Despite his short stature and generally flamboyant manners, he was reportedly very powerful.

He was a very flamboyant figure in a rather conservative country, though he never publicly announced his homosexuality. On one occasion, in a formal event with guests from the high echelon of the government and the army, he went on stage wearing thigh-high boots, sparkling tights, a mini-skirt, complete with a peacock tail.

He designed all his stage costumes himself.

He was extremely overweight in his final years, very rarely making appearances on TV, and always from the waist up when he did. In 1996, soon after receiving an award, he had a heart attack returning to backstage, and was rushed to the hospital, where he passed away. So in a sense, it can be said that he died on stage.
