Season 2 of Topic’s original TV series Iskander debuts Thursday, Jan. 13, with the entire season 1 also available for streaming starting on that date. The four-episode debut season of Iskander, a crime drama from French TV, delivers a solid mystery in an exotic setting – French Guyana.
In season 1, we meet Chloe (Stephane Caillard), a police officer banished to this post in the remote jungle setting of Cayenne for some unspecified act of insubordination. On her first day, she’s partnered with veteran detective Dialo (Adama Niane), and sent to the site of a gruesome murder. They find a catamaran adrift up river with the bodies of two white do-gooders who were distributing educational materials to isolated villages. She learns many locals resent such seemingly benevolent acts. Those descendants of African slaves the...

Lupin is back, and the search is on for Raoul (Etan Simon). The first part of the popular Netflix French import found professional criminal Assane Diop (Omar Sy) trying to get to the bottom of a crime his father apparently committed against the powerful Pellegrini family. By the end of the season, Assane and Claire (Ludivine Sagnier) were searching desperately for their son Raoul, who had just been kidnapped by the Pellegrini henchman, Leonard (Adama Niane). In a new teaser for part two, which premieres this summer, their search continues, and it looks like Assane and Leonard are about to have a showdown. "If you touch my son, I'll kill you," Assane tells Leonard via phone, while...

This piece contains spoilers for Netflix’s Lupin.
Netflix’s compelling French crime comedy-drama Lupin ended Part 1 on a hell of a cliffhanger. Yes, there’s Assane Diop’s (Omar Sy) son Raoul (Etan Simon) getting snatched by Pellegrini’s cleaner Leonard (Adama Niane) in the Maurice Leblanc-obsessed town of Étretat, though honestly that had been telegraphed throughout “Chapter 5.” The real stunner is when Officer Guedira (Soufiane Guerrab), perhaps the only person whose Lupin fandom rivals Assane’s, tracks down the gentleman thief and addresses him as, “Arsène Lupin?”
And that’s where Part 1 ends, with two adversaries—who might well become allies—finally meeting on the beach while fellow fans in top hats, capes, and monocles venture out to the Hollow Needle, not knowing the potential tragedy that could unfold in Étretat. Where can Lupin go from here?
Thankfully, Netflix has already confirmed that Part 2 will premiere later...

Furie is a French and Belgium feature. This title looks at a family, returning from a holiday. Unfortunately, squatters have take over their home. Furie, also known as Get In or Die Trying (Uhm), has had a run on the film festival circuit, in 2019. Supposedly based on a true story, this feature has begun a home entertainment release in Europe. Directed by Olivier Abbou, this film centrally stars: Adama Niane (Baise-moi), Stéphane Caillard (The Take) and Paul Hamy. A trailer for the film was released in 2019 (found below) and new stills are available here, as well. The trailer is exclusively in French, with French subtitles. Some of the dialogue mentions: "no response on the phone," "squatters," "missing children" and a "plan." This Canadian's French could still use some improvement. However, the trailer does show one family struggling with a difficult situation, while terrorized by a group intent on class warfare.

Frédéric spoke with me about his upcoming project with SK1 producer Julien Madon, how Bertrand Tavernier's L.627 and Henri Verneuil's Mélodie En Sous-Sol (Any Number Can Win), starring Jean Gabin and Alain Delon, play a detective role, finding his Guy Georges, the nature of evil and the response of the inspectors involved in the case when they saw the film.
