Politics and the apocalypse collide in Rumours – a horror satire that threatens to steal Megalopolis’ crown as 2024’s most eccentric movie.
When Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis came out earlier this year, opinions were somewhat divided as to whether it was a grand folly, a visionary masterpiece, a piece of demented high camp, or a mixture of all of these.
What most could agree on was that there was nothing else quite like it in 2024’s line-up of movies, whether it was in its unnatural dialogue and bizarre character names (Aubrey Plaza as financial TV reporter Wow Platinum) or its incredibly uneven visuals, which veered from the captivatingly imaginative to the embarrassingly kitsch.
For better or worse, Coppola had managed to finally achieve his goal of creating a vision of the USA as a late Roman empire in danger of tipping over into facism. Which, as 2024 nears its end, now...

Set at the G7 summit in Dankwarderode Castle in Germany we meet the men and women who lead the most powerful countries on the planet. One of our favorite traditions in best-of-the-year festivities is a lineup that tends to find a more interesting path than any guilds or critics groups. The wonderfully eccentric John Waters, whose tastes always includes a mix of the unexpected and underseen, hasn’t let us down with his top 10 films of 2024.
Published at Vulture, where one should click over to read thoughts on each, his top 10 is led by Rose Glass’ neo-noir Love Lies Bleeding. Other selections include Luca Guadagnino’s Queer, Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, Mike Leigh’s Hard Truths, Joker: Folie à Deux (“a love story I can relate to”), and Trương Minh Quý’s Viet and Nam, which will arrive next year. Waters also notes the latest from Pedro Almodóvar, Sean Baker, and Guy Maddin nearly made the cut.

What could be stranger than the hollow pomp of neoliberal politics in the face of Armageddon? While crafting this cheerfully bonkers satire, Canadian co-directors Guy Maddin and Evan and Galen Johnson became fascinated by real footage of G7 leaders coming across a puddle and awkwardly negotiating walking around it. This miniature farce didn’t exactly offer much hope for the future of humanity.
Hosted by German Chancellor Hilda Ortmann (Cate Blanchett in a coral power suit channelling Angela Merkel), world leaders representing Canada, France, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US gather for a summit on a palatial estate. They’re here for a terribly serious purpose, of course. But drafting a statement in response to an unspecified catastrophe has to wait until after the hand-shaking and toasting.

There is little to connect the desert planet of Arrakis in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune with the snow-covered streets and empty parking lots of Winnipeg, Manitoba as depicted in Matthew Rankin’s surreal comedy Universal Language. Except, of course, that both directors are Canadian — Villeneuve from Quebec, Rankin from Winnipeg — and that both find themselves in this season’s Oscar race.
Villeneuve’s Dune: Part 2 is looking to repeat the awards success of the first feature in the franchise, which was nominated for 10 Oscars, and won six. Rankin, as the saying goes, would be honored just to be nominated. His new film is Canada’s official submission for best international feature, a section Villeneuve knows a thing or two about, having scored his first Oscar nom in the category back in 2011 for his French-language break-out Incendies.

Peacock announced this morning that its psychological horror thriller Speak No Evil, starring James McAvoy, will begin streaming exclusively on the platform on December 6.
The film drew quite positive reviews in its September release — no easy feat for an English-language remake of a recent, highly lauded international title — and grossed over $76 million worldwide. Hailing from Blumhouse and Universal Pictures, it adapts Christian Tafdrup’s Danish pic of the same name, released in 2022.
The story follows Americans Ben (Scoot McNairy) and Louise (Mackenzie Davis), who after befriending a British couple with a mute son, accept an unusual invitation to bring their daughter for a weekend at an idyllic country estate. Yet when they discover their hosts are hiding sinister motives, Ben and Louise fear their family may be pawns in a disturbing plot. Led by McAvoy as a charismatic man masking unspeakable darkness, a dream holiday warps into an unnerving nightmare.

Guy Maddin’s “Rumours” (2024), co-directed by Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson, is a satire so absurd and farcical that it almost deliberately tries to pivot away from making too deep a point, choosing instead to delve into the silliness of the entire endeavor and highlight the stupidity of the administrators responsible for running the world. And that’s before Maddin brings in his signature nonsensical elements into the film, the big brain on a patch of field becoming a curious signature for a director comfortable in unconventional narratives.
Rumours (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis: What does the opening text box signify?

