In 1995, David Fincher pivoted from making a "Blade" movie and instead gave us one of the best neo-noir crime dramas of all time. "Se7en" follows Morgan Freeman as Somerset, a retiring police detective who takes on one final case with the new transfer David Mills (Brad Pitt), only to find himself investigating a string of increasingly gruesome murders perpetrated by an elaborate serial killer.
Decades after its original theatrical release, "Se7en" remains a masterpiece. It's a thrilling cat-and-mouse game with a cast at their peak of their acting powers, along with an eerie atmosphere that can best be described as Gotham City without Batman to protect it (which makes sense since "The Batman" owes so much to this movie). Even if you know what's coming, it's hard not to become so engrossed in the world and the story that you find yourself surprised by the film's shocking ending as if...

We’ve known for over a year that director David Fincher was working on a 4K (or 8K) restoration of his 1995 film Seven – or Se7en, if you prefer – and the 4K version of the movie was even screened at this year’s TCM Classic Film Festival. Now, we know when fans are going to have the chance to own the 4K restoration of Seven on disc, as Blu-ray.com has revealed that it’s set to be released on January 7th.
Scripted by Andrew Kevin Walker, Seven has the following synopsis: When retiring police Detective William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) tackles a final case with the aid of newly transferred David Mills (Brad Pitt), they discover a number of elaborate and grizzly murders. They soon realize they are dealing with a serial killer (Kevin Spacey) who is targeting people he thinks represent one of the seven deadly sins. Somerset also befriends Mills’ wife,...

David Fincher is like the wizard of modern cinema who has conjured films that dig deep into the human psyche. With his brilliant and meticulous filmmaking, he has created experiences that dive deep into the gritty corners of human nature and remain unforgettable. He didn’t start small; his first film Alien 3 marked the beginning of Fincher’s obsession with atmospheric tension. Although it wasn’t a smash hit, yet it created a world of his edgy approach.

However, it was his 1995 Seven that truly put him on the map as a powerhouse in Hollywood. With Fincher’s unmistakable style, he became the go-to director for high-stake stories. His dedication to perfectionism lead to countless takes, sometimes even over 100. Beyond just thrillers, the nine times Academy Award winner has crafted cult classics like 1999 Fight Club that felt more like psychological puzzle than straightforward story. King Kong did not, in fact, have, er, doo-doo on Denzel Washington at the turn of the 21st century. Fresh off his second Oscar win (and his first as a lead performer) for playing dirty LAPD detective Alonzo Harris in Antoine Fuqua's "Training Day," the capital-m Movie Star made a habit of working with his old friends over the decade that followed. Indeed, if one were to run through his resume, one would note that most of Washington's films in the 2000s were directed by either one of his former collaborators or Denzel himself. Then again, if your pals were Spike Lee, Tony Scott, Jonathan Demme, and the under-appreciated Carl Franklin, you'd want to make all of your movies with them too.

Denzel Washington, regarded as one of the best actors of his generation, has a career spanning several decades with work on screen as well as on stage. Initially, he started his career in theater, but soon transitioned to television with the medical drama St. Elsewhere. This project put the actor on the map, and soon every filmmaker in town wanted to work with him.

There was never a time when Denzel Washington wasn't on a hot streak. Not only does Washington have a talent for picking interesting or unique projects, but he also has the acting acumen to back up whatever he selects. Even when he's decided to make a mainstream genre thriller, clunky crime flick, or brutal, brainless actioner, he is always present, bringing nuance and texture to his performances. It also helps that Washington has become a go-to collaborator for multiple talented directors, having worked with Spike Lee, Antoine Fuqua, Carl Franklin, Jonathan Demme, and both Ridley and Tony Scott multiple times apiece. He has also taken it upon himself to produce 10 movies based on August Wilson's plays, two of which have already been made.

