Another episode of Silo is out today on Apple TV+, and it should come as no surprise that it's another good hour of television. At this point in Silo's second season, it's almost starting to feel redundant to sing its praises; this has been a rock solid season for Apple's sci-fi show, and it's showing no signs of slowing down.
"Descent" escalates the already high stakes across the board. There's a feeling now that we're speeding toward a bloody conclusion in the back half of the season, sparked by a manhunt for Knox (Shane McRae) and Shirley (Remmie Milner), two of the leaders from Mechanical who were framed for the murder of Judge Meadows (Tanya Moodie) in last week's episode, "The Harmonium." It would be very convenient for Mayor Bernard Holland (Tim Robbins) if Knox and Shirley were strung up by an angry mob he whipped up to...

In my Silo Season 2 Episode 3 review, I lamented the fact that we’re several episodes into a second season, and the story is starting to crawl.
Maybe I should have kept my mouth shut because Silo Season 2 Episode 4 opens up with a grievous deus ex machina that lays out everything Mechanical is up against. It’s literally written on a wall for them to read.
Apparently, despite all their visits to this dark and otherwise unknown area of the Silo, no one ever read these gigantic messages written on a 100′ x 100′ wall and thought, “Gee, that sounds really bad.”
(Apple TV+)
It’s a genuinely face-palm moment, a cringe-inducing flash of “what the actual…” well, you know the rest.
It’s an occasion of “Hey, let’s get this show on the road” condensed down to, “Just write the story on a wall that everyone sees, but no one actually...

The fourth episode of Silo's second season, "The Harmonium," is a pivotal turning point. Over the past few weeks we've watched as Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson) arrived at the neighboring Silo 17 and befriended Solo (Steve Zahn), the last living survivor of his Silo and her only hope of getting the materials she needs to build a suit to return home. Meanwhile, rebellion is brewing in Silo 18. As people demand answers and Mayor Bernard Holland (Tim Robbins) is forced to crack down, he makes a shocking power play that puts Knox (Shane McRae) and Shirley (Remmie Milner) in the crossfire.
It should surprise no one that "The Harmonium" is another great episode of Silo, even if it does bid farewell to one of my new favorite characters. Read on for our review, which contains Spoilers.

The third episode of AppleTV+’s latest sci-fi show sees a rebellion bubbling underneath. Here’s our Silo season 2 episode 3 review.
Juliette is back! Or, technically, we’re back with Juliette in the third episode of Silo season 2. As I mentioned in last week’s review, episodes 1 and 2 almost acted as a two-part opener for the season and now that we’ve had our update with the original Silo, we’re back with our heroine.
As you’ll remember, episode 1 ended with Juliette finding silo 17’s vault and a strange man inside it threatening to kill her. Trying to make friends with the man, Solo (played by Steve Zahn), Juliette asks about what happened to the other people in silo 17. Solo, who got his name just as simply as you think, explains that the people decided to leave and at first, things seemed to be okay. Judging by the bodies though,...

The more you lie to people, the more the lies unravel. That’s something Bernard needs to deal with in Silo season 2 episode 3. Meanwhile, Juliette just needs some answers.
Caution: This post contains Spoilers from Silo season 2 episode 3
We see in dystopian worlds that as leaders try to hold onto power, they end up causing a rebellion to happen. Bernard knows this is the case. The problem is the world that has been set up within the silo makes it impossible for him to share the truth.
It’s clear that he knows more than he is letting on. Judge Meadows also knows more considering she was once his shadow. She wishes she could forget that—and it does make me wonder why she hasn’t taken this memory loss pill that Sims mentions in the episode. I guess while she wants to forget, there’s a lot that she wants to remember.

Silo season 2 is back with another episode on Apple TV+. If the premiere episode was all about Rebecca Ferguson's Juliette Nichols, then "Order" is about everybody else. The season's second episode brings us back to the original Silo, where we get to see how its residents are dealing now that Juliette has left. They don't know what happened to her — the last anyone saw of Juliette, she was walking over the hill outside the Silo and disappearing into the distance — but they do know that it changes their entire worldview, which hinges on people not being able to survive outside long enough to climb that hill.
This is a big episode with a lot of characters at play, so let's get right into it. There will be Spoilers for "Order" in this review.

