International buyers are swooning over The Glory of Life, a very un-Kafkaesque love story about Franz Kafka and his last romance.
The German-language drama, from directors Judith Kaufmann and Georg Maas, follows the romance between Franz Kafka (Sabin Tambrea) and Dora Diamant (Henriette Confurius) in the final year of the famed writer’s life, before his death from tuberculosis at age 40.
Unlike most adaptations of Kafka’s work — from Orson Welles’ The Trial (1962) to Steven Soderbergh’s Kafka (1991) to The Castle (1997) from Michael Haneke — angst and existential dread are mostly absent from The Glory of Life. Based on the best-selling novel by Michael Kumpfmüller, the film focuses instead on what the directors’ claim was the happiest period in Kafka’s life.
Menemsha Films has picked up North American rights to The Glory of Life, with Condor taking France, Wanted Cinema acquiring the movie in Italy, Divisa Red in Spain and...

The last love of Franz Kafka, the celebrated Czech author of “Metamorphosis,” will be portrayed in romantic drama “The Glory of Life.” TrustNordisk has boarded international sales ahead of Cannes, while Majestic is handling the domestic rights.
Currently shooting, “The Glory of Life” is directed by Georg Maas (“Two Lives”) and is inspired by the love story between Kafka and Dora Diamant.
The period drama was penned by Michael Gutmann and Maas. Producers are Helge Sasse and Solveig Fina for Tempest Film and Tommy Pridnig for Lotus Film.
Kafka and Diamant met in 1923 on the Baltic Sea coast, a year before the author died from tuberculosis. The worldly wise Diamant, who was working in a Jewish community, took him to Berlin, and as Kafka’s health deteriorates rapidly, they traveled together to a sanatorium in Austria. The memory of their time together will shape Diamant for the rest of her life.

The black-and-white epic, set in a fictitious village in Germany’s Hunsrück region in the mid-19th century, also received awards for Best Director and Best Screenplay (shared with co-author Gert Heidenreich) after being nominated by the members of the German Film Academy in a total of six categories.
The co-production with Margaret Ménégoz’s Les Films du Losange is handled internationally by Arri Media Worldsales and was released theatrically in Germany by Concorde Filmverleih.

Seven decades later, the creative well has somehow not yet run dry on the ripple effects of Nazi Germany's offenses, though writer-director Georg Maas's slick and sulky second feature is not another dime-a-dozen Holocaust tragedy.
Loosely based on both historical fact and Hannelore Hippe's novel Eiszeiten, this domestic psychological drama concerns the tense, long-dormant plight of Katrine (Juliane Köhler), a middle-age Norwegian grandmother whose family is asked to testify against the state on behalf of war orphans.
Katrine, it's revealed early on, is a product of Lebensborn breeding and repatriation, the daughter of an occupying German soldier and Norwegian screen legend Liv Ullmann, whose rare appearance seems especially fitting for a project that plays l...

Efm: Brisk business for Beta Cinema; Pandastorm buys five.
Beta Cinema’s two Competition titles – Dietrich Brüggemann’s Stations Of The Cross and Edward Berger’s Jack – were the Munich-based sales company’s top-selling titles at this year’s European Film Market (Efm).
Stations Of The Cross has been sold to France (Memento), Italy (Satine Film), Spain (Caramel), Poland (Aurora), Benelux (Wild Bunch), Portugal (Vendetta Films), Greece (7 Films), Scandinavia and the Baltic States (Nonstop), Ex-Yugoslavia (Discovery) and Hungary (Circo).
As reported by ScreenDaily yesterday, the UK (Arrow) has also taken the drama, which had been the top-rated film of the Screen jury before Richard Linklater’s Boyhood was screened.
Further interest has been shown from the Us and Australia for the Ufa Fiction production, which received the Silver Bear for Best Script and the Ecumenical Jury’s prize for the best film in the Competition..

Oscar 2014 predictions (photo: Amy Adams and Christian Bale in ‘American Hustle’) Below are our last-minute Oscar 2014 predictions. The 86th Academy Award nominations are going to be announced on Thursday, January 16, at 5:30 a.m. Pacific Time in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. We will be posting the list of Oscar 2014 nominations here. As mentioned elsewhere on this site, the Oscar nominations always offer some kind of surprise that will leave some elated and others mighty pissed off. Last year, for example, left out of the Best Director roster were favorites Kathryn Bigelow for Zero Dark Thirty and Ben Affleck for Argo. The latter film, predictably, went on to take home the Best Picture Academy Award. Also, a few years ago, Christopher Nolan was bypassed for Inception, while a couple of years before that, Nolan and his film, The Dark Knight, were bypassed for Best Picture,...