October brings many rewards, not the least of which is a slew of fantastic motion pictures to watch. I love a good horror movie, and the spooky season is the perfect time to bask in the morbid side of Hollywood and beyond. Whether you travel back in time to feast on Universal's classic monster series like "Frankenstein," "Dracula," and "Creature from the Black Lagoon" or indulge in modern fare such as "Hereditary," "Get Out," or "M3GAN," there's enough variety to please all but the pickiest of movie fans.
Moreover, most horror films require multiple viewings to fully appreciate, if only to catch all the sneaky Easter eggs and clues the filmmakers squeeze into every frame. Watch Jordan Peele's "Nope" again, and you'll pick up a hefty dose of not-so-subtle foreshadowing that'll make you respect the alien drama even more. Or take another look at any of M. The Primetime Emmys are not necessarily known for honoring projects featuring casts that are primarily minority/people of color. The TV academy has never, for instance, given the Best Drama Series trophy to such a show. The statuette for Best Comedy Series has been won by a series featuring a largely minority cast precisely once: “The Cosby Show” in 1985. But the category of top limited/anthology/miniseries has paid golden tribute to programs with mostly minority casts a handful of times before, helping give Netflix’s “Beef” with its predominantly Asian American lineup a genuine shot to take home the biggest prize.
“Beef” tied with “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” for the most nominations among all non-regular series programs with 13. It’s presently in the lead among Gold Derby voters in the limited series race with 16/5 combined odds. Its star Ali Wong is also in first place among limited lead actresses,...

Well folks, it's that time yet again. With March coming to an end, that means that streamers like Netflix, Amazon Prime and HBO Max are shuffling their catalog around for April. HBO Max is consistently bringing great new things to the platform each month — and fan favorite series like "Succession," "A Black Lady Sketch Show," and "Titans," will make their return too — but I've always been more concerned with the films and shows that depart. The streamer's monthly cull with be an especially extensive one this moth; quite a few must-sees are leaving the platform in April. Landmark romantic comedies like "Bringing Up Baby," seminal classics like "Citizen Kane" and dystopian dramas like "The Book of Eli" will all be headed away this month. As ever, we do still have some time before some of these go bye-bye, so make sure to check out these titles before they're phased out.

When you think of HBO's classic mid-'00s series "The Wire," it's the characters that come to mind first -- people like McNulty (Dominic West), D'Angelo, Kima (Sonja Sohn), or Stringer Bell (Idris Elba). All of them have their place in the show's vast tapestry, but their stories never feel manufactured or inauthentic. Their major failures and small triumphs echo and clash against those of others, comprising the major drama of the show. And Stringer, the ambitious climber at the top of the show's Barksdale criminal empire, had some of the show's most engaging material. Of course, it helped that he was played by a future movie star.
While you can now see him on the big screen fighting monstrous lions in "Beast" or playing a romantic Djinn in a George Miller film, Idris Elba's work in "The Wire" some 20 years earlier was much more low-key. Stringer is nothing like the typical fantasy gangster.

Critics all agree that “The Batman” ranks among the best Batman movies, if not the best Batman film as Matt Reeves delivers a grounded take of the Dark Knight detective in a film noir that has has shades of “Seven,” “Zodiac” and “Chinatown” thrown in for good measure.
“What’s more impressive than what Reeves has done — which, even at its most superficial, is essentially (and very effectively) to remake ‘Seven’ with Robert Pattinson as the jaded William Somerset to Jeffrey Wright’s increasingly disillusioned David Mills — is the fact that he grafts the Fincher film’s unimaginable atrocities onto a Caped Crusader adventure for a purpose thankfully more meaningful than taking funny-book characters ‘seriously’ for a fast buck,” wrote TheWrap’s Todd Gilchrist in his review of the film.