Calling Guy Maddin’s 2024 film, Rumours, a convoluted and absurd satire would be an understatement, considering that the very appeal of the work is based on lowbrow comedy delivered through extremely unreal circumstances. The plot of this unique film follows the leaders of the G7 countries meeting at a convention of the forum to discuss some international crisis when they get lost in the woods and are haunted by mummified bodies from centuries ago. Rumours is surely not to everyone’s taste, but there is just enough entertainment for those who enjoy absurd and spoofy satires.

It is fitting that for the 30th year of the Geneva International Film Festival, artistic director Anais Emery and her team are going back to the future.
“It was very important to recall the history of the festival but not through a retrospective,” says Emery of the event that takes place in the Swiss city from November 1-10.
”We wanted to renew, to celebrate and underline Giff’s speciality and specificity.”
That means showcasing innovative storytelling delivered via the myriad audiovisual mediums available to creators, from film, TV and web content to installations, virtual reality and extended reality (Xr) works.

Directors Evan Johnson, Galen Johnson and Guy Maddin’s dark comedy Rumours portrays the situation of the inner workings of Western leadership in a time of crisis as a farcical satire, as comfortable played out on screen as perhaps on stage. As consistently sharp and witty as the dialogue is from its hapless leaders procrastinating over a joint statement of collective action in the middle of a German forest, it also is sobering, thought-provoking and timely in current unsettled times globally. The latter forever plays on the mind, even when presented with surreal moments that include the discovery of a giant live brain parked in the undergrowth.

The great actress Isabella Rossellini was the face of Lancôme beauty for more than a decade beginning in the early 1980s, but strangely, if you look back, rarely is she the lead in any of her iconic films.
Sometimes a shadow, sometimes on the periphery, a Rossellini character is nonetheless always knowing, from tragic lounge singer Dorothy Vallens in her then-partner David Lynch’s “Blue Velvet” to ethereal beauty whisperer Lisle Von Rhuman in Robert Zemeckis’ “Death Becomes Her” and a wealthy Italian widow who dates below her station in David O. Russell’s “Joy.”
In Edward Berger’s papal potboiler “Conclave,” Rossellini has fewer lines than ever — and probably they could fit on one page — as Sister Agnes. Here is a glowering nun who has seen some shit. In Rumours, a genre-defying work set at an imagined G7 summit, the United States president might seem as sleepy as the media caricature of Joe Biden. Yet Charles Dance’s incarnation of a figure embodying such stately authority also inexplicably speaks with a British accent. This slippery distinction between reality and surrealism provides a sure sign that the film came from the mind of iconoclastic director Guy Maddin, who co-directed and wrote the project with his former students, Evan and Galen Johnson.
At every step of the way, Rumours thwarts and confounds expectations that this convening of fictional world leaders at a gazebo in the German forest will ever shift into standard political satire. Diplomacy quickly fades from being subject to serving as a mere backdrop to absurdist horror-comedy. As the seven leaders retreat into the forest under the guidance of their host, German Chancellor Hilda Orlmann (Cate Blanchett), their...

Canadian director Guy Maddin embraces absurdity. Along with his co-writers and directors Evan and Galen Johnson, Maddin has added to his surrealist oeuvre with Rumours, a comedy satirizing the G7 Summit. Bringing together a lauded cast led by Cate Blanchett playing the Chancellor of Germany, the film follows the seven world leaders as they get lost in the woods amidst a world catastrophe and simultaneously lose their minds.
As with any G7 Summit, the goal continues to be a vague “crisis” and an even vaguer “statement,” a cacophony of empty words, promises, and goals. The supporting cast are game, with Denis Ménochet shining as the President of France, and the filmmakers even choosing a very British Charles Dance to play the U.S. President. Everyone seems to be game; the subsequent film is better for it, with the interplay between these leaders providing the funniest moments. When these leaders attempt to find common ground,...

Update: Paramount Pictures and Temple Hill’s Smile 2 scored an estimated $23m bow to lead the North American box office in a weekend that saw a good hold by Terrifier 3, while Cannes Palme d’Or winner Anora scored the highest per-screen average of 2024 so far.
Smile 2 writer-director Parker Finn recorded his second number one debut for his horror franchise after the original opened top in 2022 on $22.6m, which will have pleased Paramount executives, who said on average horror sequels open 26% behind the original.