As this year's Academy Awards nominations approach, and after the shocking selection of films conforming the Academy's shortlist for the Best Foreign Language Film Award, audiences will get the opportunity to see some of the films that were dismissed but which are absolutely deserving of attention. Rather than including all of the 76 Submissions the Palm Spring Film Festival decided to shorten their program to 45 of what they considered the best representation of the extensive amount of films.
Included in the program are all of the 9 shortlisted films, all the other major omissions, and many more obscure titles that showcase some of the most interesting voices in World Cinema today. Most of these films have been awarded prizes and received praise at major festivals from Sundance to Cannes and Toronto, and will give the viewer a broader view of the category beyond the assumed frontrunners.
Below is a list with more information on each of the films that will be screening at Palm Springs with reviews and interviews with the filmmakers for the majority of them. Read more about the complete list of 76 Foreign Language Oscar Submissions visit Here

That loud sound you heard earlier today was everyone gasping at the newly released Foreign Language shortlist for the Oscars. On the shortlist were nine films, a solid mix of films, but what’s got people talking more are the films you don’t see on the list.

I understand the use of the word "overlooks" in the headline is a little misleading. After all, I haven't seen all 76 Foreign Language films that were submitted for Best Foreign Language Oscar this year. So to say The Past was the film that absolutely deserved to be among the shortlisted nine is a little arrogant on my part. After all, I haven't yet watched my screener of Belgium's The Broken Circle Breakdown, which was shortlisted, but I have heard it is quite good. I have, however, seen The Hunt (which I loved) and The Great Beauty (which I respect). I think it's interesting to see Wong Kar-wai's The Grandmaster on the list as I'm not sure if this is the full international cut or the domestic version released by The Weinstein Co. The film certainly had its fans, but a spot on the shortlist isn't necessarily something I was expecting.

Nine movies advanced to the next round of Oscar voting for Best Foreign Language Film, but The Past was not one of them. Iranian director Asghar Farhadi had won the category for his previous film, A Separation, and his latest was considered a favorite to be recognized again.
Also missing from the list was festival favorite Blue Is the Warmest Color, although that buzzy movie had failed to make the cut-off date for eligibility and was not included for consideration.
But enough about who’s not going to win the Oscar. The Hunt, starring Mads Mikkelson (above) made the cut.

Top brass at the 25th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (Psiff) have announced a new programme on Canadian Cinema as well as the traditionally strong roster of foreign-language films eligible for the Fipresci Award in the Awards Buzz section, and Modern Masters.
The festival will screen 45 of the 76 official foreign-language Oscar submissions under the umbrella of Awards Buzz.
“We’ve selected Canadian films for a special focus at this year’s festival for many reasons, not the least of which is the wealth of talent emerging from its relatively small, indigenous film industry, and the depth and richness of story and character portrayal its films exemplify,” said festival director Darryl Macdonald.
“Whether it’s established auteurs like Denis Coté, Denis Villenueve and Atom Egoyan, gifted actor-directors like Don McKellar and Sarah Polley or newly emerging talents like Chloé Robichaud, Craig Goodwill and Sébastien Pilote, Canadian creative ingenuity is on abundant display in its films. All of this...

Golden Globes 2014 predictions (image: Jennifer Lawrence, Jeremy Renner, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale in ‘American Hustle’ movie poster) They may be ridiculed, derided, and dismissed, but the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Golden Globes ceremony remains the second most important awards-season event — in terms of international public awareness — trailing only the Academy Awards. The nominations for the 2014 Golden Globes ("2013 Golden Globes," if you want to be technical about it) will be announced by Zoe Saldana, Olivia Wilde, and Aziz Ansari (very, very early) on Thursday morning, December 12, 2013. Who will be the nominees? Which movies and performances will Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences members want to check out after they hear the names and/or titles of this year’s nominees? Well, below are our 2014 Golden Globes predictions. Like the Academy Awards, Hollywood guilds, and most critics’ groups, quality is an important element in the HFPA members’ selections; but then again,...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced its shortlist for the 2014 Foreign Language Film Oscar — totaling a not-so-short 76 submitted films.
The number, up from 71 films last year, sets a new record for the category and includes frontrunners such as Asghar Farhadi’s The Past from Iran, Thomas Vinterberg’s The Hunt from Denmark, and Wong Kar-Wai’s The Grandmaster from Hong Kong. Abdellatif Kechiche’s festival favorite lesbian drama Blue Is the Warmest Color from France, however, failed to make the cut-off date for eligibility, while India controversially submitted Gyan Correa’s The Good Road over Ritesh Batra’s The Lunchbox.

The Academy officially announced today that a record 76 countries have submitted films for consideration in the Foreign Language Film category for the 2014 Oscars. Among those submitting, Moldova and Saudi Arabia are first-time entrants and this is the first time Montenegro has submitted a film as an independent country. Based solely on name recognition alone I'd say Thomas Vinterberg's The Hunt (Denmark) and Asghar Farhadi's The Past (Iran) will be looked at as front-runners. However, I haven't only seen a few of the titles on this list, another of which is Mexico's entry, Heli from Amat Escalante. I have heard good things about Borgman (Netherlands) and it will be interesting to see how Haifaa al-Mansour's Wadjda is treated as it is a story unto itself, not to mention it seems to be receiving high marks from those that have seen it. I'm personally hoping to catch it soon...

