Bet is exploring the story behind Andre Harrell’s iconic hip-hop record label, Uptown Records.

The network has ordered a three-part miniseries titled “Uptown,” with Harrell on board to executive produce. The series is scheduled to hit the airwaves in 2020.

Launched in 1986, following a joint venture deal with McA, Uptown Records played a key role in launching the careers of some of the most influential voices in hip-hop and R&b, including Heavy D & The Boyz, Russell Simmons, Lyor Cohen, Mary J. Fox on Wednesday announced that Empire creator Lee Daniels’ newest musical drama Star will get an early premiere on Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 9/8c, following the fall finale of Empire (which will shift to 8/7c for the first time ever). Star will then resume its rookie season on Wednesday, Jan. 4 at 9/8c. Empire, meanwhile, will return in the spring to close out its third season.

Tyrese Gibson is joining the music-themed series as a recurring love interest for Queen Latifah’s quasi-matriarch Carlotta, TVLine has learned. Gibson’s character, Pastor Bobby Harris, presides over Carlotta’s warm congregation. A handsome ex-thug who has turned his life over to God, Bobby begins a relationship with Carlotta. Their romance will be challenged on many fronts and which will ultimately create a crisis of faith for them both.

Lee Daniels' upcoming music drama Star has found a new showrunner. Chuck Pratt (Desperate Housewives, The Young and the Restless) has come on board the Fox midseason series as an executive producer, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Charles Murray has been set as executive producer and showrunner of Lee Daniels‘ Fox show “Star,” TheWrap has learned. The show was recently picked up to series for the 2016-17 season. The gig for Murray comes as part of a two-year deal that he just signed with 20th Century Fox Television, under which the writer-producer will also develop new projects for the studio. “Star” follows three talented singers who navigate the cutthroat music business on their road to success, and it stars three newcomers (Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny and Brittany O’Grady) as the young singers. Rising British actor Malachi Kirby has been cast as Kunta Kinte in A+E Networks' upcoming remake of the classic Alex Haley-penned story turned legendary mini-series "Roots".

This event TV series will follow the iconic character as he is captured from his homeland Gambia and sold into slavery in America, along the way witnessing the American Revolution and Civil War.

Filming begins next month in South Africa and New Orleans ahead of a 2016 airing on Lifetime, A+E and the History Channel. Lawrence Konner, Mark Rosenthal, Alison McDonald and Charles Murray have penned the new adaptation.

Early, rough box-office estimates: Oz to have best debut of 2013 by a wide margin Oz the Great and Powerful is about to have the strongest (by far) opening weekend of the year at the Us / Canada box office. Directed by Spider-Man's Sam Raimi, and starring James Franco as Oz, Oz scored an estimated $2 million at Thursday evening and midnight screenings and the film is expected to bring in about $23 million-25 million today (apparently that figure includes the Thursday screenings). Now, a key reason for the Oz "record" box office feat is the current year's highly disappointing attendance numbers to date. 2012 will be the first year that GeekTrant will invade WonderCon, mostly due to the fact that it was moved down to Anaheim, CA this year which is right in our backyard. We're all pretty excited about attending this year, as we've heard it's a much smaller more intimate version of San Diego Comic Con.

WonderCon is set to open on Friday, March 16th and run through Sunday, March 18th at the Anaheim Convention Center. If you plan on attending let us know, and maybe we can meet up and hang out for a bit!

The episode revolves around the blossoming relationship between Jasmine -- a single mother of a little boy Jabbar -- and a handsome, caring, successful pediatrician, Dr. Joe, who is longing for a settled, family life. As the show opens Joe is showing Jasmine pictures of houses, and when he comes to one on a cul de sac he wonders aloud, "Wouldn't it be a wonderful place for a kid to grow up?" 10:00-11:00 Writing Animated Feature Films— The Writers Guild of America's Animation Writers Caucus once again sponsors a panel on writing for animation. Some of the most successful films of the last decade have been animated. But how different are they to write from live-action features? From television scripts? And what about direct-to-dvd animated features? The writers of some of the top animated features will talk about the process of creating those films, their interactions with the artists and the studios, and how they came to be involved with their project. Panelists tentatively scheduled include Alan Burnett (Green Lantern: First Flight), Darren Lemke (Shrek Forever After...

A&E Network has handed out a cast-contingent pilot order to the scripted drama Under from Gary Randall and Nancy Miller. Fox Television Studios has come on board to produce.

The project, created by Charles Murray, was first announced in May as part of A&E's scripted development slate. It centers on a young thug who, after being marked for death by the mob and turning state's evidence against them, joins the witness protection program. He becomes an NYPD patrolman but is unable to escape his past.

Murray also wrote the pilot. Randall and Miller will executive produce.

The pickup comes on the heels of A&E's recently announced cast-contingent pilot orders for Danny Fricke and The Beast, both from Sony Pictures TV, and The Cleaner, from CBS Paramount.

A&E is looking for scripted drama projects that will complement its other programming, particularly such acquired series as The Sopranos and CSI: Miami. Senior vp drama programming Tana Nugent Jamieson recently said the intention is to premiere one scripted series in early summer 2008 -- marking the network's first original drama series since 2002 -- and possibly a second series after that.
