As thousands of its members remain on strike, the Writers Guild of America West is attempting to organize staffers at MTV’s long-running comedy show devoted to viral Internet videos, Ridiculousness.
On Wednesday, July 12, 11 full-time “creative consultants” (the WGA West did not offer specific job titles but said many had that phrase associated with their roles) on the Rob Dyrdek-hosted show filed a petition for a National Labor Relations Board election in an attempt to organize with the western branch of the writers’ union. According to the union, the staffers initially asked for voluntary recognition from management after a number signed union cards, a request that was denied.
The WGA West said in a statement that the staffers are seeking “parity with their peers in the industry and respect for their work” with the union drive. The union considers Ridiculousness comparable to pre-existing covered projects including America’s Funniest Home Videos and Tosh.0,...

Diaz Close To Settlement with Tabloid
Cameron Diaz is reportedly close to agreeing a settlement in her $30 million lawsuit against an American magazine that accused her of cheating on Justin Timberlake. The National Enquirer last year claimed Diaz was having an affair with Shane Nickerson, the married producer of her MTV show Trippin'. It printed pictures of the pair leave a recording studio and hugging. Diaz immediately sued for slander and libel, accusing the tabloid of turning "an innocent, insignificant and non-memorable occurrence involving two co-workers and friends (into) a sensationalistic, scandalous and accusatory story which was completely false." Nickerson's wife and mother-in-law joined Diaz as co-plaintiffs alleging Enquirer reporters caused them emotional distress. According to court documents revealed by E! Online the parties are close to settlement. A summary of proceedings reads, "Counsel report that settlement discussions have been productive and that parties are close to a settlement."...

Diaz Wins Cheating Libel Case
Hollywood actress Cameron Diaz won her libel lawsuit against British newspaper The Sun Friday, over the publication's claim she had an affair with a married man. The Charlie's Angels beauty has accepted "substantial" damages from The Sun's publisher, News Group Newspapers, over the story written in May. The Sun had claimed Diaz was cheating on her boyfriend Justin Timberlake with MTV producer Shane Nickerson and accompanied their story with a paparazzi picture showing the pair sharing an embrace. But, following an investigation, the newspaper admitted in a statement: "Any suggestion of a romantic involvement is entirely untrue and without any substance whatsoever." Diaz's lawyer Simon Smith told London's High Court, "It was explained to the reader that he was a married man, married to a high school teacher and that he was also the father of a one-year-old daughter," and that, "they have enjoyed more than just a professional relationship". He continued, "The publication of these allegations has caused damage to the claimant's personal and professional reputation, in addition to obvious distress to both herself, Mr. Timberlake, Mr. Nickerson and his wife." News Group Newspapers have settled a financial settlement with Diaz and agreed to cover her legal costs. Smith added, "In those circumstances and in light of this vindication my client is prepared not to proceed any further against The Sun newspaper." News Group Newspapers lawyer Benjamin Beabey argued his client's story was based upon an earlier report in the National Enquirer but added, "It entirely accepts that the allegations are without foundation and ought never to have been published." Diaz is pursuing a separate legal action against American Media Inc.

Cameron Diaz Sues The Enquirer
Cameron Diaz has followed up her threats to sue US tabloid National Enquirer, over an article alleging she was cheating on boyfriend Justin Timberlake, by slamming publishers with a $30 million claim for damages. Attorneys for both Diaz and TV producer Shane Nickerson have filed a joint lawsuit, according to Los Angeles Superior Court documents obtained by US news show Celebrity Justice, which could leave Enquirer bosses with a hefty $60 million bill. The pair, who worked together on MTV travel show Trippin' and claim they were slandered in the front-page May article, accuse the Enquirer of libel and intentional and negligent infliction of emotional stress. The suit seeks at least $60 million in damages - $30 million apiece for Diaz and Nickerson. According to the court documents, the suit claims the published story has not only damaged both of their reputations, but also placed needless strains on their personal relationships. The tabloid ran 25 photos of Diaz and Nickerson - some of which depicted the two hugging - and featured captions insinuating the pair were an item. The piece further accused Diaz and Nickerson of adultery - Nickerson is married. In a statement from Diaz's representatives, released after the article ran, they fumed, "This is a case of a tabloid colluding with the stalkerazzi in an attempt to distort the truth and mislead the public." Diaz's attorneys are expected to file a second lawsuit against British tabloid The Sun, who published the same photos with a similar article.

Diaz Slams Producer Romance Reports
Cameron Diaz has slammed reports she is cheating on long-term lover Justin Timberlake with her travel show producer Shane Nickerson. Witness Oscar Duran told a US magazine he saw Diaz French-kissing Nickerson - who produces the actress' MTV show Trippin' - outside a Santa Monica, California studio last Wednesday. Duran says, "Cameron wrapped her arms around the guy and started kissing him on the mouth. They stood kissing for a good three minutes." Diaz, 32, and Timberlake, 24, will celebrate their two-year anniversary this month, while Nickerson has a one-year-old daughter Lucy with his wife Elisa. British newspaper The Sun reports that, when asked for comment about the alleged smooch, Nickerson replied, "Oh no, I can't talk to you. You'll have to talk to MTV." However the Charlie's Angels beauty's publicist Brad Cafarelli insists, "Shane Nickerson is a friend of Cameron's and a valued associate who works with her on her MTV show. They do not have any sort of romantic relationship whatsoever."...
