The films in the running for the 2022 Best Visual Effects Oscar are “Dune,” “Free Guy,” “No Time to Die,” “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” Our odds currently indicate that “Dune” (31/10) is the frontrunner, followed in order by “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (4/1), “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” (4/1), “No Time to Die” (9/2), and “Free Guy” (9/2).

Included among the 19 individuals are 12 past nominees, four of whom have triumphed at least once. The seven first-timers are Brian Connor (“Dune”), Nikos Kalaitzidis (“Free Guy”), Sean Noel Walker (“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”), and pairs Joel Green and Charlie Noble (“No Time to Die”) and Scott Edelstein and Chris Waegner (“Spider-Man: No Way Home”).

It has been 42 years since the visual effects craftspeople behind James Bond’s death-defying stunts and action sequences have received Academy Awards recognition. But that changed this year with “No Time To Die,” the blockbuster finale of star Daniel Craig’s tenure as 007. The Cary Jojo Fukunaga film received three total nominations at the 2022 Oscars, including Best Song for Billie Eilish, Best Sound, and Best Visual Effects for Mark Bakowski, Chris Corbould, Jonathan Fawkner, Joel Green, and Charlie Noble.

“The collaboration has been the biggest thing,” Corbould said in a special interview with Craig and stuntman Lee Morrison about working on the franchise. Corbould, an Oscar winner for “Inception,” is a six-time nominee whose history with Bond dates all the way back to 1977’s “The Spy Who Loved Me.” Corbould also worked on “Moonraker,” the last Bond movie nominated for Best Visual Effects.

Denis Villeneuve’s sweeping “Dune” and Disney’s Golden Globe-winning animated musical, “Encanto” each scored six nominations Tuesday to lead the 20th annual Ves Awards nominations (awards ceremony details are in pandemic flux). Marvel’s trippy “Loki,” meanwhile, led the broadcast field with four nominations for the Disney+ series.

Competing for feature visual effects are the frontrunning “Dune,” “Godzilla vs. Kong,” “The Matrix Resurrections,” Daniel Craig’s Bond finale, “No Time to Die,” and Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” All have been shortlisted for the VFX Oscar, with “Dune” as the heavy favorite, in which Dneg supplied windblown sand, raging sandstorms, flying insect-like ornithopters, and the iconic CG sandworms.

The Visual Effects Society unveiled nominations Tuesday for its 20th annual Ves Awards, with Warner Bros’ Dune and Disney’s animated Encanto leading all nominees with six apiece, followed by the Disney+ Marvel series Loki which has four noms to lead all broadcast series.

The group, celebrating its 25th anniversary, recognizes the year’s best in outstanding visual effects artistry and innovation across film, animation, television, commercials and video games. With the Omicron variant surging, the Ves Awards ceremony does not have a date or format yet; those decisions are still to be made and tickets are not yet up for sale.

Last year, the Ves Awards went virtual in a ceremony hosted as per usual by Patton Oswalt. Netflix’s The Midnight Sky, Disney/Pixar’s eventual Animated Feature Oscar winner Soul and Disney+’s The Mandalorian were among the marquee winners.

The Visual Effects Society (Ves) announced the nominees for the 20th Annual Ves Awards, with Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” leading the feature film field with six nominations. Disney’s “Encanto” also landed six nominations and led the animated contenders.

This year marks the Visual Effects Society’s 25th anniversary. Ves recognizes outstanding visual effects artistry and innovation across 25 categories in film, animation, television, commercials and video games, plus the VFX supervisors, producers and hands-on artists who bring the work to life.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, the Ves is still considering the format and timing for this year’s show.

In “No Time to Die,” it was important for director Cary Joji Fukunaga to complete Daniel Craig’s arc as James Bond by tying up all five films. This meant emphasizing the emotional connection to Bond, even during the high-octane action sequences, which impacted the VFX. This included the Aston Martin DB5 gun battle in Matera, the sinking trawler with Bond and Felix Leiter (Jeffrey Wright), and the explosive climax atop the control tower roof of baddie Safin (Rami Malek).

We still don’t have a title for “Bond 25,” but we’ve got a baddie (“Bohemian Rhapsody” Oscar winner Rami Malek), a Bond lady (Ana de Armas from “Blade Runner 2049”), and a premise for Cary Joji Fukunaga to direct. Obviously, it was less than what we were hoping for, as producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli announced the full cast during a live stream event Thursday from author Ian Fleming’s GoldenEye retreat in Jamaica (the spiritual home of the franchise where “Dr. No” and “Live and Let Die” were filmed).

Eschewing the usual Bond launch press conference, they were joined by James Bond star Daniel Craig and Fukunaga, who answered a few fan questions from Twitter. Meanwhile, Malek provided a quip via a video feed from New York about “making sure that Bond doesn’t have an easy ride.”

Stan Lee received the the Lifetime Achievement Award and visual effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull received the George Melies Award. Patton Oswalt hosted the event held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Antonion Banderas, Lou Ferrigno, director Chris Miller, Marc Webb, and Jennifer Yuh Nelson presented awards. But the surprise appearance by Martin Scorsese was the highlight of the evening.

The visual effects that we are seeing in movies these days are absolutely mind blowing. At this point it doesn't seem like there's any excuse for a film to have bad visual effects unless the people hired lack talent, or the studio is keeping the cash in their pockets.

There's a lot of good nomination this year such as Captain America, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean 4, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Out of all of these I think that Planet of the Apes might take home the top prize, those apes were incredibly freaky looking. Weta did an amazing job with this movie, and out of all the other nominations this was the movie I was most impressed by. What are your thoughts?