The popular show “Silo” on Apple TV+ is back with a second season, following an 18-month break. The first episode of the 10-episode season of the science fiction thriller, about survivors living in a huge underground bunker, aired on Friday.
Based on Hugh Howey’s trilogy of books, the show continues to look at the lives of 10,000 people stuck in a structure a mile deep after a mysterious world disaster. The new season picks up where the last one left off, focused on Rebecca Ferguson’s character Juliette Nichols, who has left the safety of the silo.
Ferguson’s action skills are shown in the first episode of the season, “The Engineer,” where her character deals with the dangerous outside world. Inside the silo, the people who still live there are thinking about what will happen now that she’s gone and how that might affect their tightly controlled society.

At 10 protracted episodes, set inside a concrete structure reaching 144 levels underground to insulate thousands from the toxic world above, Silo’s first season was a fundamentally by-the-numbers dystopia. And in the wake of Amazon’s Fallout, it’s not even the only series on television that pivots on subterranean retrofuturism. In its sophomore season, though, Silo builds some momentum by broadening the scope of the shelter’s infighting.
Last season, engineer and ex-sheriff Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson) was exiled from the silo and, in full view of exterior camera feeds, didn’t die like so many others before her. Instead, she trudged out of sight into the wasteland beyond, becoming a symbol of rebellion for the downtrodden workers in the silo’s lowest Mechanical levels. The resulting powder keg invigorates the series, deemphasizing the overarching mystery in favor of dramatic irony—namely, that the hope that Juliette’s survival stokes is false.

Juliette (Rebecca Feguson) is alive above ground and looking for other survivors — and she finds one, in the form of new cast member Steve Zahn — while the inside of the Silo is on the verge of rebellion as the residents demand to know what’s really happening. “I’m not afraid of the rebellion,” says Bernard (Tim Robbins), the Silo’s mayor, who has devoted his life to keeping the populace in line. “I’m more afraid of what she saw.” She saw the truth, and in a world of secrets, there’s nothing more dangerous.

The first “Silo” Season 2 trailer promises to build on that jaw-dropping Season 1 cliffhanger with even more surprises, including Steve Zahn as a survivor from another silo.
The tag for the trailer finds Rebecca Ferguson’s Juliette taking refuge in another silo after venturing outside. There, she comes across a fellow survivor played by Steve Zahn, but he may not be so friendly.
Elsewhere Tim Robinson’s “head of It” is trying to quell a simmering rebellion after the entire silo saw Juliette go over the hill instead of dying like everyone else who’s ever left the silo.
“Season 2 is dark. It’s a bonkers exciting season,” Ferguson told TheWrap of the new season. “It is huge, man.”
The actress is under contract for four seasons which would hope to complete the adaptation of Hugh Howey’s book series, but so far “Silo” has only been renewed through Season 2.

“People see the same thing from different perspectives. And that fascinates me,” Harvey Keitel notes in an early scene while playing the title role in “Lansky,” writer-director Eytan Rockaway’s ambitious but uneven biopic about the notorious mobster Meyer Lansky.
It’s tempting to read this snippet of dialogue as Rockaway’s way of acknowledging, right from the start, that his indie drama is yet another interpretation of real-life events previously recounted, with varying degrees of accuracy, in features and TV movies as diverse as “Virginia Hill,” a half-forgotten 1974 TV-movie that marked Joel Schumacher’s debut as writer-director; the 1999 HBO production “Lansky,” starring Richard Dreyfuss and directed by John McNaughton from a script by David Mamet; and Barry Levinson’s “Bugsy” (1991), featuring Ben Kingsley well cast as Meyer Lansky opposite Warren Beatty’s Bugsy Siegel. Truth to tell, however, comparisons to those predecessors don’t always work in Rockaway’s favor.

“My reputation has a habit of preceding me,” Harvey Keitel’s Meyer Lansky explains toward the beginning of Lansky. “When they don’t know you, they put labels on you.” Writer-director Eytan Rockaway’s biographical crime feature is a no-frills, selective retelling of a notorious figure, which works because it puts a recognizable face to that label.
Nicknamed the “Mob’s Accountant,” Meyer Lansky knew his numbers, and Rockaway’s film only suffers when it hedges its bets. It begins with a grand promise to portray Lansky as he would have liked to have been portrayed in history. The recollections and the stories work very well when they stick to the gangster of the title. The low-budget, independent feel brings an immediacy, and more rebel street cred than the risk-taking former crime beat journalist at the center.