Great indie numbers this weekend as Anora turned out highest per-screen-average of 2024 at $90k on six screens for a $540k gross. We Live In Time, the best platform expansion of the year, grossed $4.2 million on 956 screens in week 2 for a $4.5 million cume. Newcomers Union and The Line fared well on one screen each, as did Goodrich on about 1,000.
“We’re incredibly excited about this weekend’s record-breaking results and the fantastic critical and audience response to Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or-winning film Anora. Baker is a singular director who truly understands the power of the theatrical experience and how important it is for films to be seen in the theater,” Neon said. “With Mikey Madison in her unparalleled performance as Anora, and the film’s strong awards potential, there’s no doubt it will continue to captivate a broad audience as we move into the fall.”

Neon opens Anora, its fifth consecutive Cannes Palm d’Or winner, in limited release this weekend — the highest-profile awards contender to hit theaters this awards season in a lively specialty weekend.
Sean Baker’s comedy debuts on six screens in New York and LA. The three NYC locations will be playing select screenings in the film’s original 35mm. Presales have been solid, and Neon will add San Francisco, Chicago, Boston and Toronto next week, expanding thereafter to wide release by mid-to-late November.
Anora, its ensemble cast of Mikey Madison, Mark Eydelshteyn, Yuriy Borisov, Karren Karagulian and Vache Tovmasyan in a comic variation of a modern Cinderella story, play well with audiences. Critics have swooned over the film with a 98% Rotten Tomatoes score (see Deadline review), a similar trajectory to Neon’s 2019 Palme d’Or winner Parasite.

Rumours checks a lot of boxes for me. It’s a weird, irreverent satire featuring the undead and a giant, unexplained brain in the middle of the forest. Add in Cate Blanchett and Charles Dance (Game of Thrones) playing dimwitted politicians and the case for it gets even stronger. Despite all of this, the movie, directed by the trio of Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson, felt flat. The sluggish pace and extremely dry sense of humor and delivery will likely make this a challenging watch for most casual viewers.

Brian Cox’s feature directorial debut “Glenrothan” — billed as his “love letter to Scotland” — has wrapped production, with a first look revealed showing the “Succession” star alongside Alan Cumming in a room full of whisky barrels.
Alongside revealing a first look from the feature, Protagonist Pictures has come aboard for worldwide sales and is set to screen exclusive footage for buyers at the upcoming American Film Market.
Lionsgate, which co-developed the project with London based studio Nevision, has taken U.K. rights on the family drama, which shot in Scotland.
In “Glenrothan,” Donal (Cumming) reluctantly returns to the Scottish Highlands after 35 years in Chicago to make amends with his estranged older brother, Sandy (Cox). Sandy needs Donal to take over the family’s whisky distillery or he will be forced to sell and give up on the family’s legacy. But their reunion forces the brothers to confront the past...

I love Rumours, it’s a hodgepodge of mystery, thriller, horror, and soap opera and it works! Splendidly I might add. Largely because of the cast, but also the script and direction by Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson. It’s best for you to enter the theater with no knowledge of what the film is

Rumours.Rumours (2024), codirected by Guy Maddin and brothers Evan and Galen Johnson, follows the world leaders at a G7 summit as they draft a provisional statement concerning an unspecified global crisis. The film finds Maddin operating in a different vein of artifice than the chaotic pastiches of early filmic techniques that characterize much of his previous work. In Rumours, high-key lighting blasts an antiseptic aura, and the babbly performances are urbane to the point of uncanniness (Charles Dance plays the US president with an unexplained British accent). However, the heads of state soon wander into more familiar Maddin territory. Stumbling through the woods, they encounter surreal and fleshy aberrations: self-pleasuring bog mummies, a gargantuan brain, et cetera. In a classic The Exterminating Angel (1962) conundrum, the figureheads drift through an inescapable liminal space, forced to abandon their mannered etiquettes and self-interrogate. Picture Raúl Ruiz’s The Territory (1981), if transposed into the sphere of international politics.