Nothing confers seriousness in a superhero movie more effectively than a protracted running time.
At 176 minutes, “The Batman” admittedly falls short of Snyder’s kitchen-sink cut of “Justice League” by more than an hour, a half-dozen needle-drops, and too many slow-motion shots to count. Nevertheless, Matt Reeves’ franchise kickstarter feels like the ultimate extension of this borderline self-parodying (if admittedly very successful) impulse to take characters in silly costumes and treat them with po-faced, almost oppressive solemnity.

As if made to prove that film noir isn’t one genre, but all the genres, Steve Conrad’s “Ultra City Smiths” tackles its many creative departures with captivating verve, gliding from crime saga to sporadic musical to stop-motion animated whodunit, all while imbuing each with a spirit so bleak it makes the new series’ dreamy dancing between absurd comedy and moving drama absolutely stunning.

Ah, the twist ending. There's nothing like watching a film, thinking you've got the whole thing figured out, only to have the rug pulled out from under you in the final moments with a revelation that nothing has been quite as it seemed. The film followed detectives David Mills (Brad Pitt) and William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) as they tracked down a killer who was drawing inspiration from each of the seven deadly sins as he carried out his string of heinous murders, leaving behind a tableau at each crime scene more depraved than the...

It’s a question that The Blacklist viewers have hoped to get answered for a full year, ever since Mr. Kaplan dug up a mysterious suitcase before jumping to her death in last May’s finale. (At some point, the suitcase became a duffel bag, because The Blacklist is nothing if not practical.)
We’ve known for a year that the duffel bag contains human bones, but the identity of the poor skeleton inside it has been kept a secret — just the way Red wanted. But on Wednesday’s Season 5 ender,...

Over the weekend, Gwyneth Paltrow posted a photo of herself and her boyfriend Brad Falchuk in their Halloween costumes and it's perfection. This could very well be one of the best celebrity Halloween costumes ever!
The costumes are themed after David Fincher's Se7en, which Paltrow co-starred in. She played Tracy Mills in the film, the wife of Detective David Mills (Brad Pitt).
During the climatic finale, we learn that Tracy was murdered by John Doe (Kevin Spacey) and her head was put in a box and dropped off in the middle of a field, where her husband David was waiting. This is the point where he utters the classic line... "What's in the box?!" I included that scene for you to watch below.
Well, as you can see, Paltrow's costume pays tribute to this iconic scene and she put her head in the box for Halloween. Her boyfriend is dressed up as John Doe.

The holiday hasn't even officially happened yet, but Gwyneth Paltrow has won Halloween this year.
On Sunday, the actress posted a photo of herself in a costume only she could pull off: her head in a box, in a reference to the 1995 thriller Seven.

Tracy is murdered by John Doe (Kevin Spacey), a serial killer who uses the seven deadly sins to pick victims. Two decades later, we're still totally creeped out by "Seven."
The seven-deadly-sins-inspired serial killer thriller, which opened 20 years ago this week (on September 22, 1995), helped put director David Fincher on the map and marked a career milestone for stars Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, and Kevin Spacey. What's more, from its jittery opening credits to its grim shocker of an ending, "Seven" has become a template for how to make a dark, suspenseful crime drama.
Despite its many imitators, however, "Seven" maintains its secrets, from who almost starred in it to how it accomplished its unsettling effects to the softened ending that was almost tacked on. Here are some of those secrets. (Warning: Spoilers follow, though, c'mon, the movie's 20 years old.)
1. "Seven" screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker has a cameo. He's the corpse seen at the beginning of the movie.
2. Walker wrote the screenplay, his first, while living in New York City and...

