An amazing Blu-ray year is capped by a genuine favorite, rescued by its filmmaker and set aside for almost twenty years. Wim Wenders was forced to make a shortened version of what he hoped would be his greatest success, following Wings of Desire: but he cleverly saved his 4.5-hour uncut version, making its Blu-ray debut on December 10. Longform video is currently the rage, so perhaps the time has finally come for the uncut Bis ans Ende der Welt. The music soundtrack is nothing less than fantastic, not to be missed.

The Specials, the latest feature from The Intouchables filmmaking duo Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano, has been set to close out the 72nd Cannes Film Festival — just don’t call it the “Closing Film.” Cannes organizers said today that they’re doing away with the distinction, preferring to brand the final pic of the Riviera shindig as the “Last Screening.” There are a couple of pop culture winks in the switch: In French, the final movie will henceforth officially be referred to as “La Dernière Séance” which is the local title of Peter Bogdanovich’s 1971 Oscar winner The Last Picture Show, as well as a tune by French actor/singer Eddy Mitchell.
The Specials, a social comedy that was submitted at the last minute to the selection committee, will screen in the Lumière Theater after the Closing ceremony on Saturday May 25.

The silent French film Au Bonheur Des Dames (1930 – aka Ladies’ Paradise) screens Saturday May 6th at 11am at The St. Louis Art Museum (Forest Park, 1 Fine Arts Dr, St. Louis, Mo). The film will be accompanied by Elsie Parker and The Poor People of Paris. Tickets for this event are $15 general admission and $10 for museum members. Tickets can be purchased in advance from Metrotix or by calling 314.534.1111.
Julien Duvivier’s final silent film is a modern retelling of Emile Zola’s panoramic chronicle of mid-19th-century Parisian society, centering on a small fabric shop struggling to survive in the shadow of a luxury department store. With expressionistic shades of Erich von Stroheim and G.W. Pabst, the film captures the rhythms of urban life and creates a stinging portrait of capitalist ruthlessness, class tensions, and sexual competition. Santa Barbara International Film Festival expands to Latino Cinema
Not only did Sbiff host a new summer film showcase “The Wave Film Festival” which just conclude with Claude Lelouch's 'We Love You, You Bastard' winning the Audience Award its inaugural event, but Mickey Duzdevich, the new Wave Film Festival Director, along with Sbiff Executive Director Roger Durling, have announced, “Due to its success with over 3,000 attendees, we have decided to return next Spring with a Spanish and Latin America edition, along with the 2nd French Wave next July. As we approach our 30th anniversary, it's fantastic that we're able to expand Sbiff's vision and programming.”
Says Mickey Duzdevich, "The Wave was a huge success and left patrons with a new joy for French cinema. It was a delight to bring the culture of France to our own Riviera and give the moviegoer an enhanced experience. We look forward to the future of The Wave Film Festival and we're excited to share the beauty of cinema from all over the world.”
"We Love You, You Bastard" (Salaud, on t'aime) is Claude Lelouch's 44th feature film. French rock icon Johnny Hallyday plays Jacques, a retired war photographer attempting to live a peaceful life in the Alps. With a new girlfriend, Nathalie, he appears content, but his old friend Frédéric, played by another singing idol, Eddy Mitchell, knows better. There is a little matter of four daughters, each one from a different conquest, each one estranged from him, and each leaving their shadow on Jacques’ emotional life.
Realizing that reconciliation is the thing Jacques craves most, Frédéric, a doctor, concocts a little lie to convince the daughters to visit their absentee father. Well, not so little. In fact, it’s a really big lie, and as the family gathers, as accounts are settled through tears and laughter, the lie gets harder and harder to retract. The luminous lineup of female stars includes a radiant Sandrine Bonnaire.
The Santa Barbara International Film Festival, presented by Ugg® Australia, will celebrate its 30th Anniversary January 27 – February 7, 2015. Dedicated to discovering and showcasing the best in independent and international cinema, Sbiff will offer 12 days of 200+ films, tributes and symposiums that range from American indie films to world cinema and everything in-between. With its commitment to cultural diversity and powerful storytelling, Sbiff transforms beautiful downtown Santa Barbara, CA into a rich destination for film lovers, attracting more than 85,000 attendees. Iris Murdoch suffered from Alzheimer's disease toward the end of her life, but it was her husband, the critic John Bayley, who observed that the suffering was strangely contagious. "Alzheimer's obviously has me in its grip," he reflected in Elegy for Iris, the second of three memoirs he wrote about his wife's gradual decline. "Does the caregiver involuntarily mimic the Alzheimer's condition? I'm sure I do."

A Man and His Women: Lelouch’s Latest a Lumbering, Bloated Ensemble
Nearing his 80’s and with over fifty credits to his name, Oscar and Palme d’Or winning director Claude Lelouch bows his latest venture, We Love You, You Bastard, co-written with writer/actress Valerie Perrin, a title that elicits the kind of chuckles the film itself does not. A dysfunctional family drama harpooned on a comedy of errors scheme flaccidly spins into an ellipses of Bunuelian progeny patterns before a sharp left into Agatha Christie territory extends the running time by an unnecessary forty five minutes. With a varied cast of major French talents, there are a handful of successful moments, but without pronounced payoff. At best, a fluff piece showcasing some industry pros, the increasingly erring narrative mistakes wonky details for subtle prowess and is unfortunately a grating effort from the master director, whose other more recent...

LONDON -- Universal Music Group International said Wednesday that it is digging deep into its back catalog to make about 100,000 deleted European recordings available exclusively via Internet digital download. The first group of 3,000 tracks, available starting in mid-February, will include recordings made during the past 40 years in the U.K., France and Germany. Featured artists include Nirvana, Marianne Faithfull, Eddie & the Hot Rods, Brian Auger & Julie Driscoll, Chris De Burgh, Big Country, Jacques Brel, Nana Mouskouri, Eddy Mitchell and Brigitte Bardot. "Over the next three to four years, we aim to reissue perhaps as many as 10,000 albums for downloading, which amounts to more than 100,000 tracks. This program will offer material that in some cases goes back to the early days of recorded music," said Barney Wragg, senior vp at UMGI's eLabs division.
