Imax has named Jonathan Fischer as chief content officer, to oversee the entertainment technology company’s content strategy around Hollywood tentpoles, international movie titles and other diversified content.
Fischer, most recently vp of content strategy & analysis, global films for Netflix, will be based in Playa Vista and report to Imax CEO Rich Gelfond. His appointment comes on the heels of Imax tapping Anne Globe as its new chief marketing officer to oversee all brand, film marketing, creative and social media for the company.
As Imax recovers from the pandemic-era disruption to the wider exhibition industry, the company has looked to diversify its core slate of Hollywood blockbuster movies with local-language titles from China, India, Japan and other fast-growing markets as well as concerts and comedy and sports events that play well in its giant theaters.

“Queen Rock Montreal” will make its global streaming premiere May 15 on Disney+ as the first concert film available with Imax Enhanced sound by DTS.
When it arrived in theaters in January, the remastered 1981 concert was Imax’s biggest exclusive engagement. Now, it will debut on Disney+ alongside 18 Marvel films that will also be offered with Imax Enhanced sound on supported devices, Imax’s senior VP and head of Imax post and image capture Bruce Markoe announced during a panel Sunday at the Nab Show in Las Vegas.
The original concerts, featuring Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon, took place over two consecutive nights in November 1981, and were arranged specifically to be filmed for a full-length concert film to document their live show. The performance includes classics such as “Another One Bites the Dust,” “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Somebody to Love.” It was restored for Imax by Mercury Studios.

IMAX has revealed more fascinating details on the upcoming 2nd generation of its new fleet of 65mm film cameras. The new cameras will be made from the same materials that belong to Formula One and fighter jets. That means, alloys of carbon fiber and Titanium, honeycomb sandwich panels, wireless connectivity, new optics, a five-inch full-color display, and more. The goal is to make those beasts more user-friendly.

During a resurgence in concert films, Imax is releasing a dynamic, digitally remastered version of a classic Queen performance featuring Freddie Mercury, Brain May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon, which will have a limited run Jan. 18-21 in select Imax locations.
Queen Rock Montreal, directed by Saul Swimmer for Mercury Studios, originates from filming two consecutive performances in Montreal during 1981. To create the imagery, the original 35mm negative was rescanned at 4K and restored for the release at OnSight, a London-based postproduction company, and Imax.
The songs were remixed from a 2007 5.1 version of the concert, and are now presented in Imax’s 12.0 sound format. The sound restoration was completed at London’s Halo, where the team worked with Kris Fredriksson and Justin Shirley-Smith from Queen Productions. Brian May and Roger Taylor reviewed and approved the work at the BFI Imax theater in London. Said Imax’s senior vp postproduction Bruce Markoe,...

After just 10 days in theaters, the domestic box office total for Christopher Nolan's biographical thriller "Oppenheimer" has surpassed that of "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One," which has been out for 19 days. This weekend saw the latest entry in the long-running Tom Cruise-led action series lose 1,130 screens as theaters packed their schedules with showings of "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer". And Sunday brought more bad news for "Mission: Impossible" when it comes to the screens that matter the most.
As previously reported, Universal Pictures secured a three-week exclusive run for "Oppenheimer" on IMAX screens. Nolan's film was shot entirely on large format film stock with IMAX cameras, and the director is a vocal champion of the format, so it was a natural partnership. But it also meant that "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One" would be kicked off IMAX screens entirely after just one week.

When director Jordan Peele was in discussions about his box office hit “Nope,” he knew one thing: He wanted the film to be a vast spectacle. His first step was calling on cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema to work with him on what he calls “my most ambitious film to date. I knew Hoyte was the man.”
The UFO drama/thriller stars Daniel Kaluuya as a horse wrangler, who along with his sister Keke Palmer, starts having UFO sightings. Along with Brandon Perra as Angel, the trio attempt to capture the object on film.
Hoytema was asked to think about how he would capture a UFO, and what cameras he would choose. Hoytema, a frequent collaborator with Christopher Nolan, says, “I thought Imax was the best medium to do it on.”
Hoytema says from the start, Peele was committed to the big screen and how best audiences experience the world he created on the big screen.

Coming off one of its most contentious years in history, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences has sent out its list of candidates for its Board of Governors elections late this month.
The Board of Governors directs the Academy’s strategic vision, preserves the organization’s financial health, and assures the fulfillment of its mission.
Governors attend 6-8 board meetings annually (in person or by video conference when out of town). Each Governor also serves on one board oversight committee and their branch’s executive committee, and they are expected to represent their branch at numerous Academy events through the year.
Governors have fiduciary responsibilities imposed by state law to serve the Academy’s best interests, by acting with responsibility and care when approving annual goals presented by management, as well as major policies concerning governance.
CEO Dawn Hudson oversees a staff of more than 300 who conduct the Academy’s day-to-day business.

“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” received rave reviews and raked in nearly $100 million domestically last weekend, but without the spectacular soundscape created in post-production, Marvel Studio's Svp of feature post production Bruce Markoe thinks it would have been “horrible.” Markoe joined Skywalker Sound designer and editor Shannon J. Mills and supervising sound editor Dan Laurie for a Q & A session with TheWrap following their panel, “In Heroes, We Trust,” at the Nab Show in Las Vegas on Wednesday. It’s often said that digital production workflows are like snowflakes -- meaning that each one is different. But Bruce Markoe, senior vp of feature postproduction at Marvel Studios – whose Thor: The Dark World opens on Friday -- aims to put systems in place so that the studio doesn’t have to reinvent the wheel for each movie. “We are trying to standardize our workflow in particular for color and on set,” Markoe told The Hollywood Reporter, noting the overall goal is consistency. “Since our movies are 90 percent VFX shots, having a consistent color pipeline makes a huge difference, especially when