Judi Dench is not about to put the brakes on a remarkable career that has already spanned nearly six decades. But the 80-year-old wouldn't mind shaving off a few of those years. "Someone said to me, 'You have such a wealth of knowledge,' and I just said 'I'd rather be young and know nothing, actually.' Bugger the wealth of knowledge." Gone Girl review: Rosamund Pike a revelation in David Fincher thriller
David Fincher brings Gillian Flynn's novel Gone Girl to the big screen this week, and long-standing fans of the filmmaker will be delighted to know the thriller is up there with his very best.
Gone Girl, starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike as a couple whose marriage severely hits the rocks, is the tenth feature in Fincher's 20-year career. Digital Spy picks out some of the highlights from his previous nine films below...
1. Alien 3's death of Ripley (1992)
Fincher himself is no big fan of his directorial debut Alien³, a blockbuster that experienced a turbulent production and was ultimately disowned by the man calling the shots behind the camera. That said, it featured a watershed moment for the franchise - Ripley sacrificing herself while a Xenomorph bursts through her chest, desperate to escape certain death.

Last summer, at a press conference to promote what would turn out to be the final TV series of his career, CBS' "The Crazy Ones," Robin Williams was asked what it was like to spend decades walking into rooms where everyone expected him to be instantly, wickedly funny. "I think the pressure to be funny all the time, it’s like, 'Dance funny man, you know?'" he admitted. "I think sometimes there’s that pressure." In a too-short life that was often wildly successful and at times — up until his apparent suicide at age 63 — deeply troubled, Williams coped with that pressure to be funny at a moment's notice with remarkable grace, energy and talent. Even if we leave out his brilliant, Oscar-winning film career and focus solely on his TV work, so many scenes and jokes come instantly to mind: his star-making turn as daffy alien Mork from Ork,...

There may have been a distinct lack of silverware at Newcastle United over the past four decades or so, but there’ll be a different kind of silver on display when the Magpies take to the field this weekend.
The Toon’s trip to Liverpool for their final game of the current campaign on Sunday will see Alan Pardew’s men don their all-new silver away kit for the very first time. (On sale now from the club shop)
Fabricio Coloccini, Cheick Tiote and Co will be following in some very famous footsteps when they emerge from the tunnel at Anfield, with the colour used by the St. James’ Park outfit as far back as the early 1980s.
Newcastle’s traveling fans have enjoyed some memorable silver-lined moments from some big names at home and abroad, and here WhatCulture.com looks at seven of them.

2013 has been something of a vintage year for Brad Pitt – his troubled zombie thriller World War Z became a smash hit against all odds, and he co-produced Steve McQueen's critically acclaimed Oscar frontrunner 12 Years a Slave.

Character actor specialist, Chris Lilley, initially introduced audiences to his over-achieving, relentlessly self-absorbed and superficial private school girl character, Ja.mie King on 2005.s We Could Be Heroes, as one of six unlikely contenders for Australian of the Year. He then plunged her into the unchartered territory of public school on his next series, Summer Heights High in 2007. Now, Ja.mie is the centre of attention in Ja.mie: Private School Girl. A co-production of ABC, BBC and HBO, the series premiered last night on ABC1 to a total audience, inclusive of regional ratings, of 1.27 million. Memorable quotes and buzz words from the show were already trending on Twitter shortly after the first episode aired; particularly the term .quiche. which Ja.mie uses to describe someone who is especially attractive, or in her words, .better than hot.. Some critics sang the Hillford Girls. Grammar School Captain.s praise, such as...

Denzel Washington is known for his tremendous on-screen presence. However, there's more to the star than meets the eye. In fact, there are a few things about the six-time Oscar nominee that most don't know, such as how he got his unusual first name and his encounter with a prophet who foresaw his success.
This weekend Denzel stars alongside Mark Wahlberg in his latest movie, "2 Guns." Since Washington is an actor who will always blow you away on screen, you might as well get to know him a bit better off it. Below, check out 25 little-known facts about the star.
1. Washington is named after his father, who was named after the doctor who delivered him, Dr. Denzel. The actor often points out how, although both first names are spelled the same, his father's name is pronounced with the stress on the first syllable (Den-zel), whereas the actor's name is pronounced...

