Their first Sound of Music was a mixed bag quality-wise but a giant ratings hit. Since then they've had two critical and ratings successes (The Wiz and Hairspray) and one failure (Peter Pan). The fifth will be Andrew Lloyd Webber & Tim Rice's rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar. It's made frequent regular appearances on stages all over the world since its debut in 1970. It even had a Golden Globe nominated film version in 1973 directed by Norman Jewison who was, at the time, a very hot commodity having recently made three best picture players: The Russians are Coming! The Russians are Coming! (1966, not a sci-fi time travelling movie about the current Us government), In the Heat of the Night (1967) and the Best Picture nominee Fiddler on the Roof...

Tam Mutu, who is making his Broadway debut as the passionate Doctor and poet Yurii Zhivago, Kelli Barrett Wicked, Tony Award nomineeTom Hewitt Rocky Horror Show, and Paul Nolan Jesus Chris Superstar will be joined by Lora Lee Gayer as Tonia Gromeko, Zhivago's devoted wife, in the new Broadway musical Doctor Zhivago. La Jolla Playhouse previously announced its final production of the 20122013 season Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, a world-premiere musical written and directed by Playhouse Director Emeritus Des McAnuff Jesus Christ Superstar, Jersey Boys, with music and lyrics by The Flaming Lips. According to the Globe and Mail, the musical will be lead by Paul Nolan, who previously played the title role in McAnuff's recent Broadway revival of Jesus Christ Superstar. The show will run in NovemberDecember 2012 dates Tba in the Mandell Weiss Theatre.

The cast for the upcoming revival of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber‘s Jesus Christ Superstar was announced this week. The cast will feature Paul Nolan, Josh Young and Chilina Kennedy reprising their roles as Jesus Christ, Judas Iscariot and Mary Magdalene, respectively. Tom Hewitt will take on the role of Pontius Pilate, with Bruce Dow as King Herod, Marcus Nance as Caiaphas and Aaron Walpole as Annas.

New York — What's the buzz? A hit production of "Jesus Christ Superstar" in Canada is coming south to Broadway.

Producers announced Tuesday that the rock musical about the last days of Jesus written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice will hit New York in the spring, a move that was widely expected.

Previews will begin on March 1 at the Neil Simon Theatre and an official opening is set for March 22. Des McAnuff, the artistic director of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario, where the revival originated this summer, will again direct.

"I'm extremely happy, and very, very happy for the company of actors because I think they anticipated that this might happen and I certainly haven't discouraged them from believing that," McAnuff said by phone from Italy.

The guitar- and keyboard-driven musical, which debuted on Broadway in 1971, includes such songs as "What's the Buzz?" "Superstar" and "I Don't Know How to Love Him.

An Irish racing stable proves illuminating fodder for documentary treatment, writes Andrew Pulver

An entertaining, engaging documentary about an Irish racing stable, which shows that the sport of kings is no longer about top-hatted idlers and flick-knife wielding spivs. Paul Nolan is the central character, a trainer who runs a string of horses at his base in south-east Ireland. We are invited to follow three horses over the course of a year: small but plucky Ardalan, potential world-beater Joncol, and the distinctly troubled Cuan na Graí. It's to director Liz Mermin's credit that each horse emerges as a distinct personality (though the fractured bit of music that signals Cuan na Graí's every appearance gets a tad grating after a while). The tenor of a working racehorse's life is skilfully evoked, and you can't help but feel for Nolan as he tries to strategise his way through the racing season.
