Edit

Biography

    • Born and raised in Hawaii, Joe Moe is a 3rd generation Polynesian entertainer descended from international stars of "Felix Mendelsshon's Hawaiian Serenaders," Pulu and Louisa Moe (circa 1920s-1940s), nephew of Tau and Rose Moe of the "The Tau Moe Family" and son of Samoan knife dancer and graphic artist Josefa Moe and psych R.N., Marilyn Moe. Joe was on stage from 2-years-old and was nurtured in his love of movies. He studied theater with William Laird Mayhew (Chaminade U) and puppetry with Kermit Love of "The Muppets'" (U of H).

Moving to the "Mainland" and Hollywood in the 80s, Joe sculpted a Halloween mask ("Schizoid") for legendary Don Post Studios and studied FX makeup with Michael Westmore (UCLA) before turning his attention to music, performing in bands "Some Philharmonic," "King Pez," "The Native Shrubs," etc., and as a studio vocalist for Disney, Van Dyke Parks, etc. Joe released his solo album "Mainland" (2008) before committing to being a writer. He is a published horror expert, having contributed regularly to genre pubs "Famous Monsters of Filmland," "Rue Morgue," "Mad Monster" and others.

Joe Moe is recognized as caretaker of Hollywood historian and genre icon Forrest J Ackerman (Nov. 24, 1916 - Dec. 4, 2008), whose influence is known to have inspired the careers of Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, John Landis, Gene Simmons, Stephen King, Peter Jackson, Guillermo Del Toro and many others. Ackerman was mentor to Joe who lived with "Forry" in his 18-room "Ackermuseum" of 300,000+ artworks, props, books and posters representing the legacy of Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror films. Joe has won the Rondo Hatton Award for "Monster Kid of the Year" (2008) and "Event of the Year" (2009).

Joe Moe served as Creative Director for "Ulalume Films" and "3MAC Productions" where he co-wrote, co-designed and produced the deconstructed slasher-film, "Red Velvet" (2008) and has multiple projects optioned including "Devil's Highway," "The Sin Eater" and "Breaking Champ Smith." Joe also wrote the book for the stage musical "Killah Vanilla" with prolific composer Brian Woodbury.

Joe Moe edits the catalog for premiere Hollywood auction house Profiles in History and is slated to direct his first feature, "Wasted Space," for the innovative new "Interdependent Pictures" in 2017. Joe promotes and hosts the Mad Monster Party horror conventions annually, across the country.