The late David Mills wrote for some of the best dramas of the last 20 years, including "The Wire," "Treme," "NYPD Blue," "Homicide" and "ER." But before that he was a journalist and a critic, and he always had a tendency to look at his new industry from the viewpoint of his old one, and to have an unyielding standard for shows that aspired to play in the same ballpark as the ones he'd been lucky enough to work for. When I was a younger critic, I would often grow enamored of some new show because of its creative pedigree, or...

John Doe’s apartment? As in the home of creepy, pervy Kevin Spacey from Se7en? Go ahead. Issue a worldwide “weirdo alert.” Sound the alarms, but I can’t help myself. David Fincher’s 1995 thriller still does a number on me to this day — just in a “feel good” kind of way. Good thing that doesn’t sound even creepier.
Among Se7en’s numerous successes is its ability to reprimand the viewer’s obsession with an overwhelming backlash of the morbid. Writer Andrew Kevin Walker achieves this in grim fashion and in less subtler ways throughout, but Se7en also pulls in the viewer with its killer’s cloudy cult of personality in “John Doe.” When detectives David Mills (Brad Pitt) and William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) find Doe’s residence through a paper trail of library loans — works from the Marquis de Sade and Dante, naturally — it’s a drab apartment...

Gluttony, greed, sloth, envy, wrath, pride, lust – everyone has a sin. For detectives William Somerset and David Mills they live among these sins, everyday, a crumbling city of crime all around them. But nothing can prepare the partners for the killings they are about to experience, all of which begins when they find a morbidly obese man who has died from the forced ingestion of spaghetti. What starts as one bizarre crime turns into a case of serial murders as a predator named John Doe begins to execute victims by paying homage to the “deadly sin” they represent.

Remember a time before 1995 when movies were loaded with rainbows and puppies? Strawberry ice cream poured out of every frame. Then Se7en came along. Then things got really interesting. David Fincher‘s second effort at feature filmmaking caught a storm, and it was one filled with melancholic grime and depressing endings. Also there was something about a box and what was in it. The state of thrillers changed forever, and, while many copycats tried to pick up the scraps Se7en left in its wake, none would recapture that initial sense of dread when John Doe screamed at Detective David Mills, the killers hands covered in blood. Paints a pretty picture, doesn’t it? Well, with this week’s Commentary Commentary, we’re hoping the track we’ve selected paints a couple of dozen more. David Fincher, Brad Pitt, and Morgan Freeman lend their voices and insight into this commentary track for Se7en. If...

I've known David Milch for almost 16 years, and I have never seen him more animated or excited than the day we met, when at the tail end of an interview about "NYPD Blue," he smiled and said, "You should come to the track with me." And over the course of an afternoon, Milch regaled me and "NYPD" writer David Mills with stories about a lifetime of watching horse racing. He even offered to cut us in on his winnings if a horse...

No doubt: it's been a very good year for both these stars. And much as I admire Jean Dujardin's sublime performance in The Artist, my hunch is that the industry will favor one of its own on Oscar night. So who will it be -- George or Brad? I'm saving my prediction for a later Oscar piece, but for now simply want to consider these actors' respective contributions, leading up to and including 2011. And you'll note I say "actors," because one thing this past year confirmed was that both these handsome, movie-idol type personalities can, in fact, really act. Some will claim they've always known it, but for me this was a pretty striking discovery. Too often Pitt and Clooney have been constrained by their leading man status to playing cool, heroic protagonists who save the day and get the girl. And they appear to be playing themselves. (Sometimes even on the same screen,...

Rome – The British lawyer who became the centerpiece of one of the main criminal cases against Italian media mogul Silvio Berlusconi for claiming that Berlusconi paid him $600,000 to lie on his behalf in court said Thursday that he fabricated the charges in order to avoid paying taxes on the money. The case surrounding Berlusconi and attorney David Mills was one of the most puzzling in Italy because a court found Mills guilty of accepting a bribe from Berlusconi, while evidence was ruled inconclusive regarding whether or not Berlusconi was guilty of paying the bribe to Mills.
