Won three Emmy Awards as producer: for the TV mini-series 'Roots' (1977); its sequel 'Roots,the Next Generation' (1979) and for the made-for-TV picture 'Separate but Equal' (1991). Was voted producer of the year in 1996 by the American Film Institute.
After wartime service in the Army Air Force, he wrote articles for military publications and worked as a reporter in Salt Lake City.