Guy Maddin didn’t know he was even on Cate Blanchett‘s radar until he saw her pick his film “My Winnipeg” out of the Criterion Closet back in 2022.
“It was a manipulative move. It was a cry for help!” Blanchett joked to IndieWire (and her peers) on the rooftop of the Jw Marriott on the Cannes Croisette back in May when their debut collaboration, “Rumours,” first premiered. She was joined on that day by Maddin and his co-directors, Evan and Galen Johnson, who’ve been chugging away with the singularly absurdist Canadian auteur on short films since 2015 and the feature “The Forbidden Room” in 2016. Their latest, “Rumours,” is a satirical slice of weirdness about seven nimwit world leaders who gather at a fictional G7 conference to draft a vaguely reassuring statement about an unnamed international crisis. Blanchett plays Hilda Orlmann, the Chancellor of Germany, channeling Angela Merkel in a blond bob and European faux-steeliness.

A collaboration between writers and directors Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson, the genre-bending dark comedy Rumours screened out of competition at the 77th Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, and now a wider audience will have the chance to watch the movie when it reaches theatres this Friday, October 18th. In anticipation of the film’s release, we were able to sit down for an interview with its star, two-time Oscar winner (and many-time Oscar nominee) Cate Blanchett, as well as the directors and Blanchett’s co-stars Denis Ménochet, Roy Dupuis, Nikki Amuka-Bird, and Rolando Ravello. One hit horror sequel deserves another, and Art the Clown won’t be the only one smiling this weekend. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Despite the huge success of Damien Leone‘s “Terrifier 3,” Art the Clown will have to deal with the fact there is likely to be an even bigger horror sequel this weekend as Paramount Pictures releases “Smile 2.” It’s the follow-up to the 2022 hit horror movie from filmmaker Parker Finn, which opened with $22.6 million on its way to $105.9 million domestic and $217 million worldwide. It should go without saying that October is the perfect month for a horror release, but oddly, the original “Smile” opened on September 30, then had sustained legs with smaller week-to-week drops. Other horror franchises that have dominated the month of October include the “Saw” and “Paranormal Activity” movies, both which saw huge bumps in business with their second chapters.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die (Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah)
Bad Boys: Ride or Die is a film about retribution and redemption. Not just on screen, but in execution. After their last attempt at a blockbuster was shelved in the name of a tax loophole, directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah seem intent on unleashing all their pent-up energy, whether they’re selling us Batgirls or Bad Boys. Even if it bears the baggage of a meta redemption arc for its star, Ride or Die brings enough stylistic gusto to its action in the absence of Michael Bay but has a hard time justifying most other decisions, which adopt the tedium rampant in modern blockbuster filmmaking. – Conor O. Rumours is probably Guy Maddin's most accessible film, flirting with the mainstream in ways most of his work never did. That's relative, however, and one shouldn't presume the Winnipeg-based auteur has defanged himself in some desperate attempt to score the public's approval. This G7 pitch-black comedy is still weirder than your favorite Hollywood directors' wildest swing, keeping true to Maddin's cinema of transgression. The first big laugh in Rumours hits before the opening credits have even finished rolling: “The producers would like to thank the G7 leaders for their support and consultation during the making of this movie.” As political bloggers, chronic doomscrollers and any conspiracy theorist with access to the internet will tell you, the “Group of Seven” is an annual summit in which selected world-power presidents and prime ministers discuss global issues and cross-governmental solutions. Rumours Trailer: Cate Blanchett Faces Bog Corpses, Giant Brains And The Apocalypse In Wild G7 Satire
Given the current political state of the world, a movie about the G7 probably doesn't sound like your next must-see addition to the ever-growing watchlist. But how about a G7 movie that sees the likes of Cate Blanchett, Charles Dance, Alicia Vikander, and Roy Dupuis — all adopting bizarre accents — playing inept world leaders whose cosy little Summit gets upended by the discovery of a mummified corpse, some funny business with a giant brain, and more ill-advised, high-powered rumpy-pumpy than you can shake an episode of early season Game Of Thrones at? Because that's exactly what it looks like we're in for with Rumours, a genre-hopping new satire from The Green Fog filmmakers Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson, and producer Ari Aster. Check out the bonkers new trailer below:

In the opening scene of the Rumours red band trailer, an archeologist unearths an Iron Age corpse, mummified with its severed penis hanging from its neck. As the summit host and German representative Hilda Orlmann, played by Cate Blanchett, describes the bog body, the G7 leaders in attendance can’t help but wince and give distasteful stares, with one global leader calling it “gruesome.” Following the ceremony, representatives of the world’s wealthiest democracies are stranded in the woods and chased by ancient bodies in a conference gone horribly wrong.
