- During World War II, he fought in the ill-fated Warsaw Uprising. After the war, he served for a short time in the US Army in occupied Germany, before returning to Poland. When he later attempted to flee Poland, he was arrested and sent to prison. He remained a critic of the Communist regime, which is thought to have cost him leading roles over four decades.
- One of his wives, Diana, was Cuban. They've met while Niemczyk was filming Zejscie do piekla (1966). Another wife, Dorit, was German. He was also married to a Croatian woman.
- His performance in Inland Empire (2006) was filmed soon after Niemczyk learned he had terminal cancer.
- He had a daughter, Monika, with his first wife, Tatiana.
