the undefeated middleweight Kickboxing/Weapons lady champion for five consecutive years and starred in a boatload of Dtv action adventures in the ’80s and ’90s. She has not been in a film since 2004′s Sci-fighter but she’s making a comeback in Double Fury, to be filmed this summer, and I’m kinda jazzed!
Here are the details:
SaintSinner Entertainment (www.saintsinnerent.com) along with Jaunted Productions (www.jauntedproductions.com) is currently in pre-production for a martial arts action film that’ll shoot this summer titled Double Fury.
The film was written and will be directed by Amel J. Figueroa, and stars veteran martial arts action stars Richard Norton (Mr. Nice Guy) and Cynthia Rothrock (China O’Brien), as well as rising stars Cyrus Samson (Night of the Living Dead – 2012), Dennis Ronin (The Sickness), Natalie Amenula (Hamlet 2), Cynthia Housel (Iniquity...

Independent film company SaintSinner Entertainment, along with Jaunted Productions are currently in pre-production on a new martial arts action film that’ll shoot this summer titled Double Fury. And I’m excited to see the finished product already!
Why? Well the film, which is written and directed by Amel J. Figueroa (The Quiet Ones) sees veteran martial arts action stars (and my favourite on screen pairing) Richard Norton and Cynthia Rothrock re-teaming once again for the film which follows two estranged brothers brought back together after their father is murdered by a megalomaniacal madman who’s looking for a volatile package in one of their possession that could destroy all that they hold dear.
Double Fury also features a number of rising stars Cyrus Samson (Night of the Living Dead – 2012), Dennis Ronin (The Sickness), Natalie Amenula (Hamlet 2), Cynthia Housel (Iniquity), Rommel Gargoles (Black Ninja) and Laura Lynn Cottrel (The Replacements...

9.45am: Welcome to today's live updates on the still-unfolding repercussions of the phone hacking scandal. Following yesterday's Commons statement and debate, the house in now in recess. Rupert Murdoch has left the UK following his testimony to MPs on Tuesday.
So, on the face of it today could appear a slight respite following an almost absurdly dramatic fortnight. A majority of English daily papers – five against four – lead on other stories, including the unfolding crisis in the eurozone.
But rest assured there will be more to come. Nick Clegg is scheduled to give an end-of-term press conference imminently. Perhaps someone could ask why he looked so detached – disinterested, even – during David Cameron's phone hacking statement. There is also surely...

Cannon Films, like any other studio yesterday or today, wanted to keep a good thing going, and for them in the 1980s it was the ninja movie. After two early successes for the studio in Enter the Ninja and Revenge of the Ninja (recall this film’s flashback here), success wasn’t guaranteed a third time in their Ninja III: The Domination. The studio took a break, as did director Sam Firstenberg, but in 1984 the studio wanted to revisit the genre, but with a twist. The deadliest art of the Orient is now in the hands of an American.
Killer Film catches back up with director Sam Firstenberg for an Action Packed Flashback for 1985′s American Ninja.
After the lukewarm reception to Ninja III: The Domination both critically and financially, Sam took a break from the genre with Breakin’ 2. “It was the company’s decision to keep the Ninja series alive,...

While other savvy web-oriented reviewers are spending their oh-so precious moments viewing critically-acclaimed, life-affirming, award-winning motion pictures in exquisite art house theaters around the globe, I prefer to expend my lazy days off watching profoundly awful martial arts movies in my underwear. Director David Worth’s 1992 fisticuff extravaganza “Lady Dragon”, for example, is just another notch on my diseased cinematic bedpost, a wholly forgettable yarn about one woman’s quest to avenge her charming husband’s untimely death. The lady with the lethal limbs, of course, is none other than Cynthia Rothrock, star of such outstanding cinematic disasters as “China O’Brien”, “Undefeatable”, and the legendary Corey Haim caper franchise “Fast Getaway”. The only reason anyone would bother to partake in this obscure serving of generic foolishness is to witness the climatic showdown betwixt the aforementioned Rothrock and fluid Australian brawler Richard Norton. Unfortunately, “Kickboxer” mastermind David Worth has seemingly...

Australian actor, martial-arts expert and stuntman Richard Norton has joined the cast of George Miller's "Mad Max Fury Road," joining Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron. Now in an interview, Norton confirmed his casting and revealed details about the villain. "We were meant to be filming right now but they postponed it for a January 2012 start," he said. "I'm really looking forward to this because I'm playing a number of roles, including the main henchman to the bad guy played by Hugh Keays-Byrne who was in the original 'Mad Max' over 30 years ago." Keays-Byrne was set to play Martian Manhunter in Miller's now-dead "Justice League" movie, but is now the villain in "Mad Max 4." Norton is also working on "The Amazing Spider-Man," stating that the film has a $220 million budget.

Sin City and Batman Begins in 2005 saw the mighty Rutger Hauer return to roles in high profile genre films. He has been working solidly of course, but these day's one might forget just what a genre film powerhouse the Dutchman was, during a period spanning about 15 years, from the early 80's to the mid nineties. Of course Hauer’s quintessential role is that of Roy Batty, the replicant on the run who races against time to find his creator. While avoiding the Blade Runner Rick Deckard played by Harrison Ford. Probably his second most recognizable role is the powerhouse performance as the uber menacing Hitch Hiker John Ryder in the 1986 movie The Hitcher. "John Ryder" as played by Hauer is probably my favorite on screen psycho, as Hauer relies almost entirely on performance to menace both the viewer and his onscreen victim Jim Halsey (C. Thomas Howell) in a movie...