This weekend sees the release of another addition in the movies’ complex relationship with criminals, in particular gangsters. Or the “made men”. But not “made-up men” as in those early-talkie Warners classics, or the celebrated Corleone trilogy. This guy was the “real deal”, although he would’ve grimaced at seeing his name on a theatre marquee. He preferred working and plotting (a wiz at making the numbers click) in the shadows. Ah, but films have found him fascinating because of his unique heritage, as he was one of the few underworld figures who was Jewish, rather than the prevalent Catholic-raised Italian-Americans. Now, there was a fictionalized version of himself in that second of the earlier mentioned series, being Lee Strasberg as Hyman Roth in the superior sequel, The Godfather Part II. But several acclaimed actors have portrayed him on the big and small screen including Patrick Dempsey and Oscar-winners Richard Dreyfus and Sir Ben Kingsley.

This updated version of Jane Austen’s final novel is standard romcom fare –minus satire, wit and charm
Do we need a defensive ring of steel petticoats erected around Jane Austen’s novels – something, anything to stop them being updated into perky formulaic romcoms like this? Modern Persuasion is, to state the obvious, a modern version of Austen’s last (and arguably best) novel Persuasion: the story of Anne Elliot, who at 27 – still a mere slip of a girl – is staring down the barrel of spinsterdom. Eight years earlier she made the terrible mistake of turning down an offer of marriage from a penniless naval officer. The film-makers have meticulously transferred the book’s characters and plotting – and, to be fair, some of its warmth – to modern-day New York. But lost in adaptation is any trace of Austen’s wit and razor-sharp satire.

Back in 1995, in the midst of cinema’s brief fixation with Jane Austen, director Roger Michell made the definitive film of “Persuasion”: as literate and elegant as it was underestimated upon release. That same year, Amy Heckerling set the bar for modernized Austen adaptations with her lithely funny and era-defining “Emma” riff “Clueless.” A quarter-century later, the straightforwardly titled “Modern Persuasion” falls some way short of either benchmark. Refashioning Austen’s bittersweet final novel about love surmounting prickly English class politics as a peppy romantic comedy of missed connections among the moneyed New York media set, Alex Appel and Jonathan Lisecki’s film is both too innocuous and too flatly imagined to stir much feeling either way.
What it does have going for it is Alicia Witt, a likable, spirited star too little used by Hollywood of late, but recently a leading mainstay of Hallmark holiday movies — from which...

"What better way for me to get over my first love than to watch him fall in love with someone else...?" Samuel Goldwyn Films has released an official trailer for a romantic comedy titled Modern Persuasion, made by actors / filmmakers Alex Appel and Jonathan Lisecki. The film is an adaptation of Jane Austen's 1817 novel "Persuasion", updated as a story about Modern Persuasion. A happily single woman focused on her career in New York is forced to deal with the aftermath of feelings about a failed relationship when "the one that got away" hires her company. The film stars Alicia Witt as Wren Cosgrove, with Bebe Neuwirth, Daniella Pineda, Liza Lapira, Mark Moses, Li Jun Li, Dominic Rains, and Shane McRae. This looks super cliche and extra schmaltzy, but it might be a fun watch with this rather spunky cast. Take a look. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Appel & Lisecki's Modern Persuasion,...

The show, which comes from Paramount Television Studios and Anonymous Content, launches first on Spectrum, before running on the Paramount Network later this year as part of a deal between Viacom and Charter.
Paradise Lost sees Hartnett plays a man who moves back to Mississippi with his Palo Alto psychiatrist partner, played by Jane The Virgin’s Bridget Regan. The show, which was formerly known as Heaven of Hell, is a mystery drama set in the south that follows Hartnett and Regan’s characters as they move from California to a small town in Mississippi where they uncover a mystery that needs solving, in a slightly unusual fashion.

The actor, who also starred in Showtime’s Penny Dreadful, told Deadline that he was late to the small-screen game but is now a full convert to a world that allows for complex characters.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen Josh Hartnett in anything, but he has cropped back up and has been cast in the new series for Spectrum Originals and Paramount Network entitled Paradise Lost.
He joins the already cast Bridget Regan (Jane the Virgin) in the drama, as well as Barbara Hershey (Beaches), Nick Nolte (Warrior), Gail Bean (Unexpected), Danielle Deadwyler (Reckoning), and Shane McRae (Sneaky Pete). Variety reports the following synopsis for the series:
“a Southern Gothic mystery about a psychiatrist who moves with her family from California to her husband’s hometown in Mississippi, only to uncover shameful secrets that irrevocably change the lives of everyone involved.”
This sounds intriguing, and I’m ready to hear more. Let us know if this is sounds interesting to you. Are you a fan of Josh Hartnett?...