In line with SydneysBuzz’s focus on the international film business we have put together the most complete list on the 67 national submissions to compete for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. This list showcases films that have been the centerpieces of the most renowned festivals and that represent the best in the cinematic landscape from across the globe. Last year, at this point in the race the clear favorite was Palm d'Or winner Amour, which went on to win the award with no significant competition and scoring 4 other nominations including Best Picture, an outstanding feat for a foreign film about love at the end of life, by Michael Haneke.
This time around the story could have repeated almost identically with the most recent winner of Cannes’ biggest prize Blue is the Warmest Color. However, the film became one more victim of the Academy's rules, which rendered it unqualified to compete because of the late release date in France. With Blue out of the race the award is fair game for virtually anyone on the list, although there are certainly some favorites.
Saudi Arabia's first ever submission, the charming Wadjda might turn into beginners luck and score the Kingdom, in which movie theaters are banned, a nomination or even a win. Iran's audacious decision to submit the French-language The Past caused uproar among conservatives, but might certainly score the nation another nomination after their win in 2012 with the masterful A Separation. Other strong contenders are Denmark's The Hunt starring Mads Mikkelsen, and which would continue the countries streak of 3 consecutive nominations winning in 2011 with In A Better World, as well as Canada's Gabrielle about the romantic relationship of a handicapped couple, and Hong Kong’s The Grandmaster by famous director Wong Kar-wai.
Italy’s The Great Beauty, Australia’s The Rocket, Romania’s Child’s Pose, and Chile’s Gloria are among other titles that might score a nomination given their success and prominence during their festivals rounds. Some countries decided to take a chance and send audacious choices as their representation to the Academy, so is the case Mexico, a country that chose the more violent and artistically daring Cannes winner Heli, over the hit comedy Instructions Not Included, or Greece’s Boy Eating The Bird’s Food, which includes grotesque imagery that might not sit well with academy members.
The African continent is minimally represented with only 3 entries, South Africa’s Four Corners, and the Arabic-language works God’s Horses from Morocco, and Winter of Discontent from Egypt. Algeria, which has submitted regularly and even scored several nominations, is absent in this occasion. Another big omission is China who did not submit an entry but whose language is represented by Taiwan and the above-mentioned Hong Kong; equally strange is France’s decision to enter Renoir over tons of other films that could have substituted Abdellatif Kechiche.
Less surprising is Russia’s decision to submit a blockbuster-style production with a very nationalistic message in lieu of a more intimate film. On the other hand, Cambodia, Lithuania, and Switzerland decided to go with a documentary, a choice that has never been very fruitful in this category. Lastly, Israel and Palestine both entered strong candidate with Bethlehem and Omar respectively, adding with that to the great year the region has seen in the cinematic realm.
The rest of the films are a mixture of obscure titles with not much exposure outside their homelands, and a others with great premise but equally unknown quality. Thankfully for SydneysBuzz readers, the list below compiles all 67 Foreign Submissions and includes links to more information and a link to the trailer of every single one of them. For the most part the clips are subtitled; the ones that are not will at least give the reader a sense of what the film is about. As the Awards Season develops, we will have updates on predicted nominees and other developments in the race for the Best Foreign Language Film.

Trailer...

A Norwegian family unravels when a complex piece of German history surfaces in their midst in Two Lives (Zwei Leben), writer-director Georg Maas' well-acted and rather solemn drama that’s loosely based on the novel by Hannelore Hippe. This year’s foreign-language Oscar submission from Germany casts Norwegian legend Liv Ullmann and German star Juliane Koehler (from 2002 foreign-language Oscar winner Nowhere in Africa) as a mother and daughter in Norway whose relationship and extended family are shaken to the core by revelations brought about by the fall of the Berlin Wall. Though indirectly a film that deals

Georg Maas’ Two Lives (Zwei Leben) has been selected as Germany’s entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category of the 86th Academy Awards.
The independent nine-person jury under the direction of film-maker Dagmar Hirtz selected the German-Norwegian co-production over eight other titles such as Jan Ole Gerster’s multi-award-winning debut Oh Boy, Jeanine Meerapfel’s My German Friend and the animation film Knight Rusty.
Based on the true story of the German Kathrine Evensen (played by Juliane Köhler who learnt Norwegian for the part), Two Lives addresses a chapter of recent German history which is unfamiliar to many: the fate of the Norwegian “Lebensborn Children,” a legacy of the Third Reich.
Evensen leads a happy life with her family and mother (played by Liv Ullmann) in Norway. However, with the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, she is suddenly confronted with her secret Stasi past. Her false identity threatens her entire existence, but, to prevent...

All too often, “based on a true story” is just a cop out for a lame narrative (“Don’t blame us it’s true!”). Sometimes, though, it’s a way of couching the incredible in a way that prepares the audience for a plotline that's too far out to be fiction. Which is a testament to Maas, because the story is byzantine: During the Nazi occupation of Norway, women who consorted with German soldiers were ostracized, and their children taken away. Raised in East Germany, Katrine (Juliane Kohler) has made a new life for herself in Norway with her husband, daughter and the family matriarch,...
