Generally speaking, the words "Mischa Barton horror movie" send me running the other way but for whatever reason, I clicked play on the trailer for Tom Nagel's The Toybox and I must admit, I may have judged Barton too soon.

The movie follows an estranged family who takes a family trip to the desert in their Rv. It's supposed to be a bonding trip to get everyone back into talking terms but when they find themselves stranded in the desert, they "soon learn their Rv holds terrible, haunting secrets."

In addition to Barton, the movie also stars Jeff Denton and a nearly unrecognizable Denise Richards.

The first teaser trailer for The Toybox has emerged from the desert. This is the latest horror film from director Tom Nagel (Clowntown, 2017). Somewhat reminiscent of The Hills Have Eyes (2006), a family picks up a couple of hitchhikers, after their vehicle breaks down. In the film, a family is travelling crosscountry, when they break down in the desert. Out in the desert, they find terrible secrets and something that is hunting them. Recently, the film was at the American Film Market, in Santa Monica. The Toybox will be completed this year. And, an early concept poster is hosted here, along with a few behind-the-scenes stills. The roles for the two main actresses have been announced. In the film, Richards will play a mother "stranded with her family in the desert." Meanwhile, Barton will play a "traveler who joins the group and gets caught up in the an otherwodly evil (Uhm)." Matt Mercer (Contracted, 2013), Katie Keene and the director also star. A release date has not been announced for the film.

Los Angeles-based CineTel Films has acquired worldwide rights to supernatural thriller The Toybox and will launch sales in Cannes.

Denise Richards and Mischa Barton star in the tale of a family on a cross-country trip who fall prey to a supernatural force in the desert. Production wrapped in April.

The film also stars Jeff Denton, Brian Nagel, Greg Violand, Matt Mercer, Malika Michelle, David H. Greathouse and Katie Keene.

Tom Nagel directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with Denton.

Jeff Miller, Tom Nagel, Brian Nagel and Denton are producing, while Jim Jacobsen, Eric Brenner, and Ronnie D. Lee serve as executive producers.  

Paul Hertzberg negotiated the deal for CineTel Films with Eric Brenner on behalf of the filmmakers.

What really baffles me about being a critic is indecision. I think when a film is really good, it deserves praise. When a film is really bad, it deserves to be pointed out. But when a film lands in the middle, in the “I’m just not sure how to handle it,” it really bothers me.

Clowntown is the collaboration of first-time feature length director Tom Nagel and Axe Giant: Wrath of Paul Bunyan writer Jeff Miller. This pairing of minds might result in a rather interesting experience, especially when “Bunyan” writer Miller is concerned. I saw “Bunyan” and happened to find it hilarious. So going into this film, I think I had different expectation that the result I got was.

I envisioned with a name like Clowntown a visceral sort of Krampus film that will end up making me laugh and creep me out at the same time.

A group of friends encounter a community of psychopaths in ClownTown, and with ITN Distribution releasing the film in theaters today, and on VOD & DVD October 4th, we had a chance to catch up with director Tom Nagel for our latest Q&A feature.

Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Tom. Coulrophobia—the fear of clowns—is something that a lot of people can relate to. How did you and your creative team set out to portray clowns in your film and make them as scary as possible?

Tom Nagel: In ClownTown, my vision of the clowns was to be something different from what most people are accustomed to. We wanted to come up with something fresh and different, but something that still satisfied the fear of clowns. Directed by Tom Nagel, making his feature film directorial debut, and written by Jeff Miller, the movie is loosely inspired by the costumed men who terrorized Bakersfield, CA in 2014. Starring Brian Nagel, Lauren Elise, Andrew Staton, Katie Keene and Jeff Denton, “ClownTown” centers around a group of friends who get stranded in a seemingly abandoned town and find themselves being stalked by a gang of violent psychopaths dressed as clowns.

Clown films have become increasingly popular this year; Eli Roth produced the horror flick “Clown,” Rob Zombie directed “31” and there’s currently a remake of Stephen King’s “It” on the way.

You can always assume a horror movie’s quality based on how many cardinal genre sins are broken before the credits roll. Tom Nagel’s ClownTown has no trouble racking up the offenses in this particular case, especially because a good eight minutes pass before any title flashes. In that time, a lonely babysitter ignores obvious warning signs, gets naked on camera for no added reason (only two minutes in) and dies a generic, horrid death – three strikes in record time. Sadly, it never gets much better from there, as a town is seemingly taken over by psychotic clowns who rule by Marshall law – because why the hell not? It’s a little The Devil’s Rejects, a bit Psycho and unfortunately way too much of Rob Zombie’s 31. Talk about bad timing…

A couple of years ago news reports surfaced about a California City which was being terrorized by a group of people dressed as clowns. That event, which were likely inspired by horror movies, has now spawned a horror movie of its own: Clowntown.

Directed by actor-turned-director Tom Nagel the plot centers on a group of friends who get stranded in an apparently abandoned town which is actually home to a group of psychopaths who like to dress up as clowns. Needless to say, it makes for some scary images.

Netflix said on Tuesday it will debut Mascots worldwide on October 13 following the comedy’s world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next month.

Mascots is directed by Christopher Guest, who directed Best In Show and Waiting For Guffman and starred in This Is Spinal Tap. The film centres on sports mascots competing for the most prestigious honour in their field — the Gold Fluffy.

The official trailer is available below. At first look, the plot for ClownTown is sparse. A one line synopsis reveals very little. The trailer also offers few explanations. Though, a voice-over narration states: "clowns are like that - like a pack of dogs" and "ghosts haunted this town for years." These ghosts are set to square off against four defenceless friends, in this mysterious feature. As well, the film's first poster is hosted here. The graphic shows many of the villains.

It looks like March is going to be a big month in VOD releases for genre fans, as there are a handful of great titles to keep an eye out for in the coming weeks. Say, you know what would have made the Tommy Lee Jones disaster movie Volcano better? Lava zombies and cult icon Danny Trejo, if Rene Perez’s undead disaster movie is anything to go by. Uncork’d Entertainment have announced the Us release dates for director Rene Perez’s The Burning Dead (formerly Volcano Zombies), which features action superstar Danny Trejo (Machete), along with Tom Downey (Axe Giant), Moniqua Plante (Nashville), Robert F. Lyons (Dark Night of the Scarecrow), Nicole Cummins (Logan), Kevin Norman (Melissa & Joey), Kyle T. Heffner (Seinfeld), Julia Lehman (Cheerleader Massacre 2), Tom Nagel (Hillside Cannibals), Jenny Lin (Piranhaconda), Robert Amstler (Alien Showdown), and Morgan Lester (John Carter).

Written and produced by Jeff Miller and Jason Ancona (co-writers and producers of Axe Giant), The Burning Dead pits a horde of lava-filled zombies against a sheriff charged with the plight to rescue an estranged family from a volcano eruption. Trejo plays Night Wolf, a Native American warrior who knows way too much about the curse that unearthed the coffin dodgers.

Volcano Zombies, the new horror/disaster feature co-starring Danny Trejo, is finishing post-production, and the producers have just released the first trailer and some additional stills.

Written and produced by Jeff Miller and Jason Ancona (co-writers and producers of Axe Giant: The Wrath Of Paul Bunyan), the film's director is Rene Perez (The Dead And The Damned).

Volcano Zombies is about a sheriff who must rescue an estranged family from a mountain during a volcano eruption and fight off a horde of lava-filled zombies that have shot out of the volcano, brought to life by a curse.
