After a challenging 2012, the lines have been drawn and the troops are in position for the 2013 radio year. Colin Delaney looks across the country at the old and new faces and the biggest fights on the cards in the battle for the ratings win.
2012 was a tumultuous year for Australia’s radio industry. Marred by several well-publicised incidents, the reputations and standing of talent, management and key brands in the space took a beating, as did the image of the medium as a whole.
But the stage is now set for the battle of 2013 after the ratings season begins on January 20 and those in the industry Encore spoke to are hopeful the coming 12 months will see a turnaround with a number of new additions to the talent lineup and the return of many industry veterans. Um CEO Mat Baxter believes one show in particular will be a major game changer...

Stynes and Lukis start on Tuesday
Sydney’s Mix 106.5 will finally put its new breakfast duo of Sami Lukis and Yumi Stynes on air this Tuesday – nine days after the first official radio ratings period of 2013 began.
The duo – Sydney’s first all-female FM breakfast team – were named for the slot by station by owner Australian Radio Network at the end of last year. The move came after the previous lineup split with Claire Hooper leving the station and Tim Ross moving to national drivetime.
Mumbrella understand that the pair, who have not previously worked together, have been in off air rehearsals as they work to build up chemistry.
The show will target a 25-44-year-old female demographic.
Stynes said in this afternoon’s announcement: “We’re very different people with our own take on life but we feel like we’ve been friends for years”.
Lukis added: “I think...

Lukis and Stynes
Arn is to tear up its key programming lineup on Sydney station Mix 106.5.
The wholesale changes include a brand new breakfast show for Sydney and drivetime show for Sydney and Melbourne.
The new hosts of the Sydney breakfast show will be Sami Lukis – who moves from drivetime where she co-hosted a show with the departing Ant Simpson – and Yumi Stynes who was dropped from the 3Pm Pickup in August. Arn says this will be Sydney’s first all-female breakfast team.
The breakfast slot had previously been inhabited by Tim ‘Rosso’ Ross and Claire Hooper. As Mumbrella reported last month, Hooper is also leaving the network. Some commentators had suggested there was little natural chemistry between Rosso and Hooper.
Today’s announcement stressed the rapport between its new breakfast duo.
The network said: “This show will create a real point of difference for Mix106.5 next year with Sami...

Mix FM’s drivetime host Anthony Simpson, Wsfm’s Brendan Jones and Nova team of presenter Ryan Fitzgerald and producer Tom Ivey are to appear in a session at this week’s Mumbrella360 discussing how to create radio content that drives PR for shows.
Simpson co-hosts the Ant & Sami Lukis show which airs in Sydney and Melbourne from 4-7pm. Jones co-hosts Jonesy & Amanda in the Morning on Wsfm in Sydney. Ivey is producer on Nova’s Sydney’s Fitzy & Wippa breakfast show. Also in the panel is Ralph van Dijk of audio agency Eardrum.
The panel will look at creating events within shows that also generate publicity for the station.

Alternative content provider CinemaLive has partnered with Opera Australia and the Sydney Opera House to deliver selected performances to cinemas in Australia and other countries.
“The aim of Opera Australia and CinemaLive is make opera accessible to everyone, particularly across regional Australia & Nz. Whilst plans for the exact titles are currently being finalised, I can advise that two productions will appear in Australian cinemas pre-Christmas. Each production is being delivered in high definition and 5.1 sound together with fantastic backstage interview with cast members, the conductor and more. Every event will be introduced by our host, Sami Lukis,” acquisitions and marketing director Michelle Hunter told Encore.
